I discovered this wonderful little project on Merrilee's blog and had to share. With a mesh trash can and a can of gold spray paint you'll be ready to transform one sad little wastebasket into a chic and functional storage bin! I realize this probably sounds like a recipe for disaster, but the outcome is quite stunning.
Involving no more than a fresh coat of paint, this DIY is a fairly simple undertaking. While it is technically a wastebasket, I think the result is too pretty to muddle up with garbage. It looks great as a container for wrapping paper or other arts and crafts supplies. There's something about the warm metallic bin against the cool grey walls that really make this piece pop.

Mom! I figured you were reincarnated SOMEWHERE! (Seriously, my mother was queen of gold spray paint in the 60's and this would be right up her alley.)
I personally don't think making a black mesh container into a gold mesh container makes any difference at all. Both function as neutrals, one or the other might look better in a given environment, but "goldness" doesn't elevate the item, it just alters it slightly.
I agree, SherryBinNH. Must be a slow design day.
My grandmother would have loved this - for my wedding she cut the top off aluminum cans, spray painted them gold, and used them for vases for the tables. Horrified, but love for my grandmother won out, and they adorned our tables.
This project is less creative than my grandmother's, and no less horrifying. SherryBinNH, I agree!
Why are you throwing that wrapping paper away in the golden trash can?
It's not that bad, I think it's quite flattering. I think it adds more interest than the predictable black bin, nice way to add some chic.
I LOVE gold. ;)
Hey I literally own that garbage can!! And YES I will do that too!
That makes for a much more presentable wrapping paper storage holder than the black.
I don't like those for trash bins because you must use trash bags, gunk gets caught in the mesh makes it hard to clean vs a solid material.
I am so doing this, but with magenta metallic paint!

must see those vamped up aluminum cans
what a sweetheart you are
@potpie. That's exactly what I thought!
There's no way to look at that without part of your brain -- the part that recognizes a trash can -- saying wait, why is she throwing away all that wrapping paper.
I think this is funny because I, too, have a trash can full of wrapping paper at home. And I love the gold - it gives it a sort of luxe/modern look.
I don't get it.
i have the same black basket, will keep it as it is. Why spend 4$ for a can of paint for a basket that cost me 2$ at the dollar store?
nice
It’s just a trashcan spray painted. Not that the idea was bad or the outcome was bad, but seriously AT? I imagine there are more interesting things to read about.
(I happen to be a fond lover of all things gold and I like the mix of the gold / grey walls, I’m just saying this post is somewhat of a DUH)
On a slow design day, we need posts that generate a slew of weird comments. That is part of why I love AT.
Not what I want to see on Apt. Therapy.
I actually really like the gold although it's never the colour I pick in the spaypaint aisle.
lol. I knew this entry would provoke these comments.
It is a quick 'duh' makeover but the results are helpful since I have a trash can like that in an undesirable color. I always wondered about the mesh and it gathering paint weird. glad to see it doesn't.
so..uh..thank you for posting. lol.
Cute!
Looking down on my left I can see the exactly same black bin. Tomorrow it will be the same bin, but bright orange. Will it cook me dinner? No, but it's sure gonna look much better than before.
Looks trashy
The only takeaway from this post for me (apart from enjoying the comments) is that pale blue and gold always look awesome together. I knew that, but thanks for the reminder.
Sometimes, it takes a great deal of creativity to find something to write about things that pass for creativity.
Not very inventive, but still a good suggestion. You could paint it whatever color you like, maybe get extra creative and paint stripes using masking tape or some other pattern with a stencil. I like it!
Didn't AT used to have a "nice comments" policy? Sheesh. Me, I like the gold bin, although no need to scorn black trash cans. There's room for every color of trash can in this wide world. Some of us just like them a little more fabulous, that's all!
Haha. Martha Stewart for Michael's wrapping paper. I had the paper with the polka dots on the far left. Fun. Why don't we just have an AT spray painted item of the day post? What will we paint tomorrow, folks?
Slow design day, but you've gotta admit that's gorgeous. :-)
What a complete waste of our ozone!
