This summer, Gail and Dan, two charter school educators living on Maui, were given the opportunity to move from a cottage of less than 450 square feet into a much larger, multi-level home nearby. When they made the move, their meager furniture collection simply could not fill the new house. On the initial to-do list: fix an ailing dresser and beautify an old desk.
Gail, who has a love of both power tools and do-it-yourself creativity (as evidenced on her delicious blog, Cooking at the Pacific Outpost), embraced the opportunity to take on some furniture projects.

The low dresser is a charming old piece that the couple bought for $15 from a yard sale. This one took some elbow grease: they painstakingly power-sanded off all of the paint (yellow, brown, and bright orange were among its past lives), and found a nice wood base to work with. Gail coated the top, sides, and feet of the dresser with three layers of stain, and the drawers with a coat of primer and three coats of high-gloss white paint. She then applied polyurethane to the whole dresser. The final touch was replacing the old hardware with drawer pulls from Ikea.
Next came the much-needed desk, which was purchased used for $10 and the top of which is actually particleboard. After a light sand, Gail followed a similar recipe: she coated the sides, top, and spindle legs with one coat of primer and three coats of high-gloss white paint, and stained the drawers. Then came the layer of polyurethane and new drawer pulls.
End result? Two updated pieces of furniture done on the cheap. And ... Gail's love of power tools is as strong as ever.

that dresser is FANTASTIC!
I want to live on Maui!!
The desk is very cute! It definitely gives me ideas for one of the desks in my office.
i love the dresser.
Go Gail! I adore the look of high-gloss white and dark stained wood together. Lovely!
nice!!!
I love the dresser and the desk! Gail kicks ass with power tools!
Dresser, yes. Desk, no.
Super cool! What talent. Come do some of my furniture. Love the dresser and desk!
Your dresser refinish is so inspiring. I have a dresser that I've been putting off refinishing forever - I can't decide how to paint it! - and your work has got me fired up :)
Both yeses. I wonder if she considered keeping the pulls from the dresser? It would add a detail to the now-modern dresser to tie it in with the now-modern desk (that still has slightly ornate legs). Well, who knows if they're in the same room....
How did you get all of those layers of paint off, Gail? You amazing! I like the shine, how many coats of polyurethane did you use? Impressive restoration work.
Even in the before, you can see that the dresser has a really cool shape. But, Gail made it absolutely beautiful. Nice!
I love it. I did the same with my dresser, and I messed up the paint on the drawers so now I have to redo every over again, including sanding. Which I'm dreading because it was such a pain, and I live in a condo. Do yu have any ideas of where/how I can get some sanding done?
What's the class favorite for gloss-white spray paint?? I just bought a sideboard for $30 that has some wood damage, am thinking of painting certain parts of it to obscure the repair-work.
Kona stain, quelle apropos!
I had to do a double - triple take to confirm in my head that that was in fact, the same dresser!! Gorgeous Work, Gail.
