Some room makeovers just make you say, "wow." This is one of them. The room started with dingy avocado green walls, an outdated chandelier and curtains, and a floor in need of some serious love. You'll be shocked at what they were able to do in only 3 weeks!

Abbey from Aesthetic Outburst and her husband are the masters behind this spectacular renovation. They're both artists, and you can definitely see it in their well-curated collection of largely reclaimed and vintage decor. Check out the full post and see, among other things, a close-up of Abbey's clever way to display her pressed penny collection (pictured below left).

Commercial Flour Sa...
wow-- that space was seriously scary before the reno.
Call me goth, but I actually loved the patina of the green walls and worn floors. Though lovely redo, it really is much brighter and cleaner.
...And I adore the new hanging light!!
Um, they painted everything white, waxed the floor, and hung a light...hardly shocking. I'd say they spent more time ripping out that kitchen linoleum...I would have recommended a full refinish on the floors, painting the radiator, and more appropriately scaled furniture. A big improvement nonetheless.
wow - love the transformation and how you kept certain things as is. I think the radiator and the floors look great, and while I hear a few people bemoaning the white washing - i feel the other items in the room bring color into the space best.
being a cozy-crafter at heart, you may want to eventually make a little kilim window seat cushion thingy for rainy days when you're curled up with a cup of tea and the ny times!
I almost like the before better. However, I think the walls should be painted to something a little fresher, I just don't know if I like the white there. Really nice improvement though and I like the rug a lot :)
i like the before better. very romantic. the floors look great, though.
I love a clean slate that retains the wood floors and window moldings!! Much nicer than dirty and dingy (I'm sure the "before" was worse than the pictures can show).
However, I would test the radiator for lead paint. I see a highchair, so there's probably a child around. Most home improvement stores have cheap tests. If lead is found, the radiator can be re-painted (without sanding - no need to get the lead everywhere) with radiator-specific paint.
Good job!
I'm with lynell, I liked the patina of the before. But I also like the freshness of the after!
Thanks everyone! We've owned the house for 3 weeks, so this is the first room that's presentable. We've since hung artwork and are working on a cushion for the window seat. It's getting there.
@Keygirlus- we DID do a full refinish on all of the floors in the house and are in the process of re-painting the radiators.
@wseattlemom- thank you for your suggestions! We did test for lead and are working on painting the radiators with heat-resistant paint.
By far I prefer the before. It reminded me of a french apartment and I would have worked with it. The after is clean and bright buy boring!
Kind agree with lynell, the before had an appeal to it. The after is nice too but not "gorgeous", that was a total oversell. The floors look good after. I like the before chandelier way better, especially with some Edison bulbs, but that's just the steampunk in me.
@Home Fancy - As the writer, I really *do* think it's gorgeous. One person's gorgeous, is another person's boring is another person's fresh and clean is another person's sterile. Plus, how many of us could bust all that out in three weeks with two kiddos running around?
I sincerely can't understand anyone liking the "before" better - it was dark, dingy, and sad. The only worthwhile bits (the floors, the radiator, and those gorgeous window frames) have been lovingly (and energetically: 3 weeks!) retained, and the whole room is simply gorgeous!
And I LOVE that rug!
I think the "before" did have a certain romantic, old-world feel, but was also way too dark for everyday living. The white does a good job of highlighting all the architectural details and reflects a lot more light. (Although personally, I would have liked a little hint of color there.) It is a beautiful room, though, and good job on the redo!
I love it. Nice work!
I am just wondering about window coverings... I can't tell from the picture whether there is sheer fabric or something to give some privacy, especially since kitchen is viewable from the windows. Like this, though. Light and airy room.
