I'll admit that there are some items that don't really register in my mind when it comes to holiday decor. They're either not quite my style or so ubiquitous that they're off my decorating radar. A paper mache gold deer is probably just such an item, but it might be worth a second look after this creative idea…
Over at Remodelaholic this pair of Christmas deer has suffered a slow and painful death. Danielle purchased these deer for $9 and took them to the hardware store. The hardware store? That's right they took a road trip!
The pair of deer was taken to the tool rental center where she had their heads chopped off. She then painted the heads white and mounted them to wooden plaques where they make adorable and modestly sized taxidermy heads.
It's a fun project that might have you looking at less than attractive decor as something special and having the possibility to be something greater. Check out more details over at Remodelaholic.

So very smart and creative! amazing!!
Ha! Wasn't expecting that after!
What'd she do with the bodies? Cook them in a stew? lol
Love the artwork on the walls! Oh...wait... ;-P
Nice! Kind of a tease not to show us the artwork that will go in those Ribba frames though. I love Ribba frames!
Awesome
LOL! I saw this on homepodge yesterday. Too stinkin' clever!!
Cute! I'm not really into doing the whole heads-on-a-wall thing, but this is one of the better versions of it I've seen. They're not quite as intimidating as the life size versions and in white they seem more like sculpture than taxidermy. Nice job! :)
genius!
Nice frames. Don't they come in white?
fabulous!
What is all this decorator-chic about heads on walls? "It's so cute, we're pretending we killed and decapitated animals - but we didn't really." If you think deer are cute, fine, buy model deer. But how does it improve a pretend animal to pretend execute it?
Cute!
Should I still wear camp if I'm pretending to kill and decapitate a paper macho deer? Or can I just pretend I'm wearing it?
I like how creative this is.
That said I still can't bring myself to put anything that looks like taxidermy (mock, spraypainted or what have you) on the wall. I dunno. Just my gut saying "... no..."
I do have two old wall ceramic hooks that are bull heads, so maybe I'm being hypocritical.
I'm over the dead animal fashion.
I expect the animals are, too.
These would make awesome entry way hooks to catch hats, scarves, etc.
I'm not a fan of the taxidermy look myself, but this is really clever!
What an absolutely brilliant idea!
She should mount their bodies on the other side of the wall!
am i the only one who liked the deer better in gold (and with a full body attached)?
haha I actually made one of those last year! his name is Augustus and he hangs in my kitchen. I love it :)
love this!!
Not a fan of heads of any kind on the wall, nor of pelts as rugs. However, points for repurposing, I guess.
