This bedroom was floor to ceiling beige and despite some really cool vintage pieces, it was all lost in the dark feeling given off by the beige cast. The bedroom after its transformation shows how a few simple changes can enhance the furnishings that already exist within a space.
There are two big changes that transformed this bedroom. The first was replacing the carpet with wood flooring to match the rest of the house. The second was covering the walls with the Phillip Jeffries wall covering Quilted Lacquer in white. This wallpaper is a heavy duty vinyl wall covering with a texture that makes you feel like you are living inside of a quilted Chanel handbag. With the shiny qualities in the wall covering it brightens the room one step further than a simple coat of white paint would do. The vintage nightstand/mirror combo blended in with the beige backdrop but the white really brings them out. Instead of using pink bedding, the gold Rococo style framed mirror was painted in Benjamin Moore's Razzle Dazzle, a fabulous fuschia.

Sprout Side Table
Beige carpet + beige walls was very blah. I don't generally like wallpaper, but plain white walls are very boring so adding texture is good idea. The pink mirror and green tutu add whimsy and pops of colour.
Think there is too much Quilted Lacquer going on in here. It would have more of an impact if it had been used as an accent. The whole space also feels about half-done. I get the pink mirror, but where is that idea repeated? And maybe that's my problem with this room. I think there are some good ideas, but there isn't anything cohesive about this space.
Also everything in this room seems too shiny, laquered, or reflective. Where is the softness?...and don't say the green tutu.
Hard to get a real sense without an "after" pic of the whole room.
???
I am kinda with dustinstruckmeyer.
The room has traditional dark bed and the armoire with super funky neon colored mirror and a manaquin with bright colors. The white shiny wall is a bit too much for my taste too but I can see some people loving that. But it is much better than before and next time, please include the same shots of before and after pictures.
Big Improvement.
Love that mirror. Bit worried it's going to fall over though.
I too would like to see a shot of the ENTIRE room. I do like the dresser and the vintage style art.
I do think the love seat at the foot of the bed is too big for the space. I would opt for something a bit 'lighter' and not something so heavy.
Over all, I see where you are going...but I don't think you are quite there yet.
BUT if you are loving it, then that is all that matters.
Why is it so difficult to take an after photo with the same view as the before shot? It makes me think someone's hiding something about the way it turned out...
@MICHAELW
My thoughts exactly. Based on the reflection in the mirror, it looks like they might in fact be trying to hide that incongruous tan loveseat, which for some reason made the cut and was allowed to stay (?!).
@BARBIEBOY
Good call. I hadn't noticed that, but you're right. I think keeping the loveseat diminishes the new look so much that it doesn't look like enough has changed for an "after" photo.
love the pink mirror. not sure about the rest. Definitely an improvement over the beige.
Thank you for sharing your room-there are some fun changes and you must love waking up to a brighter, fresher space...but can we just talk for a second about the elephant in the room?? There are furniture and style "mixes" that seem to effortlessly work and then there are those that don't...to me, the BED just seems so out of place, making the other wonderful more funky pieces seem diminished and less than they could be-my first thought would be paint it (gulp) white but with the all white walls, it might disappear totally-maybe a dark charcoal sorta distressed finish?? And then splash some big-ass horizontal stripes on the armoire and it's all good! (IMHO)
I agree with the general sentiment of the other posters here- it seems that this isn't the caliber of makeover that AT readers expect. I will say that changing the flooring/wall color is very nice, and the mirror looks much more fun in that shade of pink; but the art, furniture, light fixture and bedding are all unchanged, leaving the room with the same aesthetic as before. I don't mean this as a dig to the room owners, the changes they made are lovely- but (assuming AT intends to make interesting posts to attract clicks) this is the sort of post that makes me hit the "mark all as read" button on my feed reader a couple times per week instead of wading through actual posts.
Please get rid of that ruffled grey throw pillow on the bed. Perhaps a punchy geometric neon printed pillow would help tie in the fun neon mirror and tutu? Actually, a new bedding scheme in general might help tie in some of the elements a bit better. Not sure how to address the bed/armoire easily (other than a listing on Craigslist).
Wish i had the same view of the after as i did of the before.
I'm with Happiestcamper. It's always rather brave to share yourself, through your spaces, with the critics on a site like this, so please don't be discouraged by critical comments. Many intend to be constructive. Though I'm a neutral-background person, I'm all for the de-beige-ifying and see improvement. Love the high contrast of the new floor, for example, and the Hollywood glam of the dresser. The bed, though, seems not only wrong in color but in scale. It's a bit clunky, don't you think? A funky or classic upholstered headboard or clean-lined bed, perhaps without a footboard, would lighten the look. Bed frames don't have to be a budget buster. Finally, remember that no matter what we all say here, you're the one who has to live with your room and love it, so keep doing what makes you happy.
wow. haters gonna hate. lets look for the positive here, people. jeesh.
Meh.
Think the large scale dark bed is what is making the room dark. I'm one of those 'Don't paint the wood' people, but when I saw the before photo, I was thinking 'I hope they replaced that bed, and if not, at least painted it white.' I like color somewhere...with a white bedframe, some nice deep color could go on the wall. But if you have white walls, more color is needed...in the furnishings...on the wood stuff, the loveseat, or the bedding. The pink and green accents are a good start...though I'd start with the bigger items (the wood stuff, the bedding and the loveseat) and then add color in smaller stuff to complement the colors in those. But to each their own, I guess....
Great makeover! The white Quilted Lacquer looks fabulous! Thank you for using Phillip Jeffries!
That bed frame is WAY too big for that room. It'd be nice to see a smaller headboard and no foot board at all.
wow. Labelers gonna label. Let's allow people their opinions here (or frequent the many sites that only allow candy-coated thoughts). Jeesh.
"....heavy duty vinyl wall covering with a texture that makes you feel like you are living inside of a quilted Chanel handbag."
This line is the reason I come to apartment therapy ;-) Almost spit out my drink.
I like the after but I have a feeling I would like it more if I had pictures at the same angle as the original; somewhat hard to get a feel for the "new" space.
Can you guys have a requirement? Something like Before & Afters must have at least one photo from THE SAME ANGLE
Obviously Melissa82 has never seen the quilted Phillip Jeffries wallcovering in person. Saw it in a pewter color in a bath and everyone was going crazy for it. And yes, it does look exactly like Chanel. Sometimes photos just don't do a room(or in this case wallcovering) justice.
I wish it were a requirement of a before-and-after post that there must be pictures from the same vantage point before and after.
I suspect one of the reasons we're not being shown a whole "after" shot and instead artfully cropped vignettes is that perhaps this doesn't come together as triumphantly as hoped.
I posted my own pictures a while ago on AT and I was hurt and felt embarrassed by negative comments. Many people have the admirable notion that you should always say something nice. But at the same time, sometimes one does have a quibble or an opinion.
Well, I love it. It's a million times better than before.
I am a home stager and redesiner in the midwest; so maybe that is why see the pieces of the room did not seem to fit together. I wish you could have put more pictures of the whole space on-line. If home staging it seems a bit to personalized. However if the person who owned the room wanted some flare / redecorating you certainly did a great job. When redecorating the client is "always right" even if others disagree. Kuddos to you!
* sorry, it should have been "redesigned"
Ditto on the "after" photo. The bed frame is simply too dark and heavy for the room size.
The loveseat needs to go. Would have worked better with the bed frame painted white lacquer. Love the pair of mirrors though.
I think it is a major improvement and I like the tutu but I do ballet so ;)
