Q: I found this shower curtain at World Market and totally loved it for my bedroom. I have plans to turn it into two window curtains for my bedroom, but I'm having some trouble picking out a color scheme around it. I need a rug, bedding, and furniture. I don't want the room to be too busy with colors and patterns, but I've never been good at color coordinating. I'm leaning toward the tan color, but I'm open to more colorful options. Any help would be great!

Shaw's Original Fir...
this post seems to have a room using a similarly bold curtain color done very nicely: http://littlegreennotebook.blogspot.com/2012/04/room-tours-jennas-rental-bedroom-redo.html
I think this pattern gives you tons of options! You could coordinate with a stripe or smaller scale that brings in similar colors, or even another floral of a different scale for bedding or a rug. I would definitely mix it up! I think this pattern just drives home that things should 'go,' not 'match.'
The first color to pop out to me is that pretty violet. Adds some of those soft blues and you have a calm and cozy room.
Good luck..
BTW: I see a wrought Iron bed in your future :o)
Since the curtain pattern is large, I would accessorize with tight patterns (like a small stripe or check in the blue or moss green color) on the rug and throw pillows.
Try putting a throw pillow with one of those tight patterns on this bedding: http://www.potterybarn.com/products/grand-embroidered-duvet-cover-sham-white/?pkey=csolid-duvet-covers-shams
You could also try a rug like this:

I would love to see a mustard and white chevron stripe next to this pattern. I love mixing bold patterns - the trick is getting the colors exactly right or it looks messy. Personally, I wouldn't go with tan or add in any more colors. I am picturing white furniture with some blue glass jars repurposed as candle holders/vases - kind of a beach-y look.
To quiet down the scheme, match the wall color to the ground color of the fabric, or go one shade lighter on the paint swatch.
After that, the most sophisticated way to pull a scheme from a pattern is to look at the colors used LEAST in the pattern, and start from there.
But to keep the room "quiet", make sure you are doing close tone-on-tone variations of a single color... and the cooler colors is where Id' pull for a bedroom.
White furniture or pale woods would be where I would take furniture... and an upholstered headboard closely matching the ground color of the print.
But even in a tone-on-tone scheme, make sure you use the strongest color (here, the navy/royal/periwinkle) at least ONCE some other place. Were it me, I'd do a pair of blue ceramic lamps flanking the bed and call it a day.
I suppose there's no chance you live in NYC, right?? I'd LOVE to build a bedroom around that fabric!
I would take my cue from the photo of the curtain in the bathroom. 2/3ds white, 1/3 a pretty yellow and blue accents with some natural wood or wicker baskets, if you like. Theres what looks like a blue/ white/yellow print in a smaller scale under the wicker shelf unit. I think it's towels, but you could find some cushions in a smaller print - even stripes or checks or, possibly, paisley that would not be too busy but would add a layer of interest as a pillow or bedskirt.
Have to use a strong object..in that dark blue for sure...great lamp, large vase, to bring that right OUT as the grounding color...just one thing even..and like the sound of the mustard yellow chevron rug...
West Elm is a great bedding source. They have several solids and simple patterns that would coordinate well.
Like this one in white, amethyst or steel blue:

this one in navy is probably my favorite:

this one in white is nice:

or this one too:

Good luck!
Yes, definitely the white pintuck duvet the person above linked! Blue rug.
Dark blue walls, crisp white bedding, wooden furniture and mustard rug.
I second hippyvieja. Dark blue would look lovely on the walls! If you are unsure about it on all of the walls, I would do an accent wall in the dark blue and white on the others.
Rug: sisal
Bedding: white with simple, subtle dark blue pattern (perhaps a more abstracty floral)
Furniture: pale or honey-toned wood, or limewash.
It's a lovely pattern and collection of colours.
I don't know what kind of bed you have but I imagined a gold leafed, metal bed with lots of curves with bed spreads in the soft pinkish purple found in the curtain. Or you could paint a bed that purply pink color and have white bedding with a bold throw and pillows that incorporate the colors in the curtain.
Good luck!
I definitely see a brass bed in this picture. Also that soft lavender/pink would be a great color to put on the walls. Yellow lampshades on painted white vintage lamp bases popped in my head when I saw that curtain.
Even before I hit the jump and saw the second pic, I was going to say put a tan, or yellow as I call it, on the wall. See how great that wall paint looks in that second pic? If you don't want to go quite that dark, do a less vibrant shade of that color. Then, for the bed, a blue quilt, duvet cover, whatever you use. I have a lighter variation of this yellow/tan on my bedroom wall, and a blue quilt in a medium blue like on your curtain (not the darkest one, the next darkest blue in there), and it makes a great bedroom. I've got different curtains, obviously. Use the lavender as an accent sparingly - do you like the way it looks on the wall in that pic? I don't. I would also do accents in lighter or darker blue. NIce colors and patterns in that fabric. I don't like it with the white in that pic, as I knew I wouldn't. This pattern is vibrant, and needs color to stand up to it!
I want to share one interesting blog post on Freshome which will give you ideas about curtain selection and about color combination! I hope it will work for you. BTW: your color selection is not quite bad as you think. :)
I second the comment by Textiles -- I was envisioning a tiny-print butter-yellow bedspread even before I saw the yellow wall in the second pic. There are several colors in the print that you COULD pull out (and I like the idea of a navy rug), but this is not the wallpaper in Jackie Kennedy's White House. If you coordinate too closely, the casual feel will be gone and everything will feel too studied. Take your palette a little farther afield to end up with a room that looks like it just happened, like it came together on its own.
