Melissa wanted modern glamour for her daughter-to-be's room, and searched everywhere for the perfect inspiration. She found it in photos, not of other nurseries, but of sophisticated rooms with luxe finishes. To achieve the look, Melissa painstakingly measured, taped off the walls, and painted irregular horizontal black stripes on one accent wall. Pops of pink complete the effort.

Melissa shows the whole process on her blog, House to Home, along with more photos of the completed space. I think you'll join me in saying "nice job!"

Shaw's Original Fir...
Wow! I love it. Beautiful effect!
It is beautiful but it doesn't look like a nursery.
Beautiful! I don't see how it doesn't look like a nursery...the sweet butterfly mobile and pink polka dot sheets don't scream "adult." My daughter's nursery isn't babyish either, and we love it. She can grow into it, and it fits with the rest of our house.
Medusa, I'm guessing that not everyone finds black stripes 'nursery-ish.' It is rather sophisticated for a nursery, but that is clearly what the parent was striving for. Why not?
The black and white stripes actually make a TON of sense for an infant's room. Infants don't see the world the same way we do. They have trouble focusing, their visual acuity is much worse than adults and do best with high contrast in patterns. You can't get any more contrast than black and white.
Bar code baby.
I actually don't mind the stripe (and I wish I'd read her process for preventing paint seepage before I tackled a project and re-painted said project when all my paint seeped)
I hope she adds some hot pink to the mix though and some other fun elements
What Muirgen said. I love it. That before is the funniest before ever.
Light shades and big teddies are so stereotypical for a baby's room.
I like how these parents have gone beyond that and really given their child a room that's totally unexpected and out of the ordinary.
Love it!
Very nice! And because B/W is so important for babies' development it will be easy to accessorize. http://www.geniusbabies.com/blacwhitredt.html
Agree, black and white is great for babies, they love the contrast. I had a black and white poster in my daughters room and she loved staring at it. I think it is a beautiful nursery.
Yes! That is the best "before" picture ever.
I love the soft pink mobile in contrast to the bold stripes. Beautiful!
Thanks for featuring our daughter's room! I had no idea until one of my readers emailed me saying she originally found my blog via Apartment Therapy. I've had so much fun accessorizing her nursery with fuchsias, light pinks & gold.
