Hutches are weird things. They take up a great deal of space, and although they display your collectibles well, unless the vibe of the piece really fits your home, they feel monolithic and out of place. So when Brooke's friend passed along a hutch from her Grandmother, she set out to make it her own and all we have to say is, "Wow!"

Brooke over at The Crafting Chicks really did a bang up job on this transformation. The end result is a complete 180 from where it started and we mean that in a good way!
She used a few coats of red primer before starting and then coated it in a high gloss red. To tone the piece down a bit she used a stain over the top and wiped it back off for that slightly rustic feel without being over the top country crafty. The final touch is the fabric she mounted on the back panel of the piece and the hardware she painted and re-mounted upside down!
The arching of the hardware matches perfectly with the lines and it doesn't feel nearly as heavy or out of place as the original piece did. It's a fabulous transformation that serves as a great reminder to not be scared of big items. They need some secondhand love, too. All it takes is a little patience.

Shaw's Original Fir...
I want it!
gorgeous!
it is beautiful but the fabric inside is bothering me. I would paint the inside in a bright turquoise and then fill with china pieces...
Great job! I'm glad it still has a somewhat traditional look with the red paint.
I'm with Anusha73 - not sure the fabric works. Maybe depending on the rest of the room. My first thought was chinoiserie, second thought was a pretty textured linen.
WOW! *love*
I think this fabric choice works well. At first glance I actually thought the inside was painted white and that she had applied a wire screen to the back of the glass.
Gorgeous! I've been wanting to paint my great uncle's old chest, and this has inspired me.
what a beautiful transformation....inspiring!
Absolutely beautiful!!
