Brooke Lovell never lived in Ridgewood, Queens even though her family has had roots in the area for over 100 years. But in 2005 Brooke became part of the legacy when she and her mother bought a 3 apartment row house together. Brooke took over the garden level apartment and transformed what was a workshop into a Coal Miner’s bungalow.
And talk about an undertaking! When Brooke moved in the room had two built-in horse stables that were literally filled with coal from an old furnace. Now one stable is a dressing room and the other her bedroom.
This isn’t a "what once was old now is new" job. Brooke incorporated a lot of the treasures she found during the renovation. A discarded oil drum is now her trashcan. An antique shopping cart keeps pots and pans at hand. Her storage space is made up of old dry goods barrels, vintage tool chests, cigar boxes and jars with labels like “grape jelly 1966.” Even wooden crates which most people toss to the curb became Brooke’s bathroom shelves. A true re-user, this home is a charming example of embracing what’s there and making it your own.
If you like the look of Brooke’s collectibles, be sure to visit her Williamsburg antique store called Obscure Object, located on North 3rd Street at Wythe Avenue.
Thanks Brooke!

Shaw's Original Fir...
The term "garden level" always makes me LOL. It's the basement!! You live in a cellar! Granted, a very cozy and artfully decorated cellar i am insanely envious of, but still ;)
Sleeping in a former horse stall? My inner 9-year-old self is so jealous. My adult self loves this! Cozy and a lot of ingenuity - I like!
Wow, super job! Do you want to come over and fix up my 1911 basement like that next? My before is pretty similar to yours, although you seem to have a higher ceiling with less pipes and such running overhead. I'd have never dreamed it could turn out like your place.
My first thought on seeing picture #3 was "ugh, what a mess!" and then "ooo! is that a card catalog?" swoon! there's a lucky lady who knows when she hit the jackpot of cellar treasures.
No disrespect intended, but this doesn't look finished, and if I didn't know better, I would have thought the "after" shots were "before" shots. It's dark and looks like it'd be damp - both probably because it's in the basement.
Love it, that view from your bed must give you so much pleasure and very happy dreams.
Balancing a look like this with ease of cleaning seems difficult. Love it. Just glad I'm not cleaning it.
i just purchased a townhouse in Middle Village and this (before) basement looks EXACTLY like my basement!!! i just printed the photos for ideas and inspiration. THANK YOU for sharing!!!!!!!!!
A garden level is not necessarily the basement. Some homes, like mine, have the basements underneath the garden level. This one, because it has livable space, is a true garden level. Basements can't be lived in.
Lots of light, and only half below grade. Nice.
