Two people. Small house. Small bedroom. Really small closet. What does that mean? Lots of cramming shirts into drawers, chairs overflowing with extra jackets. You get the picture. What can you do to substantially increase bedroom clothes storage?
Even with underbed storage and a decent sized dresser, the options are limited because adding more furniture can make a bedroom feel cramped and unrestful. The clever folks at Young House Love were faced with a bedroom storage deficit. What did they do? Their solution is ingenious, inexpensive and DIY!

They bought two IKEA wardrobes for either side of the bed, hung curtains in front and attached bedside lighting to the wall. And… ta-da! They now have a nice little sleeping nook and a TON of new clothes storage. Very smart and very cozy.

White Enamel Flatwa...
Man oh Man..so simply yet brilliant and it does make the space alot more cozy.
Well done.
Really nifty! But....with no room for bedside tables, where do they stash their books/reading specs/water glasses? Maybe a shelf above the bed and below the window would do the trick.
This does look lovely and cozy, but is there enough room to push the curtains aside so they can access the wardrobes? I'm asking because I would love to try something like this in my bedroom, but am wondering if I'd be frustrated with curtains getting in the way while I'm trying to dress in the morning.
Great idea and very charming space now.
@DINY: Looks like those bedside tables they had before could be turned sideways and fit between the bed and wardrobes.
great idea & looks great.
fabulous perfection! this even makes the very best use of that small and high window. bravo!!
Diny: they answer that question in the comments of the original post on their blog: "We actually keep our bedside stuff (cell phone, alarm clock, jewelry, contact case) inside each of our wardrobes on a shelf that’s around the height of a side table- which is still easily reached from bed. We just slip our hands behind the curtain and grab whatever we need… and it’s easy and clean-looking since it’s all out of sight. Hope it helps!"
Yesssssssssssssssssssss!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am sure if you click over to their site and find the post all your questions would be answered. They are usually super detailed.
I have to give it to them, this was really clever. The real icing on the cake was the header they ran across the span of the room infront of the new 'closets.' It's a night and day difference.
Ahhh! Thanks Elizabeth ll and Designade for pointing out what I missed. That makes sense as a great solution to stashing the stuff!
Does anyone know where that duvet is from? I love it!!
Genius. Absolute genius. And I imagine, TWNT1ANDCOUNTING, you could install those curtain holdbacks (or an old door knob or wooden peg) and just set the curtains to one side as you need to dress or put clothes away or whatever.
I love Young House Love. They are so clever.
That's genius! I'm wondering why they put long curtains on either side of the window behind the bed, though, since they can't be closed (due to the wall-mounted lights). It does extend the look of the outer curtains, but a roman shade would have been functional.
Nicely done! Very clever and attractive to boot.
Love the idea (and YHL). I'm trying to figure out how this would work in our bedroom, which is the 2nd floor of a bungalow, so the walls are straight for only 4 feet and then sloped above that.
Ho. Ly. Crap. This just blew my mind. My girlfriend and I are looking to combine houses and since we both fill all of our individual storage space, we have some concerns. This looks like a marvelously classy way to solve a good chunk of that problem.
We have been planning to do this in our small bedroom! I'm worried about it feeling claustrophobic, though.
Potential impracticalities aside (I'd want to be able to close the curtains over the window, which the lamps disallow), the improvement is approximately, oh, ten bazillion percent. Congratulations on your creativity and perseverance! And thank you so much for sharing!
I believe the duvet is from West Elm but its no longer avail.
I love it. Unfortunately my master bedroom is not laid out similarly, the window is on the left hand side of the bed, and we've got baseboard heat.
mimi2856 - you could do it but you'd have to build something custom to fit the angles in your place
Agree with Annie-O - can't block out Mr. Sun with the curtains due to the lamps being in the way. Some honeycomb or Roman shades would fix that, I think.
Practical and fabulous!
Great Idea!!!!!
An upholstered headboard with the lamps attached would permit the closing of the curtain. Otherwise this is a great solution to add storage.
@RURAL AND RUEFU looks like they can close the window-curtains fine -- just closed, they would be between the wall-lamps rather than on the outside edges. (Wouldn't surprise me if there are four panels, so they can have two between the lamps and two outside them when the curtains are closed)
Looks lovely and layered. What color is your paint?
Just beautiful!
Oh, man...genius!
Nice but not original. I've seen this trick for years.
Very well done, Functional and serene. Excellent work.
What year is this!?
I have done this in one of my bedroom's in the past. For those of you asking about the functionality of the curtains, I used swing arm rods so I could just open the curtains up like a door but they still looked like a regular curtain on a regular rod when closed. This way I could really get in the closet with out the bulky curtains in my way at all. Swing arm curtain rods come in various sizes and finishes. Here's a link to some from Overstock.

this was posted in 2008....? While I think it is a wonderful project and has excellent execution, I am left wondering why Apartment Therapy is posting articles from 4 years ago?
I'm with Nixon27. They have bought an entirely new house and already painted their new master bedroom twice and decorated it 3 times. It is strange to see this content recycled.
This was a popular solution in the UK in the early nineties.
Reminds me of a very tiny hotel room I stayed in in Paris once - storage cubbies on either side of the bed, with double doors rather than curtains. It did feel claustrophobic to sleep in there with my head between the two side panels.
This is how I'd do it, if I did. I wouldn't do full depth wardrobes for hangers, but less deep closets for folded clothing. I would use double doors instead of curtains on the wardrobes. I would separate the wardrobes vertically, such that the lower portion, the same height as the bed, stuck out deeper to provide a little shelf space next to the bed - for temporary use as a nightable - temporary, because you wouldn't be able to open the doors to the top part with tall stuff there on the night shelf - or, you could leave the lower shelf of the top without a door, a cubby there, so you could leave stuff up to a certain height on the nightable and still open the closet doors higher up. I would put drawers below the nightable - easier to access, much like the increased use of kitchen drawers in base cabinets.
To keep from feeling claustrophobic, I'd pull the bed out (hopefully the room is deep enough) so it isn't tucked inbetween the wardrobes. Then I'd put something wood for combined storage (would be great for extra pillows and blankets) and headboard in the empty space (I like a headboard I can lean on). I'd put a flip up lid on it to access the storage space.
I like window blinds to control light - but if you wanted curtains, easy to do if you just attach the lamps to the sides of the wardrobes instead of to the back wall.
We stole this idea for our master bedroom a few years ago and it has been fabulous! Definitely recommend for anyone in a small or no-closeted room. My husband and I each have several drawers in our wardrobes that are handy to stash a book or two in. I keep my water glass on the top of one of the shelves, which is almost-perfect nightstand height! We only have two curtain panels on each - I believe the blog uses more so they look thicker. Using two on each wardrobe has been perfect to look nice and be able to easily push to the sides.
where is the bedding from in the after photo? i love the duvet.
wowwwwwwwwie! simply perfect.
Wow! This is simply amazing how better room looks now.
We have something similar copied from an IKEA showroom (only with Billy bookcases rather than wardrobes).

REALLY?! are you serious? there's a HUGE chance most of us missed this 4 years ago. thanks AT, for an awesome idea (again?)
;)
Great but the long curtains on the high window are just plain silly.
They actually address the window over the bed and the reason for the long curtains in the comments. They used long curtains to balance the window, as it was off centred on the wall, and the sun rises on the other side of their house, so there isn't really an issue with excess light in the morning.
I did love this bedroom transformation 4 years ago though. Their new bedroom is shaping up to be amazing as well (who am I kidding, everything they do is amazing).
Find their newest kitchen remodel as well, it's incredible!
It doesn't matter what year it is.
People still have small spaces, solutions, and some haven't seen this yet.
Myself, I think it is a lovely solution and looks classy.
The window is probably so high up on the outside someone would need a ladder to look in.
What better way to wake up in the morning but with the sun shining in?
Bravo!
I am not bothered when articles are recycled. I would imagine that some people who read AT were 14 years old (or younger) when this was first published. Not a new concept, my house in England had a variation of this in every bedroom. I had zero closets, but the original wall hooks were there from when people had 2 outfits and 1 pair of shoes.
Some ideas are truly timeless.
This project turned put so amazingly!
What was the total cost?
I really like tha way the project was laid out and the honesty about how much time it took to find the perfect details.
Amazing!
