Not all mid century fiberglass chairs are created equal. Some aren't made by a big name designer and are literally just plain old chairs. So what do you do when you come across one that's looking a little run down? Click through to find out:
We stopped in over at Aesthetic Outburst, where there's been a recent chair makeover. They were in need of something with a little pop and thus the chair was painted gold and given a bit of red to round things out. In this case, the project was inpired by a gold-leaf version of a classic chair by that's packed with personality.
While this makeover didn't involve any unusual techniques, it is a great reminder that not everything that is old is too precious to reinvent and to bring into your home what you love. You can find more on the makeover over at Aesthetic Outburst.

Yeah! It's nice to see someone not taking their chair too seriously.
Klaatu barada nikto! I love it!
Sweet!
Where cn I get new "shoes" for the "feet" of an Eames chair like that? pls email me vol@aol.com.
chair "feet" are available in black or white at any ACE HARDWARE store in the Midwest.
I am a great believer that paint can solve anything. I love it!
Wow! I wish I had seen that before I got rid of a bunch of those that needed a makeover!
Great Job!!!!! Sunshine in a can. Lol!!!!!
Wow!
I guess I'm the sole detractor. I think it's okay, but am kind of tired of people spray painting things gold and deeming them "fabulous!" Sparkly doesn't necessarily equate to excellence.
Cool! I recently "inherited" a set of 4 clear acrylic tulip chairs (similar to the above chair, but with the flanged base) that have seen better days. Despite general craftiness, I've been at a loss when it comes to restoring them. Would simple upholstery work with these guys?
Absolutely horrible. A little wet sanding and Penetrol would of saved this chair.
If you're going to leave nasty comments like "Absolutely horrible," at least do so while using proper grammar. "Would of?" Seriously?
I would like to know what kind of paint was used to do this job- I am hoping to do something similar with different coloured paints.
Mindy PDX- I have four chairs in a similar state and we tried wet sanding and penetrol without any luck. "Saved" is a bit of subjective term in this case because obviously the owner of the chair was looking for a different form of redemption than yourself.
Nice work on being brave and up-cycling something that makes you happy!
if this is an original Eames chair, I hate to see its value go out the window because of the paint job. Here in NYC they go for $400 a chair even banged up. But then again, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and - if you'd rather live with this pc in metallic, I say go for it. It looks rather lovely cleaned up with paint. I think the Eames themselves would even approve.
I agree with Mindy PDX. What a travesty not to sand and use whatever is used to restore to near original condition. I have a shell chair that could use restoring but I would never paint it gold & red; however, paint restoration works on some things but not this chair.
I think I would have padded it with foam and made a cover for it.
