Denja and Morgan decided to guy their bathroom and give it a makeover. The results are warm and comforting and best of all, they did the entire renovation process on their own! There isn't even a hint of the bathroom that used to be, but there is a vintage feel to the space. Ready to see what it looks like today?
This bathroom started out like many others around the world. It was in need of a renovation and the couple has taken that process seriously as they ripped everything out and started basically from scratch. You can follow their process over at their blog, We Live Here and also on Flickr. Their handiwork feels fresh and new with comforting vintage touches.
We say job well done and we hope to see more from the diy duo in the near future!
Thanks Denja and Morgan!

I LOVE those shelves! Where are they from?
Cute bathroom!
beautiful job!! i love the transformation. the entire room opened up!
A little bleak for me....they need some color! How about just the shower curtain?
or plants?
Small typo: gut their bathroom, not "guy" it. (Although that could be another possibility!) :p
I love the muted colors now. Is that mirror low enough for people to actually use it?
Great tub! :-)
I really like this renovation. It is a bit white-washed for my tastes. I almost found myself wanting to see more of that aqua color of the bottled soap above the sink.
I second the suggestion for plants. Maybe some succulents?
Actaully, scratch that. Maybe choose a different kind of plant. I've heard succulents aren't huge on moisture.
Wish I could do that in my apartment. Love the window!
I love it, but does that mirror seem way high to anyone else?
I like the inset "medicine cabinet", but isn't that mirror a bit too high to be useful? o.O It is nice, though. Is it from Ikea? I thought I saw a picture frame like that recently.
It looks like the wall tile is only on the walls at the end of the tub and not on the window wall. Would it have not made sense to wrap it around completely?
If you look through their Flickr set of pictures, you'll see that the sink is actually quite low and the mirror is perfect height for a person's eye level. Deceiving, ain't it?
Anyone know the source of the shelves?
Or that's the impression I get.
(The new signing in system is annoying. Where are the cookies?)
i saw this on saucydwellings over on livejournal. ♥ it!
I felt the same way about the mirror as SweetCommunist and akay. It seems like this bathroom is used by really tall people. In addition to the mirror, I would also find hard to reach for the toilet paper if it is as far away as seen in the second picture. Love the transformation though.
It's a nice start - Would like to see it when it's finished.
Yeah, the mirror height and TP holder across the room are really awkward - and the flexi-plumbing lines snaking all over are just all kinds of wrong...
...plumbing is just one of those things that you really need a professional to take care of properly.
Anita83 says that these pictures distort perspective, so perhaps that's why the two lamps over the sink/tile niche/mirror look too large to be so close together.
bepsf? Your thoughts?
bepsf - What if this is finished? The plumbing isn't difficult coming out of the wall and most things are a standard size, that's just how it looks in their bathroom with the fixtures they've chosen. Just because it's not polished doesn't make it unfinished or done poorly.
Rapunzel - You're welcome to check out the Flickr linked above, there are several shots of the mirror and the lights used above it. They are larger lamps and different than what you'd find in most homes, but that's what makes them great.
thank you so much for featuring us! the mirror is a little high for me at 5'3, but morgan is 6'3, so it's perfect for him. :)
You're welcome Denja! My husband and I have the same problem and have high mirrors as well!
it still looks like a before picture
I admire the work, but I need some (large black?) window trim.
Partly their height disparity, and partly it might be a little small as well as high... my expectations of a mirror over the sink would be that it would show my shoulders/chest, really. I doubt the sink is particularly short, since it is above the toilet tank, but I guess "standard"-height sinks present a minor issue for taller (and much shorter) people as well. So it goes.
The toilet roll placement may be off, but it's a movable stand, so it's not really an issue.
The tile not wrapping around doesn't quite make sense to me either, but I still have major envy. I live in a rental and the bathroom is a quarter that size, sobsob.
really?
"Just because it's not polished doesn't make it unfinished or done poorly."
Sarah-- I'm not saying that they didn't accomplish alot - after all, there's a whole new window and new tilework on the floor...
...but it's clearly not finished properly - anyone can see that from the lack of window trim, the odd lack of tile on the back wall and the abundance of flexi-pipe for both the sink and tub - The supply lines for the sink should each be a foot shorter, and a proper Claw-foot tub plumbing installation comes out of the floor using solid supply lines:
http://www.clawfootclassics.com/ltsupplyinstall.asp
http://www.diynetwork.com/how-to/how-to-install-plumbing-for-a-claw-foot-tub/index.html
As far as the lighting fixture - I don't have a problem with it - but it's obvious that the combination of that mirror and the niche below is awkward, even for the homeowner. If there were no niche, the mirror could be much larger and mounted lower - it would not only look better but function better for both occupants.
bepsf - If the mirror were lower the taller of the homeowners wouldn't be able to use it (as she states above), so that was by choice as I'm sure the supply lines for the tub were.
Sure other tubs might be plumbed differently and maybe they'll get there eventually, but that doesn't mean it doesn't work for the homeowners and that they didn't intend for it to have the look that it does.
Just because things are traditionally installed in certain ways doesn't mean people can't break out of a mold and do something different to create the look that they want to achieve, even when it comes to plumbing.
bepsf - morgan is a licensed contractor, the lack of window trim doesn't mean it wasn't finished properly. if you read our blog i mention that it still needs to be finished. we chose to have the pipes exposed because we like the look of it.
when we started our blog it was mostly for our family and friends to read. we had no idea that it would be on apartment therapy. sure, we would have liked it to be a little more finished before it made such a big internet debut, but we're a young couple and so fortunate to be homeowners at 22 and 23. it's awesome being able to chose the fixtures/colors that we like. we love our bathroom. it works for us.
@Denja: The comments here are typical of AT registered users' discussions of AT posts. The registered users and discussion features are set up precisely for the purpose of these discussions. Sorry you had no idea that AT was going to feature you -- common Internet practice is to ask permission before using another person's material. Apparently AT didn't do that. I'm surprised. I always assume that the owner/renter knows that his/her home will be discussed, hence, I comment freely, as do others.
I don't know how you can control who "borrows" the material you post to your blog. Perhaps a notice on each post that you would like to be asked before your material is re-posted might do the trick.
I think I speak for all of us when I say that we don't intend our comments to be a personal attack on you, your talent, or your hard work. We're just talking about what we see in the photos.
I'd love to see this room again when you've done more to it.
@sarahrae: I did check out the Flickr link. I like the fixtures. I just wonder about the placement. It's hard to tell from the photos; it seems to me they would look better a few inches farther from each other and from the mirror. (Shrug)...à chacun son goût.
Love the mirror. Where is it from?
On their blog it looks like the mirror actually is at a good height. They could hang it forward leaning from the wall but that mirror wouldn't work. They'd need a rectangular mirror. beveled would be nice.
I loooove the bathroom.
It is such a great makeover!
The mirror doesn't appear to be too high unless your a very short person.
Chiming in to say that I really love this bathroom redo. I am assuming, that similar to my house, everything is an on-going project.
In our kitchen we did half of the backsplash first and then the other half like three months later. Not the best method, but it's what can happen when there's two of you with full-time jobs with crappy PTO.
