Harry Potter isn't the only one with a cramped cupboard under the stairs. KariAnne Wood had a similarly awkward closet off the living room in her farmhouse. Previously it was just wasted, forgotten storage for random things, so she decided to make it a more useful and special spot in the house.

Now it's a wonderfully useful little home office. The black and white palette is crisp and clean and really packs a punch, especially given the smallness of the space.

Very nice! I love this space!
It looks very nice, and good use for such a small space.
Cuter than cute.
Charming. And black and white is always fresh.
Great job, I have to paint my wood paneling someday.
Looks lovely. I'm wondering -- has anyone here transformed a closet this way and then found it actually useful as an office? It looks cramped to me, and I can picture myself going to the effort of overhauling the closet, then continuing to work at the dining room table where I can spread my stuff out. Also, those in/out baskets look super-cute but the way they are placed I would not use them but instead just pile stuff on the same dining room table. Maybe I'm just really lazy!
kudo's!!!!!!!!!!!! very nice.
great job @KariAnne
Yep. We made a very cute office in the guest bedroom closet. We hung gorgeous linen curtains where sliding doors had been, painted it black, and outfitted it with a farm table desk and vintage filing cabinet. We already owned the curtains and furniture so it cost nothing to do and boy am I glad because we never use it. We still pay bills on the couch and at the kitchen counter.
this looks adorable but I wonder like angeline about the long term use of a closet office, I wouldn't like feeling confined, or giving up storage
Whoa! I really didn't expect it to make such an impact, but it looks freakentastic!!! That's right...I made up a word to describe how freakin' fantastic this is!
First, that corkboard frame MAKES the space! Excellent choice!
Second, I think utility depends on how you use a home office. Mine is not in a closet, but would easily fit there. I check my email, read a bit on Facebook, complete my online tax forms, and stuff like that -- spending as little time as possible at my desk (after working at one all day...) So for me it would be quite functional. If you do serious work and have lots of things you need to spread out to do it, a closet office might not be the answer for you. (On the other hand, even if you actually WORK mostly on the dining room table, if you tidy up after yourself and put stuff away in this nook, it would make a prettier storage place for all that stuff!)
I'm with angeline and ec05: Cute, but not functional (but has potential). Why would an office space need two clocks and books that are covered so they cannot be identified and an 'inbox' that is hard to reach and hard to see? On the plus side: I have to say it looks much much better than the before, and the black and white are crisp and neat. "Gets a dramatic makeover" is the perfect title for this post.
The project turned out amazing, visually!! As far as functionality, I think part of it depends on where it's located in the home. If it's near the kitchen, dining or living areas it might be used a lot. Since you're still were all the action is, you can spread out on a larger surface and easily put it away when done.
Ideally, I'd love to have a small desk like this in my kitchen. For now, I've set up an "office" space in front of a large picture window in my bedroom. I used a very wide but narrow hallway console table I was about to get rid of, and it not only looks nice but gives me lots of surface area. I usually do my computer work on my laptop on the sofa at night, but at least my computer, papers, etc. have a "home" when not in use and my place feels neater and more organized. Now, if only I could get my husband and son on the same page!!
Painting this alcove made it 100% better.. and using it as a office area is brilliant! It looks just beautiful!!!
Nice to have a window in your closet! This is darling.
What a perfect home office nook and such a great transformation..love the styling and the detail. Now i wish i had some stairs so that i could transform underneath! damn you bungalow living!
Totally functional for office purposes and beautiful for aesthetic purposes. A double score!
