Dena, an Apartment Therapy reader sent in some photos of a quick dresser design update. If we could do a show of hands, I'm sure there are plenty of us who had similar white, somewhat ornate dressers like this one growing up. Dena streamlined hers and gave it a bit of a more modern look…

A coat of a brighter white and new, royal blue hardware, along wiht the removal of some decorative details gives this piece an entirely different flavor. Whether you'd personally go for the more vintage look or the more contemporary update, you'll agree that it is another strong example of the power of paint and color!
Thanks for sharing the project, Dena!

Great idea! Love the blue handles against the white of the dresser. The after looks much more sleek!
i am not a fan of the style of these blue handles. Looks a bit too bulky with the....oh she took off the wood appliqué. How sad :(
I think whats not doing it for me is the handles. I would have preferred the same handles but in that same color to what you have now, but it's also not my dresser so whatevs. But that is one fantastic paint job! I usually see the trim pieces mucked up with drips. Nice job!
I agree with mariyaodessa. She did a great job on the paint but i dont love the handles. Well, actually i sorta like the single small blue handles but not the double handles. I would have tried to salvage the old ones- maybe with a shiny coat of rustoleum or trying to strip off the paint.
But to each her own! I'm sure it looks great in the context of the room.
Very nice! I like the handles - they are unusual and give the dresser a bit of oomph.
I love this updated look and I happen to like the blue handles! I think they're bright, splashy, and add a nice touch.
Oh, and never mind one like it, I had that SAME EXACT bedroom set when I was growing up. I wonder if that one was mine...
Looks great! I love that color contrast
I think anyone who updates old furniture is putting their personality into it (and usually saving $$ and reusing instead of throwing out, which are both great things) and should be proud of what they've done. :) It might not be everyone's preferred style, but it's obviously Dena's and I'm sure it looks superb in whatever room it ends up in.
Much improved. I love the color of the new hardware, but agree that it is a bit clunky. Still, the update is great.
I LOVE the handles! It's a risk but I like it :)
far more prefer 'before'.. :/
I like it but I'm wondering if those same blue handles come in amber or orange...
I liked it better before too. Sorry!
The blue handles are jarring in a not good way. Also I think the appliques actually made it look more unique before.
Raises hand for "had that set when I was little".
I think those handles aren't bad with the style of that dresser. But really, those wood appliques had a lot of charm, and I kind of wish they were still there. Hopefully she kept them to sell on eBay -- people do buy that stuff.
I was thinking "I'll take those" regarding the wood appliques. I think you did a GREAT job changing it up to something that fit your taste and mood. Later on, you can change it again if the mood strikes you.
I redid a similar dresser. Those beloved and much-bemoaned "wood appliques" turned out, in my case, to be plastic, once I'd removed the paint. I wonder if these are, too...
I not only had a whole bedroom set in this design, I still have four of the pieces. They work just fine in my vintagey apartment.
I bookmarked an AT post a couple of years ago in which the dresser made an appearance:

I'm sad to see a cousin of my furniture painted white and outfitted with royal blue lucite, but to each their taste.
Very nice choice of hardware.
Well, I did like the flowery accent things, but I can definitely see where they would not work in a lot of houses.
I think it looks great though. I recently painted my sister-in-law's old faux finished faux bamboo bedroom set white and the transformation was amazing. I love what a few coats of white paint can do!
... i dont know... def. wild ... too bold/weird for my liking
Funny how one persons before would be another persons after. ;-)
I too would prefer the before one and had I had the after one I would have done what I could to restore it to that, but taste is so different and it is always inspiring to see what other people are doing.
I'm not into it...I much prefer the "before"....The handles just clash in my opinion with the dressers style...
From real to IKEA repro in one!
Personally, I like everything about the change. But I do think these things might be better appreciated with a picture of the room they are in. Adds some perspective. As one who had the "princess white wood" bedroom set (complete with four poster canopy bed!), growing up, I know what it is to be tired of looking at it as-is. I think this was a great update.
