Kara and Tim decided to go the DIY mismatched drawer route for their new media console. Check out what they came up with after the jump...

They began by prepping and arranging the individual drawers, and then moved on to building boxes to encase each one individually. Lastly, they built one large box to house the whole system. I think they did a fantastic job on this bohemian-looking console.

No.
Oh dear.
In fairness, if you go to the design*sponge post, it looks better from far away.
I think it's wonderful; very eclectic.
Does nothing for me.
LOL Little Bonbon and Moonbase! My thoughts exactly. :-D
Why?
Nice idea but better executed here:

Ok, so it doesn't fit everyone's style, but it does fit theirs. Instead of just throwing the drawers out or buying a one size fits all made in China piece, they put effort in and created something that makes them happy and matches their decor (I agree with Sugarbakers that it looks better from further back so you can see it in the room). So I say good on them.
Eclectic and I love it! It's definitely not something that would fit with my home's decor but I love the creativity and effort. Looks great in the owner's home!
Sugarbakers—I agree.
It looks good to me, but not my taste. Wonderful creativity. However, I think either the picture is a bit crooked, or the box they used around the storage piece is crooked, making it give you a 'sloppy' feel.
However, without that crooked feel, this is a wonderful piece and the color choices are nice as well. :)
Lorint, well stated. Reuse is king.
Interesante. My cats would enjoy the open cubbies. Remove another drawer or 2 and they'd like it even more. I can see them now ... but it looks like a lot of work, and the kitties say they'd be even happier with more frequent completely fresh litter pans.
It's not my style so it really is hard for me to say..I like the "Before" picture better .."After" is too cluttered and chaotic for my taste.
Really? This is a stretch. Or, a hot mess.
I think it's jolly good. Well done!
heh - the ultimate conversation piece! with bonus functionality
That photo is doing it no justice. If you go to the site and see it in the context of the actual room it looks really great in the space!
The top row looks wonky and throws the whole piece off. I like the creativity though.
Holy Cow. I think this is fantastic! Really impressive carpentry skills.
I love that there's such a deep story behind the whole piece, and that the look could change dramatically if paint colors changed. Genius.
I think it would have looked better if the outer "box" was either thicker, or had more detail. Looking a bit like plywood stuck together.
What? I love it!
I love it! So creative and unique. It looks fantastic in the room they have it in.
I like it. I think it looks great next to her shelves!!!
I followed the jump and I still don't like it, but it would such a boring world if we all liked precisely the same thing.
I love that they reused things and it certainly is a conversation piece (good or bad.) It looks like the bottom is sagging a bit. Maybe it's the picture...
I saw something like this in Spitalfield's market last year in london. it was going for £800 at the time but i know the price tripled after the designer won a very prestigious design award. granted this project isn't quite as stylish as the Spitalfield's one, but i'm sure it doesn't cost that Spitalfield's price either. i give it a big thumbs up.
An idea I like and was planning to do with that new wooden dresser Ikea is spitting out this summer, but this really doesn't do it for me. I do agree with others who have said it looks better from far away, so I would probably give them the benefit of the doubt that it suits the space, but this is not how I would have gone about this look.
Not a fan but I click on the link and it does look really good in their space.
I wish they would have stripped the drawers down to reveal the nice plywood-grains... ?
Err... no. I think they did a nice job and I think it's clever. Not for everyone, but I I like it. Well done.
love it!! <3
I love the colors and the way they work together. I'm not a big fan of the stained wood box panels but the inside (front) completely makes up for it. As far as some other comments about how it's done better without a specific frame, I disagree in this case. I like the boxed containment.
