I can't begin to tell you how many times I've come across a beautiful chair that has busted caning. Even if caning is not your style, it still feels like there's something you should be able to do. Sure enough there is. This chair has a whole new vibe, want to see what it looks like today?
Mandi over at Vintage Revivals was lucky enough to do an entire diy room makeover for one of her readers and the results are nothing short of fabulous. The budget was low and there's a large amount of creativity happening in the final look.
In the midst of this crazy makeover was this chair. Once with blue upholstery and sad, broken caning, it was sure to live out its life at the thrift store for some time. That is, until Mandi saw the chair. A coat of paint and some jute upholstery webbing later and she has a brand new look that is seriously photo worthy.

Love it! And I actually love that shade of green; it's a nice pop of color.
Love the webbing! Great alteranative and the green is lovely.
The chair looks a lot better in the link, when shown with the rest of the room. The green fits a lot better when you see it's pulling a room together. Pretty great transformation. I really need that rug from IKEA she used! Ah if only IKEA was closer.
I have wondered about fixing chairs with broken caning before and this inspires me! wonderful job!
I like both pictures.
love it!! SO glad this wasn't slapped with a coat of white paint...
how brilliant! I love the shade of green with the new webbing.
love
Aaaaand now I'm buying that wall stencil...
I have chair similar to this but older looking. I recently stripped it, painted it matte black, distressed it and then had the seat upholstered in sheepskin. It looks amazing. The caning remained intact and then the back of the chair just has a linen distressed black fabric. Looks fantastic!
Definitely a great makeover...
...and LOOK! They didn't paint that lovely vintage brass table lamp!
Nice! I have the opposite problem. Very similar chair - caning is pristine, but my dog chewed the legs :(
I will reupholster it somehow (the cushion/back is gross, though in good shape) but not sure what to do about the dog chew marks.
LOVE the green!
We have those chairs ("before" version). I'm so inspired to fix them up now!
Tricky!! What a good idea for damaged cane!
Tpascorp; wood epoxy can fix those chew marks. I just used a product called P.C. Woody to rebuild a chipped off corner of a chair.
Nifty, wish they had photos without the pillow too!
Love the way you took a well made chair from yesterday and made it so relevant for today. This could be a vintage Hickory Chair Company chair, made from fine mahogany, in Hickory, North Carolina. Cane does not last as long as the chair. What a great solution! www.hickorychair.com
I have that EXACT same chair but it's in pristine condition so I'm not touching it...maybe if my cats get to it. Looks great!
Aw, I have this chair in apple green! Mine's in perfect condition or else I would seriously contemplate this rehab...
Oh, that's NICE!
Genius!
The whole room is pretty amazing. I'll need to get more details on this giveaway (seriously?!?!?), especially if there's going to be another! :O
This is the best make-over of this style of chair I have seen yet! Great job!
that's great! I love the wall, too.
Love this!!!
The whole makeover of the room is amazing!
Wait, 30 comments and no one is complaining about painting wood? Ruining the integrity of the chair? I must have stumbled on an alternate universe...
Love the chair.
Now this is just fabulous. More than that it's just interesting to look at and beautifully unexpected.
wow !
