We got a great email from Beverley: I just wanted to share a creation that wouldn't have happened if not for you. My husband and I recently moved into new apartment that had one wide open room for the kitchen/dining/living area - and I was looking for a kitchen island to break up the space and create a workspace so the cook wouldn't always have to have their back to the rest of the room, and to create a little bit more storage space.
After seeing your post on DIY kitchen islands a couple of months ago, I was inspired to forego an IKEA or other pre-made solution and make something that would be unique to us.
It took a bit of shopping around, but I finally found a great little unit at the St. Vincent De Paul thrift shop in Cypress Park/Lincoln Heights. I picked up some glass tiles at my local tile shop, and pulled some leftover paint out of my closet from another reno job. Add a repurposed towel rack (from the old apartment) and we had a new workspace, and a beautiful island. Here are the results. I've attached before and after shots.
Thanks so much for being such a great resource!
Really nice job on the island and thanks for sharing your inspiring project with us, Beverley!

I LOVE it! How long did it take you to tile the top? I've never tiled but this seems like a great first tile project because it's small.
That green is wonderful too.
I LOVE this...how exciting!!! (I might have used brushed nickel drawer pulls to match the tile but that's just me.) What a treasured find! Love the way the towel bar nests inside the space on the end...the tiles are a GREAT idea! Love it!
Very nice! You'll wonder how you ever functioned without it.
I like what you did with the cabinet, but I'd have made the top a lot bigger, so there'd be an overhang. Maybe a piece of granite? That would make for more workspace PLUS a place to pull up a couple of stools.
What an awesome idea!
nice work!!!
What a fine job! Is that a short children's wardrobe? I once had a small kitchen with little storage and counter space. I thought a small island would solve the problem. Several people told me the kitchen was too small for an island, but I put together a just-the-right-size stack of boxes as a faux island and lived with it a few days. It worked--I got (and loved) my island.
Nifty. Nice work on the kitchen floor, too.
Nice find- I <3 St. Vincents too! :)
Great idea.
Very nice!
