A Funky Garden by Shirley Watts

The Gardenist

Shirley Watts had impressive artistic vision when she planned this garden. Each element, from the paving to the furniture to the plants, displays an attention to detail that makes this small garden something special.

Making a garden special is no different from making your interiors a unique reflection of your tastes. Here are some tips from Shirley's garden that you can apply to your own projects.

Make it local.  This garden is on Rose Street, and it features a sign as wall decor that ties the garden to the location. Salvage shops, flea markets and antique dealers are good places to find this kind of decorative elements.

Use materials in uncommon ways.  Adding metal letters to the patio paving makes this dominant element of the design much more interesting.

Overscale something.  Just like you might opt for a big sofa or an extra large coffee table to make a statement (and be extra useful) in your living room, this garden bench, by being extra long and strikingly shaped, gives the garden more character. Sure, a regular bench would be fine, but this one makes it special.

Include art . You will have to jump over to Shirley's website to enjoy what appear to be beautiful handmade metal screens that make a narrow corner of the garden something special.
