I'm always amazed at what people can accomplish over a weekend. I'm definitely ambitious with home projects — but quick I am not! Not only did this bathroom get a mega facelift, it was pulled off for under $200 … and wait till you see what they came up with for the accent wall!

Cathy knew her bathroom was in dire need of a complete remodel but wanted a quick fix until she got around to it. The outdated oak cabinets were primed and painted a semi-gloss black, while sleek chrome hardware was added to update the basic cabinetry. While this alone would have been a drastic improvement, my eyes are immediately drawn to the paneled wall. By simply gluing and nailing MDF boards to one wall (by her handy and accommodating husband!), they achieved the look of fancy paneling on what was otherwise a boring plain wall. The two towel hooks and cool white paint completes the coastal cottage look they were trying to achieve, but also brightens up the windowless space.

Wow! Refreshing change. Totally inspired!!
Whoa, that is one wood paint-over absolutely no one is going to be crying "keep the original!" over. So much better now.
Looks great, love the paneling, but the "before" cabinets are completely different cabinets in a completely different space! Is the pic just to show the look of the pre-painted ones?
I noticed the discrepancy with the "before" and "after" cabinets, too. What's up with that?
Looks like they also redid the floor?
the cabinet/floor configuration was bothering me, too, so i clicked through. the homegoods blog says: "The cabinet before is in another bathroom in my house, but it was the same finish as the one I painted. I forgot to take the “before” picture before I primed the cabinet, so I knew there was another ugly one to show how it looked before. That bathroom is next on my list to redo."
They probably did the project, like the after so much and wanted to share, and photographed the same ugly cabinets in their other bathroom (or neighbor's bathroom) for the feature.
Then painted them as well.
Good job.
Terrific re-do! Inspiring.
AT -Kindly stop with the pictures that aren't related to the post - the first picture is totally unnecessary. It detracts from the powerful transformation and great work.
That before IS definitely not even the same room as the after photo ... Even though the after is nice, I call BOGUS on this before-and-after!
In the comments on the HomeGoods site, she explains that she took the before pics in another bathroom in her home.
Critics, please.
@potpie Why is the first picture unnecessary? I don't get it...
Oh black cabinets...so pretty. But in a weekend? I wasn't able to even finish a tiny nightstand in a weekend due to the drying time between coats.
The best before and after I've seen on here.
Amazing transformation! Bravo homeowners!
@potpie I find the inclusion of the first picture really inspires me to consider painting over supposed "good wood." I've always had a major reluctance to paint over wood of any kind but this type of transformation is inspiring me to remain open to the possibility. I need all the inspiration I can get so I won't feel guilty when I finally take paintbrush to wood. I'll keep absorbing the encouragement offered in these bold steps taken by others.
Looks amazing! And they didn't have to gut the bathroom like most renovations I've seen on AT
ditto velabeachgirl
Well done! That's an excellent transformation!
old fashioned board and batten, next to contemporary looking cabs.... hmmmmm, not sure if I like the two together, but the update was needed and looks good.
amazing, job so very well done. I admire you guys on this... i'd hold off on a "complete" redo this is a complete redo!! it's a brand new bathroom and I LOVE the cabinets now!.. can't wait to see the other bathroom redo :D
great job! i can't believe what a different the black paint makes, it looks so classy!
Love it! Want to do it! This weekend! But what kind of paint, primer, roller/brush does one use for this project???
Help!
Love!
Wow, I can't believe the poor design of that blog. You can't find a permalink for anything! In one week, we won't be able to find that post on their blog, making this AT post useless too.
Very inspiring and cheap makeover.
@kmk355: agreed no permalinks anywhere. If you google the blog post, you can find it. Here's a bookmarkable link for you: http://www.homegoods.com/blog/2011/07/31/weekend-bath-facelift-under-199/
I'm going to copy that black vanity! I have a weird, white washed one with a green tint. That's now on my To Do list.
@hasidesign thanks!
