Tess from Cozy Little Cave DIY'd her way to a fabulous guest bed for her spare room: I recently re-finshed an old vintage bed frame I scored on Craigslist for a steal. The finish wasn't in spectacular condition and it was really the shape I was interested in, so I decided to paint…
…I was a little worried about my bold color choice (although that's nothing new for me), but I'm thrilled with how it turned out! I feel like it looks so much more high end now and has personality galore!

Definitely fab. Good work.
While I might not have chosen these colors, you can really see what a great shape the bed is now. Great job. Looks so much better than the dark stain.
as always, much preferred the before
Before was better -
- and all that Yellow in a bedroom is just a bad idea: Expect agitated guests.
wow, you did a great job - and I agree, I love the shape of the bed as well!
but what I really adore is the quilt on your wall! fabulous!
yes, loved the before bed.
She said the finish wasn't in good condition, otherwise the bed probably would have been more expensive, and if painted would have lost value, but the transformation I think is wonderful. I just painted our old dresser in this same color scheme, yellow with creamy white drawers, and it looks fantastic. I agree with her, this color combo on furniture looks high end and designer.
Yeah, the before was much better. The old wood bed placed in front of the quilt had a simple, graphic punch. And the painting added just the right amount of mod.
The new yellow is just too intense, and also the duvet is too much pattern. You need a simple duvet here to help calm this space.
Also, yellow in a bedroom is best restricted to small doses -- it is recognized as an anxiety producing color.
Nooooo..... That poor lovely bed! It looked so much nicer in its original form, and went so well with that quilt on the wall, too! Sigh.
Well, it looks just fabulous and if Tess is happy that is what really matters, but it always breaks my heart a little to see someone paint over beautiful wood like that. I may have done the work of sanding and then stained a lighter color. Maybe.
I love antiques, and it always breaks my heart when people paint them.
So what if the finish isn't great? That's part of what gives the piece its charm. It's been loved, used and maybe abused. But it mattered enough to someone for him/her to keep it around.
I really love the quilt and painting (the one on the wall; the one on the floor creeps me out a little).
Hi guys- I knew I'd ruffle some feathers with this one ;)
As per ruining the wood- the finish was NOT in good condition at all- although the photos don't convey it. We wanted a cheap, bright, fun bed for our guest room (eventually kids room), so we purposely bought with that in mind. We specifically found a piece we would be ok with painting. I grew up in a house full of beautiful dark-wood antiques... and this was nowhere near that level. I know some people disagree with altering old furniture, but we wanted to make it work for us- and we don't plan on ever getting rid of it! :)
As per the yellow, it might not be the most calming, but I love bright, overwhelming color & just love how it energizes the room. Our guests usually expect such things from me... ;)
The yellow might some day get changed out, but for now, we love it!
While I prefer the before, I like the idea of a cheery guestroom (...or a guest room at all in my case).
It's a shame you can't find old beds like that in queen or king sizes - thus they are usually only good for guest rooms! Great find, great transformation!
I love it. I love the shape of the bed, and I think it looks great with the vibrant color. I just like the room in general--it looks fun and cozy. Good job!
babyfishmouth, tell me about it--oh, how I wish antique beds came in sizes larger than full. What I've ended up doing in our master bedroom and guest room is getting an antique dresser set, and a new bed which doesn't match of course, but coordinates well enough. Some of my guests are pretty tall, and feel cramped even in the queen bed we have--no way I could put them in a full. I will be looking for antique twin and full beds for kids' rooms, though!
i think it's gorgeous
Great job!
I like how the paint brings out the shape of the bed, but find the yellow in it to be too much, especially with the other strong colors and graphic elements in the room. It would put me on edge if I had to stay there.
I am in the camp that the bed looked better before. I also understand that it while it might have had great lines, it wasn't in the best condition. What I can't get on board with is that sour lemon yellow. It hurts my eyes to look at it and I don't find this bedroom serene in the least. It literally made me pucker. I like color too, but not this one.
For those who don't find this serene, or would have preferred a different color... how luckily for you!!! It's not your bedroom!

After lightly sanding & priming, I used Behr Semi-Gloss Enamel (regular latex, though, not a real oil-based enamel).
I like it!!!
I think it's great. Furniture should be enjoyed, not treasured.
I love the white and yellow on the bed, though personally I'd pair it with a gray wall and more subdued bedding to give the room a calm, modern look. I love the tree trunk nightstand, too.
It looks so good!
oooh HollyCow, I love the grey wall idea!! It sounds so lovely! For now the quilt has to stay there though (an heirloom- and the only possible place it'll fit in the house), but I'm totally filing that idea away for the future!
@ zoee: I don't know about that. I can see yellow stimulating brain activity, but calming anxiety notsomuch. I get very anxious in yellow rooms, sometimes resulting in a headache. I'm just speaking from my own experience- it might affect others differently.
But I do like it in small doses, like in this lovely bed transformation. And hey, maybe a more anxiety-inducing color is perfect for a guest room- the guests won't stay way too long! :)
Makes me happy!!!
i love what you have done with the bed! it's fun and unexpected. the room looks great in general. i would however, use different bedding. maybe solid white duvet and some bright pillows...
I absolutely love the colours - the yellow is so sunny and happy. I miss having furniture that colour in my own room. It looks amazing with that quilt too!
I think I would have preferred a single color, rather than the yellow and white combined. There's just too much going on in that room now between the wall hanging, the artwork, the bed linens, etc. You can't really appreciate the beautiful bones of the room itself--the woodwork of the windows, the closet doors, and the wood floors.
Thanks for the suggestions guys! I do plan on eventually changing out the bedding (I agree a simpler set would be better) and re-considering the walls (except the quilt)- great suggestions! We just bought our house about 6 months ago, and being just out of school, we can't get it all done immediately, but we'll get there eventually! :)
I like it and that quilt is gorgeous.
Wish you were in NYC. Another room I'd love to style!
White ironstone pitcher of daffodils... the yellow portrait on the wall where the painting is now....
I just plopped down some money for a yellow duvet cover, so I'm hoping it cheers me up like this bed! Lovely! I always hate furniture I paint...I can never get the finish to look right. What kind of paint did you use?
Sorry...just saw on your blog it was semi gloss!
i like the bed, even painted, but the quilt behind it distracts from it. Just too much.
I like the bed before AND after. Before, it looks like a quirky flea market find. (I'm assuming, from your description, that it was never going to look like an expensive antique heirloom, no matter what you did to it.) After, it looks bold, artistic, and unique. I actually love it with the quilt behind it, and the little log night table. I also love those gorgeous wood closet doors! Are they as fabulous in real life as they are in the photos? The whole room comes together really well, even the bedding. You just need one cool little throw pillow to top it off. Maybe a multi-colored crocheted square? Or something graphic and funky from Urban Outfitters? I wish I could see an after-after photo.
Definitely prefer the before. I love painted wood, but this just doesn't seem to be a good fit.
i LOVE it. esp. with the tree trunk nightstand, the yellow painting, and the suitcase. ditch the rest of the stuff and you've got one freakin' incredible room.
I don't mind painting the bed but the yellow looks garish
I LOVE it! I love the way it curves at the foot. Great job.
I loved the before! I would never have painted it.... but even if I had, I would have chosen a more serene color. I could see it looking nice a light blue. But, "In matters of taste, there is no dispute."
The bed knocks my socks off!
The quilt caught my eye right away...love it! Now that it's painted, the beauty of paint is that it easily can be changed. Personally, I would have gone with a more subdued color.
I have gorgeous quilt tucked away in linen closet. How did you hang the quilt?
hurricaneKate- if you do a quick google search you can find lots of instructions, but it's basically a sleeve stitched to the back of the quilt. You then slide a piece of wood through the sleeve and mount it from that. You can vary it however needed to fit your quilt/wall. :)
Tragic
With my limited "skills", I suspect I will be well retired by the time I see said quilt on the wall!
You were brave to paint the bed that color but it really looks great. Wonder what mirror would look like in place of the picture on the wall?
One instance when I preferred the before; however, the yellow isn't half-bad.
Maybe the yellow self-portrait next to it is a teensy bit bad. Sorry, sorry - I can completely relate when it comes to decorating a new house. One thing at a time.
I, too, am digging the grey wall idea.
It's pretty ugly, but oh well. The bed wasn't any valuable antique and while the colors aren't to my taste, the owner thinks she did a great job, and that's what counts.
That's exactly what counts.
But make sure she knows YOU think it's ugly! Yay! :P
Feel better now?
Have we ever had the pleasure of seeing your own abode, FMF?
Love, love, love it!!!
I'm really into "egg" at the moment... (what I call the white and yellow combo) you should see my tiling.... my friends don't like it but I love it.
The bed and the quilt look amazing. The rest you need to curate.
I think the bed looks great. While I wouldn't paint a valuable antique, I see nothing wrong with painting one that's not so valuable especially if it's not in such great shape. Paint gives it new life.
Same for tired cabinets and paneling that often never get painted only because they're wood. Ugly and dated is still ugly and dated, even if it's wood! Get out that paint brush!
i agree with Idcinlb. maybe i would have chosen different colors myself, but i love to see a renewed piece of furniture that looks so--custom! and the quilt idea is adorable--not a new one, but to see it displayed is great inspiration! i think a muted color on the wall and a very basic area rug would make this space even cozier (just as the neutral color/natural element of the log as a bed stand helped to anchor the furious color scheme).
Sorry, the After seems totally unwarranted to me. The Before was lovely in its own modest way (even if it's not a valuable antique). In fact, I would love to have had that bed. Now it's ruined to me.
Even if you had to paint it, it should've been done in a semi-glossy cream or a mild buttery yellow or an elegant bluish gray. That would've still been acceptable.
This is atrocious.
"Acceptable"? Seriously???
FAILED
Normally I would be horrified to paint this beautiful wood, but I LOVE this bed. Yellow and white! Inspired. And a beautiful job. Well done!
I really like the bed in the bright yellow and white, just not with the lovely quilt behind it. Do you have another wall where the quilt could go? Then maybe you could use the yellow woman as a foundation to start a wall of art behind the bed. The other colorful painting seems to unbalance the aesthetic a bit. With the quilt, linens, and that picture, all in the same corner, it tips over a bit, so to speak. Love the bed and the sweet linings. They are my favorite part of the room.
I love it! It looks really cute painted - light and fun, whereas before it looks all serious and heavy.
I have a similar bed that I purchased a while ago but had a few questions on the set-up. I saw that you put some slats down the middle, what size did you use? Have you used the bed and is it sturdy? I'm assuming you're using just a regular full-sized mattress?
The bed was fug before but now its fabulous. I don't see the point in preserving something when its old when it could go from uck to awesome. And the yellow and white are cheery and make me happy!
sarrazak- the bed used to just have a few slats & was used with a mattress & box spring, but we didn't have a box spring to go with this mattress (it had been on a platform bed). So, we just used a whole lot more slats (one every few inches - similar to Ikea slatted bases) comparable in size to what the frame came with. The mattress is right on that & is plenty sturdy. You could probably use plywood if you wanted too- probably don't need anything else at all if you are using a box spring though.
As a person who has painted every single piece of wooden furniture that has ever passed through my front door, I love it. Paint can add so much character and is so easy to change rather than buying all new pieces. Good job!
Patrick (the other one), you rock! I'm so sick of the mean comments people leave on all these posts, that I've almost stopped looking. I realize I may be overly sensitive, but people can be so rude when they can hide behind the anonymity of a computer screen. My rant being over, I have a question that I'd love for AT or AT readers to explain to me...when is it okay to paint furniture and when isn't it? I'm too afraid to paint wood for fear of ruining it. My kids have cedar dressers. Would I be ruining them if I painted them? I think they're rather ugly.
The bed and the quilt are great together.
What is with all the haters? What do they think they will accomplish?
Love it love the colour! Also love the bed quilt combo- well done. Keep to your individual desires the world is already too brown! :)
