This DIY painted floor from the blog, Spaghetti Arms, has us feeling spaghetti arms just looking at it! The chevron-print result is pretty cool:
We agree that the painter's tape and white iteration about halfway through the project also looked stunning (and may have been a first if it had actually been retained as a long-term floor finish!). But we're loving the marigold stripe, too, and are in awe of all of the work it took to arrive there.
Head on over to Spaghetti Arms to read about the process and see a few more pics.

Looks fantastic, but I kind of liked the effect with some of the original floor showing through in the second pic...
I love this. Love this. I want this.
ugh...too many chevrons on here lately. I am so sick of them!
Oh, wow, thanks! (This is Emily from Spaghetti Arms.) What a fun surprise to wake up to!
I really like the marigold strip. It adds a cheerful look to the space. Great Job!
Very cute. I also love the white with original in second picture, that could be very interesting. Congrats on perservering with the hard work!
Love the look. Might be hard to keep clean, though.
Chevron patterns are as common place as a seeing a bird on everything, already over done
Amen e53! When will this trend end? Chevron, chevron, chevron!
Put a CHEVRON on it!
Haha!! Yeh, PUT A CHEVRON ON IT!!!!!
I would never pain a fabulous wooden floor. I would probably sand it and try to unify the colour...
Hi! Emily again. It wasn't wooden--at least not actual wood parquet. It was two sheets of linoleum-like material or veneer. There is an actual wood floor underneath that we will eventually refinish, but I thought I'd have some fun with the linoelum/whatever on top until we can afford to refinish our floors.
I actually agree that chevrons are a little ubiquitous lately, and if this were meant to be a more permanent floor solution, I probably wouldn't have gone with such a trendy pattern. But like I said, eventually we'll refinish the hardwoods underneath, and this pattern seemed like it would be easy (wrong) to do over the existing parquet pattern, so I went with it. And I love it.
Thanks again for the feature and for your comments. This definitely gives me motivation to continue working on my humble little hallway.
I've definitely had tearful apologies to my husband for my crazy design adventures, ha ha. This looks great, though. Worth the tears! Oh, and definitely paint the vent white ;)
Chevrons are over.
Looks awesome--adorable and nicely executed--and your explanation about the temporary solution was good too, although I feel like you shouldn't have to explain yourself to the haters. There have been a few posts on here lately about chevrons, it's true, but I'm certain it not as many as there have been over the years here with Eames loungers, and you don't tend to see people complaining about those. A classic is a classic.
seriously, this is a great DIY. I like all three iterations and its interesting to see directions it could have gone.
'Put a chevron on it' - lol. Now I can't look at birds - or chevrons - the same way...
What's all this angst about chevrons? Just because we see a collected batch of them HERE, where people deliberately bring them together, does NOT mean "they are everywhere". How many have you seen in "real life"? *I* haven't seen many, so putting them in my home would seem fresh to me and my friends. Probably true for everyone using them. So why not assume the best and chill??!!
So much Chevron Hating going on! Your project looks great....haters you don't live there and if you did we'd paint it Black for you! Nice job.
Man! Commentors can be so snarky/arrogant sounding via the Internet. You did a great job! Even if it is temporary, it's fun!
I have NEVER seen a chevron IRL.
The hallway looks great! ^_^
I love it!
Not to mention, some people just like the pattern whether it happens to be "trendy" or not. Sheesh!
Oh! If it was not real wood it is a very good improvement on the linoleum floor, then :D. It makes this space feel light and airy. Maybe when you get tired of the Chevron pattern you get the courage to recover the real wooden floor that's undernearth the linoleum ;)
Enough with the chevrons!
+1 to urbancricket - you made me spit my coffee.
Emily, if you come back to check again, good job!
Great job! :)
This is really great! I heart chevron.
looks great
Sorry, but I don't like it. Bright yellow and bright white is a difficult combination to carry off at the best of times, and with such a bold jagged pattern it's even more offputting. However once it dulls and wears and scuffs up it might make it a bit less confronting.
Ironically I rather like the second picture - the combination of browns and white is more subtle and the pattern is more sophisticated.
COME ON! Enough with the Chevrons already! I liked the before better.
I did a "Put a Chevron on it" post, too! http://putabirdonitblog.blogspot.com/2011/08/turkey-or-trendy-3-put-chevron-on-it.html
I like the chevron pattern - I even like it when it had the blue tape on it!
I can't help but feel like people saying "chevrons are SO over" are trolling me. I mean, when I see a house decorated with damask or animal print fabrics, I personally think of those things as being "soo two(+) years ago" or whatever, but honestly, what makes you think this person cares? If they like a pattern, it is their house, and having people say "ugh that is so 6 months ago !!" is just useless and silly. Legitimate critiques like "this looks overly busy in a particular area" is one thing, but criticizing someone's design decision because a pattern they like was popular at one point seems so absurd.
I also agree with people about not ever really seeing chevrons in real life: yes, I see a lot of nice internet projects involving them, because they are very eye-catching so they get posted all around, but I have never actually seen anything like this in person.
That aside, I definitely prefer the painter's tape blue, especially because the darker areas around the edges don't stand out as much with the blue down there. But it is totally cute, and definitely a great approach to sprucing something up while you ready yourself to get rid of it.
i really liked the blue, i didn't realize it was painters tape! But i like blue so that's why i am partial to that. I also love yellow and this is a very cheerful solution to an otherwise ugly linoleum. I too have yet to see chevron patterns anywhere in my real life, though they have been popping up all over the internet. But you know what? I like my birds here and there, I also love vintage maps and globes so I suppose i am so out of style since my personal style was so like yesterday. never mind I have had these items years before they became a "trend"
sheesh people loosen up! trends might come and go but honestly I adore vintage and goodness knows that a lot of my vintage items very popular so many decades ago.
*shakes head* you dont have to like it but at least acknowledge someone put in quite a bit of work into something that was a clear upgrade.
well done chicky this could not have been and easy quick project and it is a lovely way to cover the floor til you are ready to refinish your hardwoods. enjoy!!
I really like the first one too. I haven't seen anyone use chevrons in real life either but it does seem like they are all over everything when you look at design stuff lately. I am however building a coffee table with a chevron pattern built into the table top. Just because it's "over" doesn't mean it doesn't still look good. I spray painted and old brass lamp yesterday and you know what? It looks awesome in my living room.
Yes yes the internets/AT love Chevrons and Be Calm posters, whereas real lifesies loves faux paint jobs and overhead lighting. To each their own..
NOW can we start the Herringbone trend yet? They are practically the same after all.
