Hello, sad, old buffet, all covered in junk at a vintage shop. You look like you could use a makeover. Maybe a new color, some snazzy hardware? Oh yes! There's a new life in your future!

Ah now, isn't that better? You look so happy now, old buffet. In fact, I don't think we can call you sad, old buffet anymore. You shall henceforth be known as happy, bold buffet!
This before and after comes courtesy of Liz over at Mabel's House. Liz had originally toyed with painting this buffet white but I adore the blue she chose (Sherwin Williams "Waterfall"), especially with the addition of the snazzy red hardware. The bold new color took this old buffet from yawn over to absolutely fawn over!

Sprout Side Table
Looks good. I'm one of those wood puritans everyone complains about but this piece is new enough that paint helps it. Not pretty wood to begin with. Kitchenaid mixer to style it is a weird choice though, looks out of place.
Yeah, now there's a piece that's hard to complain about painting over the wood.
I do like the turquoise.
oh, so fun! i love a funky buffet in the kitchen. and the red kitchen aid on top (with the globe and vintage poster)? perfect!
Hate the red knobs. But they match the mixer, so...
Great. I can not look at any more posts on AT with furniture just painted white. So boring. I am glad this wasn't painted white. The color is so cute.
I would definitely paint the inside, too. Maybe a bright saffron. Or a soft red to tone with the red knobs.
I have an old buffet, different looking but probably the same period. I'd love to paint it, but it was my grandparents' and it would cause a Great Disturbance in the Family if I did.
Love it! You have totally inspired me.
Before: Hate.
After: Love.
Perfect color choice on this! And to me, there is very little that a kitchenaid mixer doesn't look good with! ;)
Now this makes me want to see the rest of the house!
so much better after
YAYAYAYYAYA! Love it!
Wow, Liz! I'm not sure I would have seen the potential in that piece. Its charming. The globe prop is already feeling cliche, though. I think its this years Put A Bird On It.
Love it :)
I am wondering, DailyNuance, how you find the before?
It makes me sad. :-(
It is an improvement but I def don't love it. not a fan of the knobs and the colour isn't that "bold"...maybe if it was more shabby chic? I don't know.
Better the after than the before, but it wasn't so hard, the before was really horrible!
It looks like a little robot now.
This looks great. And it got me to thinking of a certain style of furniture from the 70s (60s) where the carved details on the doors and drawers were actually molded plastic. [shudder] But I think that kind of piece would take paint just fine, right?
LOL elankat! I'm glad I don't own it because I would never be able to look at it the same!
I wonder if it's possible to take the feet off and make it look less like a robot? unless you're into that kind of robot furniture thing...
LOL!!! @ Dulcibella! "Great Disturbance in the Family" so true! When is a gift not really a gift .. when is comes with those hand-me-down conditions!
LOL!!! @ elankat, I thought the same!
I suppose its a bit improved with the paint and probably provides a ton of storage.
I really like the After!!!
normally I'm not a huge fan of glazing, as I think it tends to be overdone, but I think it might help bring out some of the texture of the (grapes? leaves?) embellishments.
It went from heinous to gawdawful
Very cute. I've peeped at this blog before...this girl paints EVERYTHING turquoise!
I normally hate the painted "afters" but I really like this. I always see pieces like the before for like 20 bucks in thrift stores and seeing this was like a light-bulb going off. I think you need to love your kitchen-aid to truly understand the need to accessorize with it. It's very retro-stepford-wife-kitchen. In a good way. But obviously not for everyone...
Not loving it.
turquoise and red remind me of vintage beads... i like how the paint shows off the carved details. makes me smile.
Why do people take time out of their day to say something rude. If you don't have anything kind to say, just keep browsing!
I like the turquoise color a great deal, but the red knobs don't work for me.
I wonder if the wood was salvageable because it would've been beautiful with just a light stain. Also, I take offense with the writer claiming there was 'junk' on top of this piece in the before picture. Old books, no matter how tatty, are treasures...peeks into a history we can glean no other way.
Not my taste either way, but she did a good job with it--looks nice with her things!
So much better. Way to save an eye sore from a dumpster. It looks totally cute now.
Yet another example of how to desecrate beautiful antique golden oak furniture...how incredibly misguided.
Desecrate? Isn't that a little strong? It's a piece of furniture, not a sacred religious relic...
It's your furniture. Do what you want with it. The person who built it originally did waht they wanted. Collecting and reusing old furniture is a good thing. But being old doesn't make is sacred. I personally like that you did something. Of course, turquoise is a favorite color of mine.
Wow...you ladies are brutal. Really, if you can't say something nice or at least something neutral just move on. There is absolutely no need to be mean, there are already enough mean people in the world :(
I agree housepeepers. There is nothing wrong with not loving everyone else's style. But don't be rude about it! If everyone in the world had the same style, what a boring place this would be. Just take a look, and move on. For those of you who always voice your opinion of dislike, where are your pictures for us to do the same?
Personally, I read Liz's blog often. I always enjoy seeing the home improvements she does to her thrift store finds. Sure, I am not brave/bold enough to paint things fun colors (and the colors wouldn't match my current place), but I still enjoy seeing the creations/improvements!
Hmmm, I like the red knobs a lot but I'm not a big fan of the turqoise with this piece. Maybe without the ornate carving, definitely without the feet. I'd actually like it with a darker wood finish (assuming the wood is decent enough) but in the end if the person is happy with what they created that's good enough for me.
Destroying antiques for the sake of trendiness is questionable and if saying so is "mean", so be it.
