Bedroom Eye Candy: Low Bed In Front of a Window

For a long time, our bed was sans headboard: We had a simple West Elm lowriding bed frame pushed up against the wall. It wasn't until we made the leap and got a "proper" bed frame when we realized how very nice it was not to have the throw pillows constantly sinking in between the cracks of the mattress and the wall. But despite our affection for our new bed, we still have a soft spot for Japanese-style low beds with no headboards, like this one photographed here...

This bedroom looks so calm and inviting, though probably not so practical for our habits, i.e. reading before bed. Still, it's pretty to look at and the light flooding through the windows is enviable. Sigh.

Beautiful! Where can you find low tables like the one at the foot of this bed. Love this.

I agree, there is something so simple and inviting about that look. I have never had headboard for my bed simply because I couldn't be bothered to buy one. So in my new place I painted one narrow wall deep blue and pushed the bed lenghtwise up against the wall. Now it looks almost like a daybed because the bed takes up the whole wall (its a very narrow room) and the window right in the middle of that wall above the bed gives me tons of light when i wake up in the morning!

P.S. Cute pup snoozing in the foreground...I have two Rhodesian Ridgebacks myself!

This is just a stunning, stunning room. It looks comfortable and inviting and yet put together and well-thought-out.

Lovely room - but I want a headboard AND a footboard. I finally got a headboard, but my mattress still slides down - the result of having allergy covers on the box springs, I think. No money for that investment at the moment, sadly.

I'm curious as to how you keep the pillows from sliding off or losing tem in the night back down by the window? And the table is gorgeous btw. Nice.

my dog would think it's a giant dog bed for him... and not sleep on the rug at the foot.

I love all of these colors and textures together..love the ridge too, he looks older.

deedee914 I had my bed like this once and the large pillows acted somewhat of a headboard and they would fall off but having three layers (rows) of pillows is helpful.

You can accomplish this look and still have a headboard. This isn't an either/or. If you look at the euro pillows, they rise almost 12 inches from the top of the mattress so a headboard 12-13 inches above the mattress wouldn't block any more light and would allow you to have back support when sitting up and reading in bed.

If you want a low headboard, you will have to go custom. That was the conclusion I reached after searching for many, many months. My headboard rises 13" above my mattress and was made to my specs by Viesso in Santa Monica.

About pillows: for people of petite stature, such as myself, pillows can well away from the head of the bed before feet dangle over the foot, so it's not a problem -- there is sufficient mattress to hold lots of pillows. (I would think that even tall people who are actually using the pillows, as opposed to just having them on hand to lean on while reading or something, would find there is enough room for them as well...)

Looks pretty but I like a reasonably tall headboard to lean against when I read.
