Many of us complain about our sub-par, bad taste bathrooms and wish for something updated and modern. But let's be honest, how many of us have started out with this degree of bad? Follow me after the jump to see how April left the 1800's behind…

Photographer April Cochran-Smith chose to go with a clean, bright, and cheery look for her bathroom, using a white palette and bold, unexpected primaries. She has a very large space that now shows its scale and feels uncluttered and less visually assaulting.

What a difference...Love the new bathtub color and the Chevron curtains. White with pops of color looks amazing. Thanks for sharing.
Oh my...that bathroom was so hideous I just had to see the after. Is that...a stripe of wall paper border around the bathtub? I'm taking it previous owners didn't use the tub because I can't see how wallpaper paste would stick to the side of a wet tub? Great that you were able to achieve so much without having to redo plumbing or vanity, etc. Not sure how I feel about painting tubs. Too often it seems to go wrong.
The before was so hideous, I had to see the after. Is that a stripe of wallpaper border on the outside of the tub? Previous owners must not have used it because wallpaper paste won't stick to wet porcelain. Its great you achieved so much without expensive plumbing and tiles redo. In many houses people feel they have to gut it. I don't know how I feel about painting the tub. Too often it doesn't turn out right. I think I would have left it white and pulled in the yellow elsewhere.
Wow. What a contrast and improvement to the "before" space. Good work!
AWESOME improvement. The space looks stunning. The only comment I have, is that the art is better hung in terms of height from the floor. The new art is too high. Normally the art needs to hang center of piece to eye level of a normal person....
You can only go up from the before picture. It's not the most inspired redesign but it will definitely do.
That before was something special. Wow. Nice job cleaning up that hot mess!
:)
When I read Victorian bathroom my first thought was "Oh No" they are going to RUIN a beautiful bathroom and then I saw the before. OH MY WORD. How could anyone live with that and not get dizzy?
I too like that they didn't blow out walls to put in a sterile all white tile, hospital looking bathroom. They really did a wonderful job but what a huge bathroom. Where's the toliet? Regardless...seriously nice job.
holy moly.
The before was dizzying. And I didn't look like a place to strip naked and bathe, but the after certainly looks clean and inviting!!
Wow. I do like that the old victorian was like a regular room, and not a bathroom. I mean, it looks like a living room that happens to have a tub in it.
Good job. Glad you kept the old tub.
SO much better. Cannot even describe how much better.
Normally I prefer to preserve every historical detail in houses. But even I draw the line at garish, fun-fair, killer clown style pseudo-Victorian.
Well done.
I think I stayed in that Bed and Breakfast lodging in the first picture. Seriously, too many B&B's look like that.
The re-do is sweet. I like the painted tub. The chubby legs and paw-feet and the chunky proportions of the tub make it lookalike a companionable dog.
Great job. That room should have had a "help me!" sign in the before photo!
Since the room is so spacious, the one element I would have kept from the before is the chair. OK, maybe not that chair, but it is really convenient to have a chair to set stuff on (floor, toilet and sink all being less attractive options).
Beautiful choice with the yellow and grey/blue. Love it and wish it were mine.
I'm not trying to be mean, but wow, that before picture is AWFUL! Way to go on the redo. It looks fantastic. I love the tiled floor. Great choice!
oh thank God.... It took awhile for the photo to load and when it did I gasped aloud at the hideousness of the before picture. The after picture totally calmed me down. well done.
I have never ever seen a rose adorned tub. That before was something else. The AFTER looks great. Well done!
It's a really nice re-do. Anyone else having deja vu ? Maybe I saw this on another blog a few weeks but I thought it was on here :) hahaha you know it's a monday when....
The space looks huge by comparison to the "before."
The before does look like every B&B. Reminds me of one I stayed at in the midwest and it had a doll collection, all lined up staring at me all the time. Freaky.
The before is so absurd it's hilarious.
I LOVE the yellow tub. I'm pretty sure it's the same shade as my kitchen.
I hate the before as much as anyone here. But the problem with it is that it's dated, not that it's evil. In 20 years, most of the stuff on this website will evoke the same howls of "OMG HIDEOUS!!" People will be horrified at that bathroom chandelier and the bright yellow bathtub, which look very pleasant and stylish today.
Well... the before was certainly over the top plus needing some work but the after is even less appealing. It looks like random stuff in a white room, nothing to pull it together. I laughed at the B&B comment. It did look exactly like an enthusiastic B&B owner trying to be heritage.
Good point, Polly
@anusha -- I agree that the artwork is hung too high for my taste. My rule of thumb, since I'm of average height, 5'7", that art should be hung at my eye level. Otherwise I feel that I have to look 'way up at it...
I don't mind the painted tub, but I would not have chosen school-bus yellow. The Victorian wallpaper was just too overwhelming for me, although I love the Victorian style of fixtures. The chevron curtains and the beadboard are great!
The room had such nice elements - good size, big windows, high ceilings, clawfoot tub - but the wallpaper, flooring and coloring scheme made it look tiny and claustrophobic.
Sooo glad that the owner played up the original elements in a colorful and fun way! Not as visually assaulting, and now a nice and bright bath! :)
That before pic looks like something my stepmother would kill for. Thank GOD I don't have to endure her "design style" any more! I love the after! Bright, cheerful and above all, CLEAN looking!
I don't think I can ever complain again about my boring apartment. It could have been so much worse! I love the color scheme and light fixture in the redo.
The after is certainly miles ahead of the before, but I agree with whoever said something about seating. With a room that size everything looks disconnected. I would probably look for a wooden park-type bench, perhaps painted a light gray, or white washed.
Sometimes when you say "Mommy make it stop" you stop it so completely dead in its tracks that it's just not funny. There are always things that I would do slightly differently, but I so very much understand the need to calm things down from that busy-ness in that first photo, that it really doesn't bother me at all that they stripped it so much in the "after". Once the owner eventually heals from the PTSD that living with the "before" is bound to have inflicted, they might warm it all up a tiny bit more.
I wanted to joke and say I preferred the before, but I couldn't bring myself to do so. Great job!
I love the update! The yellow bathtub is just fantastic! The "before" picture actually made me a little dizzy it was so busy!
I clicked and murmured under my breath "please keep the claw foot!" so so glad you did. :)
The article says the remodel took her "2 weeks plus a couple of years of decision making". I could not have lived with this bathroom for one second. However, great reno...it went from "OUCH!" to "Ahhhhhhh".
While it is a vast improvement on what it was like before, there is something bothering me about the after that I can't quite put my finger on...someone mentioned the word bleak earlier and maybe that's it. I think the nook with the bath should be cosier in some way.
The Before was so fugly that it was almost special. Unfortunately, I don't see the AFTER as an improvement. Not a bathroom that I see as inviting for a soak. The yellow tub with the red pictures and the blue-gray ... meh. I would rather live with the Before (but I would strip the carpet),.
Your bath looks crisp and inviting! I love the yellow submarine tub(:
I don't like yellow, but your "new" bathroom is a 500% improvement!!! Good job.
That before really was rather spesh...
I couldn't resist seeing the after....what a massive relief! I'm so glad you kept the lovely claw-foot tub.
While the yellow is not what I would have chosen I think it really works. There is plenty of white so it looks fresh and fun and contemporary.
I'm just amazed at the size of the window in a bathroom - it goes so low! Is it on the ground level? I hope the glass is treated for privacy - hard to tell, but it seems to have windowfilm on it?
I like the fun yellow tub, but I really don't understand painting the wainscoting... I have always felt that it should be kept a wood color, and not painted. And certainly not painted to match the rest of the wall.
I love the after, but you should have been a bit more accurate with your title, the before is as Victorian as a bad late 1970s, early 1980s job. Unless by "Victorian" you meant the era when Victoria Beckham was born?
Before photo: remember that short story (Roald Dahl?) about a landlady of a B&B who would poison her guests with almond-flavored (arsenic?) tea? How did AT get a hold of a picture of her bathroom?
I'm pretty sure that I too stayed in the B&B that had the before bathroom. The after is soooo much better than the bad 80's Victorian.
I literally cannot stop laughing at the "before". The "after" is great but holy cow, I wish I could have seen the "before" in person.
I actually kind of liked the before carpet... not to actually have in a bathroom, but as it's own thing. Probably more acceptable as flor carpet tiles?
WOW..how to go from 100% wrong to 200% right.. the 'after' is timeless and fresh while maintaining the heritage values of the room.. the 'before' is an attack on all my senses.. please issue a warning in future before opening a post on a room this bad!
@CanadianMango
I know. The 'after' is nothing like as good as it could have been. An improvement of course, but it could have been SO much better.
I'm not all that taken with the after either and agree that it will some day be laughed at as weel for the yellow and the chevron.
Like some other comments, I think a chair or stool would be a definite plus for the new room. Plus, an exercise bike or treadmill would work. I hate the yellow tub although I like bright colors; it puts the tub too much into your face. And I agree with others - too much white.
detoxificating
Well done! I think the only thing this room needs is a length of tiny fairy lights draped over the window and down the sides (nothing fancy, just hung on the rod). Lights out, fairy lights on, some relaxing music and a glass of viognier...bliss.
I'm assuming there is a chair/hooks in the part of the room we can't see? I also tried not to mention this but I really must... are those pictures eye level? They seem a tad high...
I did not like the before because the wall paper and flooring were hideous. The re-do is an improvement but will soon becoming dated with the all white floor tile, yellow tub and chandelier. To keep the bathroom timeless and appealing for the long term the flooring should have been updated or backdated as the case may be to one of the following tile patterns: a black and white hexagonal tile, spiral tile or basketweave tile with a light gray grout. The all white tile with all white grout is too stark and the grout will be difficult to keep clean. A cool looking vintage light that can be easily changed such as Rejuvenation Hardware's: Menlo, Upshur, or Powell would be more classic and less likely to be broken.
Wonderful!! I "had" to look! Job well done love the pop of yellow!!!
The improvements are better but it doesn't look finished. Here's what will help. Colors need to to be repeated around the room to tie things toghether. I would suggest painting below the bead board the blue of the sink. Add the bench as suggested and paint the red in pic frames. The white mat could be changed to black and white zebra (something inexpensive) Second problem to much negative space (to bare) things are not in perportion the plant is to small, the pics too high. You need bench instead of chair due to size of room. To th bench add pillows with yellow in them (a print) you only need to repeat little of this color. If you do this you won't have the comments about being stark and something missing and you really only have to purchase the bench some paint and some pillows. You'll be amazed how balanced the room will look and not so bare. I think if you do this people will like your yellow tub better. It will blend better and not stick out so much.
Oh my gosh...I thought to myself...who threw up all of those pink flowers?!?!?!?!?! The after is really cute!
I honestly thought the "After" photo was the "Before" shot of another project. Its that bad!
Good job with an inexpensive re-do. I agree that the room needs a chair, though. Also, the scale of everything seems too small. I'd have chosen a single large image over the tub and a more dramatic light fixture.
Agreed. Both ugly in their own special way. The more I look at the *after*, tho, the more the 80s Victorian is growing on me. I think two years wasn't long enough to ponder if that's the best they could do. I mean, that's still an 80s blue paint! And who paints a countertop that's constantly going to get wet?
Oh, dear.
My own style is clean & modern.
Having said that, I prefer the "Before" bathroom. It looks like a nice place to take a bath in somene's home (maybe while visiting a great-aunt?) Whereas the "After" looks so cold and bare. No way would I want to take a bath there.
"Busy" wallpaper is never a good idea--yet people are doing it again & calling the patterns "modern." This year's chevron & last year's lattice are no less dizzying than this '80's floral.
And I definately agree with the other posters who object to painted countertops!
