If you live in an older home, you're familiar with Adrienne's struggle with storage — namely, that there isn't any! Her 1930's home is lacking in the closet department, so it was up to her to come up with some creative storage solutions for her four-year-old's room.
She found this old slightly warped and musty armoire at an antique store, and for less than $100 (including the armoire!) she created this fun, playful piece. Her daughter helped her design and plan the artwork, and she even used her handprints as the horses (and the Eiffel Tower side doubles as a growth chart!)
I love the cheerful designs and the bold colors, and the fact that Adrienne's daughter Rose got to be involved in the creative process!
Thanks, Adrienne!

Shaw's Original Fir...
An amazing job. Well done!
For once, I love the after! I usually prefer the before. It is beautiful and charming and Rose is a lucky lucky girl!
Adrienne would make a good kid's book illustrator. this is good w/o being too sweet.
AWESOME!!
Sweet
Wow, I couldn't love this more. Just wonderful (and I agree with @rmbnn!).
I did not see that coming! Super adorable and inspiring.
That's so cute! I'm wondering why the whales are floating above the water, though...
Pi - Whales are mammals. They have to come up for air SOMEtime, right?
Yes, I know they're mammals. That still doesn't explain they they're floating ABOVE the waterline.
Because it's whimsical...?
The whales are dancing. Or levitating with joy.
@ Pi hellooo fantasy...anyway great job, I really live this piece.
This is so sweet! And just a reminder to all parents - please secure furniture against the wall in a child's room, even at age 4, for safety reasons.... (I realize that the after picture isn't taken in the child's room, though.)
Lovely job!
I love it!
OMG! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it!
That is ADORABLE!
Absolutely adorable!
cute!!
Aww. sweet! :)
That is just the cutest thing ever. Saving the photo for future inspiration!
@KatieG1234, if you disliked the piece that much, why did you need to reply at all? Couldn't you have just thought "Not my style" and moved on to another post?
I think it's cute, and a great solution to a kids' room that needs storage.
LOVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Most adorable!
This is so cute. Great job!
I LOVE the height chart on the side. What a wonderful piece, with real memories attached.
YAY! it's not chevron!!! I love it :)
@KatieG1234, You are not alone! But if the kids likes it, that is great. Too many kids rooms are too beautiful these days and overly designed for adults. We need a bit more ugly in the romper room.
I don't get the "hideous" comment. That's the last word I'd think to use to describe the armoire. To me, it's adorably whimsical.
As for the whales, they're jumping for joy, goddamnit!
Nifty! Interesting shaped piece, too.
Very cute! I see it being updated with some trim and glossy paint and a crystal knob when she hits her teens, too.
"Hideous" is actually the precise aesthetic I was aiming for, so at least a few of you got it. Thanks for not noting my manky dishes in the background. Actually, I'm pretty floored by the feedback. I have posted a few things before, but I'm overwhelmed by the comments on this armoire. To clarify, a few things:
1. the armoire is fastened to a stud in her room
2. my daughter did help with the painting and she decided on all of the things to be included (including some leaping whales).
3. at some point, she will think it's ridiculous, too, but for now we both like the stories we tell by looking at it
My mother has nagged me since childhood to illustrate a children's book, and these comments have made me feel like I actually just might finally make that draft.
It's just perfect! I am in love with this. I loved the original because of the shape but this just makes it like a piece of art!
She took a ratty old run of the mill armoire, and made it into something magical.Id bet good money 40 years from now that little girl will remember this piece fondly.
Knowing AT this has probably been answered somewhere else but, the post mentions that the armoire was "musty". If that was an accurate description how did you solve that issue?
Also, my favorite side is with the Eiffel Tower (not just 'cause I want to go to Paris!) I love penmanship and the up and up and up!
Overall? Delightful transformation. Naysayers almost always are looking for attention.
I love "the" penmanship! Oops!
Adrienne, that is fantastic (and I mean that in every sense of the word). I love it, floating whales, hand horses, and all. Almost makes me want to have a child. Almost.
Thank you for the very kind comment. My daughter, Rose, likes to say she's "growing up and up and up for the roller coaster." I cleaned it with Mrs. Meyer's Lemon cleaner, aired it out, and then painted it. Covering it with a fresh coat of paint really helped.
So refreshing to see something on here that isn't designed to death. Obviously not "my style" since I'm not a kid (classy of you to point it out in such a tacky way, @KatieG1234), but still way cute for kids. And the fact that it is a bit of a blank-slate and ready to be repainted when she outgrows it is really handy! Hopefully it ages with her, maybe when she is in her 20s it will still be with her, painted up a bit chic.
Also, those handprint horses are GREAT.
Outstanding! *gives this a standing ovation*
Sometimes these sort of makeovers add too much or must think highly of the art factor in the design when I think the art needs a bit of help. This is perfection.
i wold love to have this even as an "ADULT"!!!!!!! well done!
Did AT delete the comment from KatieG1234? I am intrigued and want to read her smug and tacky comment! Obviously it is not one shared by most everyone else. You did an amazing job. Lucky little girl!
This is a design success for all the right reasons. One, it fulfills it's objective- it is functional for its intended uses and the appearance is pleasing and appropriate for the 'client' (Rosie) who closely worked with the designer (Mom) and her feedback was attended to. Two, it is personable and noteworthy- it cannot be dismissed- it is art. Three, it shows the individual skills of a talented and dedicated artist whose works are anticipated by an admiring audience with confidence in her future endeavors. Thank you for sharing and inspiring!
Nanobelle, you are darling (and did my mom put you up to that post?). Lenabug, I was wondering the same thing myself! She simply said the piece was "hideous" and I can appreciate that. The comment was an opinion, not in any way rude or demeaning. I actually love that people can express their true feelings about anything posted on AT, good, bad or snarky. This is a site for ideas, feedback, and conversation, not just a page for compliments.
I agree Adriennella. I always appreciate reading everyone's opinion. Shame about the censorship.
What a lucky girl to have such a fun piece in her room.
