I'm not talking desks where you get serious work done here - that would make it difficult to relax in what should be the most calming room of the home. But a small desk in the bedroom can be helpful for small tasks and leisurely letter-writing (if that's done at all anymore!). Here are some examples:
My own home has a very tiny desk in the bedroom (first image). I use it to store thank-you's, paper, pens, envelopes, a couple of books, and a few small accessories. The desktop is a perfect place to surf the net a little before hitting the sack. I could bring the computer to bed with me, but that just leads to staying online for way too long and losing sleep.
I suppose a very small space could double up and use the desk as a bedside table (image three), but I'm not sure I'd want a desk that close to my head when trying to sleep.
Do you use a desk in the bedroom? How do you put it to use?

If space allows, why not? The only reason I would vote against it is if it's a home office situation. Having the bed next to where you work is recipe for lost productivity.
We keep work and computers out of the bedroom. Part practicality (small rooms), part aesthetic - keeping the bedroom for rest and rejuvenation, and the work areas for a different energy.
Yay! My husband has an office, although we usually use our laptops at the kitchen table, but every once in a while we find outselves in bed with laptops, or I'm trying to write a letter on my lap, so a desk would be nice! Add a mirror above it, and it can double as a dressing table :)
Not everyone has the luxury of being able to have a separate desk space. So sometimes they have to go in the bedroom. There is a great example of this being done seamlessly here http://bit.ly/fSgmdO
I think it's fine if the desk is kept neat, and maybe curtained off or something. I like the idea of a very organized desk doubling as a night stand.
When I had my college apartment with a desk I usually ended up working on/in my bed, though, which wasn't very productive. There were a lot of things wrong with that apartment in terms of having way too much tech in the bedroom and it not being very relaxing.
I am one of those people that don't have the luxury of having my desk anywhere but my bedroom. My solution was to use an armoire, where I can shut the doors on my computer and separate work from living.
Only if there's no better place for it elsewhere. But to me it reminds me too much of dorm/rooomate-life, when I had to shove everything into my bedroom except for eating and TV watching.
Now I prefer to move as much as possible out of the bedroom (heck, even the closets if I could) and keep the space for sleeping.
Personally I sit at a desk at work so why would I want to sit at one at home? The only desk-type thing in my home is a dressing table in the bedroom where I primp.
I really love pic#1 and have no problem w/ the computer in the room so long as nobody is on it while I'm trying to sleep.
Nay. I'll put my tech in the oddest places just to keep it out of the bedroom. Can't sleep with all that white noise it makes even when it's off.
If and only if a room is large enough or has an irregular shape... it's fine to have a dedicated desk space for all things social or entertainment.
For work and your own sanity, keep everything "work" out of the bedroom
I have a roadside find wooden desk in my bedroom. Haven't really put it to use yet, and I'm almost certain it'll end up somewhere else when I move, but for now, it's nice having a desk next to my armchair.
I have an antique writing desk and pretty chair in the bedroom, but it isn't a home office. I'm lucky enough to have a room for that.
Nope. Not my cuppa. Our bedroom is for bedding (yes). The weird led lights mess up the mood. ;)
I would agree that on a website called APARTMENT therapy (not MANSION therapy), it's surprising to hear that "serious" desks should be elsewhere than in the bedroom, where we should be doing, at most, some "leisurely letter-writing". Our living room is also our dining room, guest room and home to my desk. My husband's desk is in the bedroom, though I suppose the bathroom is another alternative...
I say nay, if you can put the desk somewhere else. My husband and I had our desk in the bedroom in our first apartment, and though we didn't think it was a big deal, we were constantly wishing we had a bigger space. Once we moved the desk to the foyer, the apartment seemed perfect.
I have a desk and drafting table in my bedroom that serve as nightstands. I have retired the drafting table from any work appropriate to its intended use, but the desk also serves as a dressing table. I have a large, "work" desk in my living room. If you don't have any space/choice, I can see working in the bedroom, but I'm glad I've got a bit more room and don't have to.
I've had my desk in my bedroom nearly all my life, so it's something I'm used to.
Once when I lived in a huge apartment I was able to put the desk somewhere else, but all that did was make the bedroom seem cavernous and empty.
Until I can afford a house or a two-bedroom apartment, I don't see how I can live without a desk in the bedroom.
No. NO. NO.
yea.
OUr home office is right across the hall from the bedroom--so no electronics in the bedroom , except for my trusty clock radio (that lets me listen to radio when I am awake at night (insomnia).
My bedroom and where I get my work done are one in the same. It is by far not my first choice, but it is really the only area where we had space to put a small desk in. I'd rather do that than be moving things in and out of the dining room every day, but that's just my preference. Our goal for our next place is to have a dedicated office/craft area so our sleeping and working spaces are distinctly different. I'm not opposed to having a desk in a bedroom, but for the future, I probably wouldn't want to get 'serious' work done there.
I live in a sub-600 sq ft apartment and I work from home a few days a week, so yes a desk in the bedroom is basically a necessity as there isn't much space elsewhere. And it is a big desk ... not too deep, but quite long.
The keys for keeping the space warm and inviting:
- keep the desk as clean as possible, meaning uncluttered and free of dust
- eliminate or wrangle cables as much as possible. use wireless mice and keyboards
- use a decorative lamp with a soft, warm light, not a desk lamp like one might find in an office
- if you have shelves above your desk as I do, use small storage to keep nicknacks out of the way. I use white IKEA kassett boxes.
- find a comfy or cool chair instead of your typical black plastic/leather office chair.
^ oh and one more thing to add ... if you are working from home, always make your bed to make it less inviting to crawl into :)
Thank you for spelling "yea" correctly!
I have a desk in my bedroom because there's nowhere else to put it, though I'd prefer to have it somewhere else.
I do like the idea of having a non-work-related secretary desk in a corner of the bedroom, just in case one wants to stay up into the wee hours writing a missive to one's far-off beloved or something similarly Austenian.
I had a desk for intermittent daytime crafts and paper work that doubled as night table in the bedroom. It was in front of a window, and was OK. However, electronics will stay out of my bedroom, even in a smaller home. I'd have electronics in my bedroom only if my home were a single room (plus bath and kitchen, knock wood). Electronics disrupt my routine too much.
My desk (and sewing machine, and craft materials) are in the bedroom because it's twice as big as the guest bedroom. Plus I like having my work space in a different room than my partner's workspace.
I have two desks & two rooms, so yes one desk will likely end up in the bedroom but the top will be kept bare, well, except for maybe my handbag.
I would definitely not work in the bedroom but agree a space is nice for card writing or to put on makeup if someone else is using the vanity space.
Love, love, love the middle pic desk although can't stand the chair and the curtain.
We don't all have the space to spread out and put our desks in separate rooms! I need the desk to be in a space where I can shut the door and be free of distractions, so the bedroom is the only option.
Having bed and desk in the same room doesn't interfere with either sleep or productivity -- I confess I've never understood that concern!
It sounds like you have the good fortune to have strong inner focus. People with less of that quality may benefit from bedrooms that encourage relaxation by excluding reminders of work. A soothing, simple bedroom is especially beneficial in stressful times.
My husband and I just had this discussion. We have a full office set up in the guest room but I've commandeered it as I'm writing a dissertation. We ended up agreeing to a *tiny* desk in the bedroom but to NOT keep anything on it. It is just to use for talking unexpected work calls or grabbing quiet time if the other rooms are busy.
I have no choice other than having the desk in the bedroom. Not 'a desk' but 'the desk'. Unless I want to sit at the sofa to work then the desk is where it all happens. We are both students so there is a lot that happens beyond writing some thank yous at that desk.
Ultimately I'd love to have a home office for that kind of thing (and previously we did) but living and budgeting is a game of gives and takes. In our case we gave up some space in order to gain a much better and more convenient location.
For a website called 'apartment therapy' this site seems to deal a lot in huge spaces. There is another post recently about having a sofa at the end of your bed. The rent for our apartment is $1720/month and I can barely fit the desk in the bedroom with a queen bed, never mind a sofa (and we pay one of, if not the lowest rent in the building).
