We asked lifestyle expert Danny Seo (who blogs at Daily Danny) to share a before and after project with us this month. He sent in a from scratch bedroom design for a celebrity client in West Hollywood …
...and the After!
Danny tells us: My client had to quickly move into her apartment and rush to a movie set, esentially giving me the keys to her home and unlimited freedom to do whatever I felt was needed. The transformation involved putting in new flooring, paint on the walls, new furniture and great bedding to turn it from college dorm room into cozy chic. The green elements include a natural latex bed from my own line of mattresses; soy enhanced foam upholstered bed from Mitchell Gold; zero VOC paints from Benjamin Moore; Anso-nylon recycled carpet from Shaw Flooring; lots of organic cotton bedding from a variety of sources and fun artifacts from her existing collection of pieces.

this was in one of the oprah magazines a couple of years ago. kerry washington's apartment. the end result was very cute.
Yes, I agree that was from Kerry Washington's apartment. And that it is cute, but I wished he had sent something current. Also, why do people send before photos that include a very stark room? I'm sure Kerry wasn't sleeping on the mattress without any kind of linens.
I like the wall color a lot for a bedroom! Otherwise, I'd like to see a few more pictures to really be able to appreciate the 'after' aspect of this makeover.
what happened to that chair in the first picture? looked cool
Not to go against the grain here and maybe its just the picture, but I am just not a huge fan of this room. If this wasn't a celebrity client and if someone did this themselves, I might give a little slack but its really just lackluster.
I agree with @labchick. It needs to be a lot more special to impress. The colors and the way the blocky furniture is arranged remind me of certain depressing inns in Vermont I've stayed at where the decor hadn't been updated in 20 years. Also, what's with the tiny, tiny picture above the bed?
The paint color is beautiful, and I like the windows. But otherwise this room is very bland and impersonal. It looks like a poorly staged catalog shot.
Steps for the bed? Is the bed really that high, or is the client very short?
Anyone recall where the zig zag euro shams came from? Have been looking for something like that. Thanks!
Also, the term "lifestyle expert" makes me want to gag a little.
yep, thought i'd seen this somewhere before. What's old is new again.
This looks as though it could have been done by anyone. Not impressed at all. I'm not big on Danny Seo's aesthetic to begin with, but I've seen far better work from him than this.
Yes please, where to get the zig zag shams -- and the greek key pattern quilt! I have been looking for anything greek key pattern that fills the whole instead of just the borders of pieces (curtains, rug, quilts, etc.) where for art thou? (Yes, I know about Jonathan Adler -- Love --but is just too pricey por moi). HALP!
The steps are probably for a pet
Lifestyle expert? Lol.
Design looks old...dislike the tiny portrait above the bed,
The room is fine.
Not "wow", but that's okay.
Looks nice.
Love the lampshade!
I'm only interested in what poor people do with design, sorry.
I think it's beautiful. Simple, but not empty. Homey but uncluttered.
I'm not impressed with this makeover. It looks old...like it was the before picture. And I can't imagine of all the flooring to install that a designer would choose that carpet. Not feeling this...
If Kerry Washington wants to throw her money away on eco-vaporware like "organic" cotton sheets and a "soy-enhanced" bed, then that's her perogative. Just don't expect me to applaud her for it.
As for the look, it's nice, but it'd be better to keep the bedlinens neutral and shift those bright colours onto accessories elsewhere in the room.
elbebuz- why dont u buy some greek key fabric & sew it onto a solid comforter leaving a border around it? (u could possibly quilt or tuft it...?) that could b a cheap option esp. if u already have one u could use...
the zig zag shams look like the rubie green print.
Not appealing at all. Does not look like a "professional" did this. Very boring and kind of old lady like. Nothing against old ladies. LOL
I'm not blown away by this either, but plenty of people want their bedrooms to be soothing and homey, rather than impressive. Perhaps even more so when you are a celeb who is always on the road.
Also, if this is trying to be "beach cottage" in theme, then I think this is exactly right. You just can't/shouldn't make beach cottage look very out there.
Was the first photo taken during moving day? Looks like someone was still unpacking and setting the room up...anything would be an improvement over that empty room with no bed linens
This apartment makeover was featured in Oprah. You can see the whole slideshow here (although there are no before photos): http://www.oprah.com/world/Kerry-Washingtons-Green-Apartment-Makeover
I agree it looks a little lackluster, except for the red white chevron curtain, but I think they were trying to highlight it as a truly eco-friendly makeover.
