Jae sent us an email about an amazing DIY renovation of her bedroom. Using MDF, paint and just a smidge over $100, she now has a whole new look with tons of architectural detail. Check it out:

Jae writes: Writeup: I wanted to lighten up our bedroom but still keep it calming and relaxing. Most of the transformation was done with paint but we did add a board & batten accent wall for a large impact. This was a relatively inexpensive update. I walked out of Lowe's with a receipt for $102. That included 2 gallons of paint, the MDF ($24 for the board), the two trim pieces, and a few miscellaneous items (painters blue tape, a small jar of oops paint, etc). Next up (besides more painting) - art & mirrors.

White Enamel Four-P...
......and a new bed, and new bedding, and new lamps, and new window treatments.......
It's an awesome transformation, but the $100 price tag is a bit misleading.
Beautiful. Love the panel detail. So simple. So stunning.
FANTASTIC! I LOVE the sidetable with the long table cloth. It looks like a beautiful hotel getaway.
Good point, Creative License.
Maybe she already had the stuff in different rooms?
Maybe.. KATILA
But..
This is ridiculously misleading! She did not renovate her bedroom for a smidge over $100. She renovated her entire bedroom and one - admittedly, great - FEATURE of said bedroom was a smidge over $100.
For anyone else to accomplish such an amazing before and after, they would have to have a smidge over $100 for this FEATURE, plus an additional $1,000+ (conservative estimate) for a new bed, lamps, curtains, bedding, rug, and other accessories. OR, have $1,000+ worth of these items somewhere in their house they're not using.
I think this is a great idea and does show how a little money can make a big impact, but the presentation as a bedroom makeover takes away from that.
They look like the same lamps to me, just with repainted basket shades and a paper accent.
Thank you Creative License..you took the words right out of my mouth. While the paint and trim cost only $102 the new bed, tables, lamps, bedding etc. looks like it cost a whole lot more. Either way..still very very beautiful..the owner did exactly what she wanted kept it calm and relaxing yet bright and cheery. Good job!
I like it ... but shouldn't it go around the whole room?
Or, if it's just on one feature wall, all the way to the ceiling?
It feels a little incomplete to me.
But definitely a big improvement!
On her blog, the before picture shows the final bed.
If you check out the original blog post, there's a "more recent" Before pic when they purchased a new bed in November. Either she submitted or AT pulled the most distant Before image, for maximum impact. I'm not entirely sure how about that, it is awfully misleading in context.
It is a big improvement though, especially in terms of color scheme. That room was far too small with much too low of a ceiling for a four poster bed. It looks much larger and very serene. And she even kept that handsome inlay 3 drawer piece! It's such a relief to see a renovation that doesn't entirely toss out anything with charm and replace it with generic on-trend minimalist pieces.
Skirted tables always make me think of hotels and conferences though.
With such pretty walls, it's a shame to hide them or distract from them with such a massive and dark bed frame.
Yeah, this $102 headline really bothers me. The bed, bedding, lamps (the before picture had wooden bases) are new, and this did not cost $102. It's not honest.
I agree about the paneling going around the room... it looks a bit incomplete. It looks great though (all that's left to do now is a new ceiling fan ;))
That is one seriously dramatic improvement, and while the 'before' shot was taken before the separate furniture upgrades, I can understand the appeal of using it -- the four-poster/ceiling fan intersection must have been driving them nuts.
Paint colors? It seems that the editora at AT over exaggerate these makeovers all the time. This was a wall makeover for $102. And may I suggest that you add a horizontal trim piece in the corner so the wall looks finished?
editors not editora
Loving the paint color! Very soothing.
they are talking about the board and batten! not the whole room costing $100 to make over. I guess that's what happens when you read the majority of an article.
$1000?
Not likely!
The French marquetry bombé chest of drawers with gilt accents and a marble top -- that alone is several thousands of dollars.
Let's be honest -- it is not the board and batten which makes the room. I am struggling to see how it relates to anything in the room actually. No, it is the change of colours, of lighting, of bedding and of furniture. The "after" would still look fantastic without the board and batten, and if the furniture, bedding and colours were not changed out, the board and batten wouldn't make the room look better.
$101 at DYI store and 2 grand at the furniture store. Really misleading. Do like the batten look.
I have a bed much like the four poster in the before. I also have brown walls. I clicked on this post to see how I can update my room (as I am so over my bed and the room color). Turns out what I need to do is buy a new bed. Good news and bad news.
Editrix if you want the female singular, not editora.
Very nicely done however agreed that this headline is indeed misleading. Much like this one of a short while ago (a garage, that, in reality, was not a before and after but had simply been re-built):

There's no need for AT to "sensationalize" these stories. Please just tell it like the way it really is.
I love board+batten (am thinking of doing it for the outside of my house) BUT, as others have said, its craftsman-style look doesn't gibe well with the current mix of furnishings in the room. Still, good job.
I hope her next project is to get rid of that horrid fan. Love the chest of drawers, though.
I didn't find this headline misleading AT ALL. It seems pretty obvious to me that the "project" they are focusing on is the paneling behind the bed, which is the "Board and Batten" referred to in the headline. That's also what they give the price breakdown for, so no confusion here.
I like the project and I think it's a huge improvement on the room. I'm not sure I love the bed style with the craftsman molding, but it looks warm and much fresher and up to date.
Very nice! Much more "seaside chic" with these inexpensive and stylish updates. I might replace the dark curtains with white, update the fan with a schoolhouse style. And get rid of that big TV that hogs up so much space at the end of the bed. But those are more expensive updates that will happen in time.
Yeah this doesn't make any sense to me. Everything is different. AT - what are you doing?
I love the wall treatment and the color palette used in the room. Great job!
the board and batten wall seems out of scale with the room...and a little incomplete...but better than "before"...I guess.
The feature wall draws the eye away from the monolithic bed, making it appeal smaller scale in the room. Very clever!
The four poster combined with the ceiling fan made the the bed feel like a cage. The new bed is a vast improvement.
Interesting. I love board and batten but this seems to go too high up? Something about it looks "off" to me. And the light and airy feel of the wall color and the board and batten does not go with that dark, heavy looking bed.
To Star Princess: do you mean Vertical trim piece?
