It was a hot pink curtain that started the ball rolling on Jae's guest room makeover. She kept the furniture, painted the walls and tackled a DIY headboard to give this room a fresh, mature update.

Jae tells us:
I really wanted to add fuchsia curtains somewhere in our home. I decided on the guest room and that sparked a domino effect of other changes. I like the idea of letting the fabrics and accessories shine with color so I painted the walls white. All the main pieces are items I already had (and were in the 'old' room) I just updated them with paint and/or fabric. I was most excited about making my own burlap headboard. It makes such a big difference. The total makeover came in at $260 which is less than buying a brand new headboard.
What a great example of the new life that budget, DIY tweaks can bring to a room!

Commercial Flour Sa...
The yellow and white pillow in the first photo would have looked fabulous in the second photo.
the white walls make the room much brighter, and i love the still-blue ceiling. but in my opinion, the pink is too much (well, probably because I don't like pink :)), but i would have gone with more blue&yellow instead of the pink. the fabric over the table lets the room feel smaller than it is.
really cool chair at the end of the bed!
I love it! I especially like the punch of the nautical stripe on the bench next to the pink curtains.
Not a fan of bright pink - but it works great in this setting. Congrats on a terrific revamp: the room looks fresh, modern, fun -- and comfortable. Great use of fabric!
When those curtains are pulled closed, the color in the room must be delightful.
I love the new room! Just not the side table. I'm just never a fan of tables with those fabric skirts. It seems very granny.
I kind of like the "Before" better, but they both look great.
The "before" was very nice but the after really sings.
already saw this a few days ago on other blogs (my, AT likes to rehash things other have done)
eww, and eww
I love everything about the "After". I'd love it even more with some different curtains that fit with the overall theme you've got going on in the rest of the room. Everything else says, "Classic" and those curtains just pull it right into something entirely different.
Looks great. I agree with mosaicwench that the yellow pillow would be great in the new room.
Really like the headboard, bench and dresser. But I think you should add some more colour, it doesn't feel as a finished room now. How about some yellow bedlinen? And I don't know what's under the fabric, but your side table screams granny. If you don't like the side table, you could probably get one for cheap (or do a fabulous DIY with the one you have now :) ) and it would look so much prettier! I agree that the yellow pillow would fit just perfectly in the room. And, I'm not so fond of pink myself, but I would suggest to add some pink accessoiries so the colour of your curtains is more integrated in the room. Oh well, those are just some things silly me would do :)
My parents have never had a guest room and I currently live in a studio, but I remember one tip on the subject is that maybe you want to not fill up all the surfaces with things so guests will actually have room for their stuff? Those bedside tables look very full....
I really liked the before but the after is so much better. Kept it colorful (I was sure the after was going to be neutrals) but made it more sophisticated. Very well done!
Definitely glad to see the blue walls gone! I absolutely love the pink curtains too:)
fab redo
Hooray Jae. I see some thought and effort in your "after" that makes me smile. That's a room any guest would find welcoming. Lovely.
I can't resist a couple of suggestions for tweaks if you have the time and inclination. Note about the fabric covered side table- If you sew, you might add a heavy lining to the back to give the cover some body and improve the read of it's overall quality OR change it out to a heavier and lined, small-geometric-print pink fabric (whew). If you keep what you have, you could run a pink fabric band around the bottom so that it now reaches the floor and you will be able to control the "drape" of the skirt. As is, this skirt lacks porportion, substance and grace and does not reflect the fun and sophistication of the rest of the room. Fabric covered tables work beautifully when they are well made and tailored. Add a piece of glass to the top for polish and finesse.
Bring back the yellow pillow of rosettes from the before. It is great looking in the scheme of things.
Lastly, the bench at the foot of the bed is functional and very chic in that wide stripe. You might wonder about painting the legs in white.
"Carry on, designer". To quote Tim
I get a "London Modern" vibe from this "After". And that is a good thing. Love this-- Good job.
I think this is a great, affordable re-do. I get the others' comments about your side tables, but not everyone has the funds to run out and buy new things. I think style is also about finding ways to use what you already have with a few improvements, and in that vein, this is a great makeover! I love the fresh combo of fuchsia, navy, and white.
The after looks very modern and the before, to me, looked softer... but I do like them both. You have very nice taste. I'd like to see a house tour.
I have only a couple of quibbles. As another person who dislikes pink, the curtains seem a bit out of place by themselves. Maybe in the space, the pink trimmed pillow is enough, but in the photos, I think you need another jolt of the color to balance. Maybe a new tablecloth for the bedside table? Or covering a lampshade?
The other thing is that, although I love the sumburst mirror over the bed, it's scale is too small for that space by itself. It would help if it were flanked by something on either side (candle sconces? small framed art?) Something a bit smaller than the mirror in visual mass, two things about the same.
Thanks for the feedback. I am not of fan of the 'granny' night table myself but have to use what I have. I plan on updating it with fabric by layering a graphic pattern on top.
Awesome after! I love the bright pink curtains and the headboard. Nicely done! I like your idea about doing the layer on top of the 'granny' night table. Good idea!
The wall color is definitely a huge improvement! Great after.
Man, a lot of people don't like pink. Well,I LOVE it. I suspect the sunlight is making it "ring" a little more neon than it really is too. But this room went from Ashwell to Adler, and I'm all for it. The "after" is more chic and smart to me. The before was very sweet, but a little vanilla. I think I've gone through a very similar design "paradigm shift" in the past few years, so I truly appreciate and applaud the move.
Love it. It looks so much more pulled-together, and it has the quieter personality a guest room should have without feeling like a generic hotel suite.
And don't let the pink haters drag you down! The curtain is beautiful.
It's like it went from tween to adult. Great job.
I think the striped bench at the foot of the bed is my favorite.
I like the soothing blue from the "before" better.
