When you live in a small space, you need furniture that can do double duty — seats that act as tables, tables that act as desks, and nightstands that can hold your lamp and house your sweaters.
Sure, pieces with clean, leggy silhouettes are nice, but sometimes you need bedside tables that can do more than just look pretty. These? These are bookends for your bed that can hide stuff! Stuff, that were it out, would make you look like a slob, but that when tucked away, makes you and your home look neat, sleek and (dare we say it?) — organizationally savvy!

What, no mention of the $30 Ikea Rast? It's everyone's favorite DIY nightstand.
ProfKD - "with drawers"
"It's everyone's favorite DIY nightstand."
Um - No, it's not.
Nice to see AT espousing the virtues of real nightstands with drawers rather than the impractical old-chair-next-to-the-bed silliness.
Another modern piece that works as a great nightstand - particularly for platform beds - is the BluDot Modulicious #1

Besides #3,#7 and #10, these are kinda expensive.
I was thrilled when I saw this post because I just got rid of all my bedroom furniture ( seriously, all there is is the matress and a T.V. tray) and have yet to buy more, and was hoping this would lead me in the right direction, but I don't think my wallet will stretch this much just for an endtable.
applebomb, I'm with you! I love the anthropologie nightstand, but I'm not dropping almost a thousand dollars for it. Maybe a DIY project though ... =)
I like using small chests of drawers as nightstands. I used IKEA Engan drawers in my bedroom, though I couldn't stand the fake wood finish so I painted them white. They were the right height for my bed, gave me closed storage for all those things you need at bedside, but don't want everyone to see.
Agree with applebomb... I have a hard time believing many people could afford these!
Ours cost $130 for 2, and they were custom made by a carpenter friend of ours.
You could so easily make the Anthropologie one on your own. $1000? No thanks!
Oh my god! Did CB2 finally stop using the hideous term "grellow"? Thank you Jebus.
how about just using dressers? i painted a pair that have been in my family since the 50's, added new knobs from anthropologie (they cost a bit less than $1,000!) and voila - large bedside tables that are just the right height and store pajamas, socks, everything. plenty of room for a lamp, tissue box, flowers, a few books.
Glad to see I'm not the only one who sees most nightstands as painfully overpriced.
I have a small desk on one side of my bed and an old drafting table on the other. The desk drawers are great for all sorts of things, and my rolling wooden shoe rack fits perfectly under the drafting table. Having large surface area on top is also really great. Don't think I'll ever go back to something smaller and less useful.
I have two vintage record holders with sliding front doors: fantastic night stands for over 10 years. $5 each at a yard sale in Baltimore. :-) Similar to this http://ny-image2.etsy.com/il_fullxfull.160829386.jpg
I agree with the other comments--I am also in the market for new bedside tables, but these are ridiculously expensive!
let's be honest--if you have that much money to drop on bedside tables chances are there are plenty of good options. it is those of us on more limited budgets that could use help finding attractive, affordable options.
Yikes. I wouldn't even want to fork out $50 for the Ikea one. Call me cheap... I'll just keep looking for that curbside/yardsale/thrift shop treasure...
I would kill for the postal ones, though!
The Ikea Rast is a small chest. I was thinking of something like this:

It could also be stenciled for a look similar to the Iannone.
Don't get me wrong, I love most of these options, but they're not very affordable. The Rast chest with some beautification is much better looking than the ugly bland Malm.
Flea markets are great finds. If you're in NYC, the Brooklyn Flea has great finds at reasonable prices. Saw this affordable little piece at Anthropologie's sister company. Not too shabby for $150.

i thought it was just me! i've been looking for new nightstands about a year now & they just all seem so expensive to me. i think i'm going to bite the bullet & go for a mirrored pair from Horchow.
is the quilt in the first picture from anthropologie as well? I need it in my life...
bepsf: maybe when i make my first million i can be a snob, too. until then, there's a helluva lot more creativity and style in making use of what you have/repurposing than there is in dropping a grand on someone else's idea of trendy & hip.
Almost all of these are comically expensive. Anthropologie charging a grand for wooden crates? Hilarious.
Seriously. I'm waiting for the punchline. I'm in complete agreement with everyone else who thinks all of these bar #7 and #10 are ridiculously overpriced. And while I can appreciate beautiful but expensive things, I'm noticing that posts like this one are featuring less and less reasonable and affordable options. Come on Apartment Therapy, don't lose touch with us real people!!
