We got a great email from Beverley: I just wanted to share a creation that wouldn't have happened if not for you. My husband and I recently moved into new apartment that had one wide open room for the kitchen/dining/living area - and I was looking for a kitchen island to break up the space and create a workspace so the cook wouldn't always have to have their back to the rest of the room, and to create a little bit more storage space.
After seeing your post on DIY kitchen islands a couple of months ago, I was inspired to forego an IKEA or other pre-made solution and make something that would be unique to us.
It took a bit of shopping around, but I finally found a great little unit at the St. Vincent De Paul thrift shop in Cypress Park/Lincoln Heights. I picked up some glass tiles at my local tile shop, and pulled some leftover paint out of my closet from another reno job. Add a repurposed towel rack (from the old apartment) and we had a new workspace, and a beautiful island. Here are the results. I've attached before and after shots.
Thanks so much for being such a great resource!
Really nice job on the island and thanks for sharing your inspiring project with us, Beverley!
