The red and white tile, the white laminate vanity, the past-its-prime bathtub and tile… this bathroom needs an update. Enter designer Jason Wong to save the day!

That after photo is totally inspiring, right? As if replacing the vanity and sink weren't improvement enough, adding the window to that area really opens up the space (and adds some very appreciated sunlight where it's needed most – at the mirror). I love how even though Jason chose dark paint colors and tile, the bathroom actually feels larger.

That perceived increase in the size of the bathroom was also achieved when Jason switched out the bathtub/shower combo with a walk-in shower. I've been trying to talk my husband into making the same switch in our bathroom and I may use these photos to support my case. The walk-in shower makes the room feel larger, more open, and, in my opinion, more luxurious.

The after is very nice, but it looks like a lot of other high-end johns. I liked the red and white tile - it was different.
Crazy fabulous.
I'm not a huge fan of baths, so the shower would make more sense for me as well.
Thumbs up for the additional small window.
Love the additional window, but I have to admit: I looked at the "before" pic and thought LOVE that red and white floor!
2 pictures, and one of them is tiny. but it looks pretty alright. The sink for me personally looks heavy and clunky for that space, and seems like there should be more area to put showering products, just having them sitting on the floor is kinda weak.
Love the after! That new window is great. There is nothing more flattering than daylight. I love the look of the walk-in shower, but personally I've never liked the half glass walls. When I use showers like that at hotels, in inevitably get water into the main part of the bathroom, and I miss the enclosed steaminess. Is that just me or do others not love the half shower walls?
The new bathroom is not bad, but the before version was so nice, with the red-white floor! I liked also the white tiles at the wall that look cozy, with the big mirror and the bath tube, which can be used both for a bath or a shower (but the new shower can not be used for taking a bath). The new window give more light over the sink, but this kind of sink is not my favorite, even if it is very popular this days. I find it not practical.
I'm sorry to make a comment not so enthusiastic :-)
I agree with macbride about the half-enclosed shower. I hate getting the rest of the floor wet and can't enjoy my shower as much knowing it's happening. As for the red and black flooring, it was probably cheap linoleum (I had black and white at my last apartment)--cute but necessary to replace. The extra window makes everything so much brighter!
Very sexy! You punched out a new window? Well done! Not liking the loss of the tub, however. And I'm sure a super elegant super spiffy shower caddy would help. I wasn't a fan of the red and white floor. Nice job!
There is a cut out shelf in the shower, so putting things on the floor may be Jason's choice, not necessity.
I only wish my bathroom were as nice as the before!
I liked the red and white too even if it's not black and white, and not a kitchen. And I'm not so sure about no longer having a huuuuuge mirror, but I guess the after is fine. Haven't been in one of those showers, though i've used one of those showerheads before and they are nice....
truth is, the "before" would be a major improvement over my crappy bathroom. but the after is great.
Hey everyone, Jason (the designer) here. This remodel was for my friend (the homeowner), so there were some ideas (like the new window) that were his, made after living in his home for many years. I presented different layouts (including tubs) and talked about practicality. Since he rarely used his tub and we couldn't enlarge the space any more, we went with the walk-in shower. The ledge on the floor, along with proper drainage and floor gradient, usually takes care of excess water hitting the floor. And the shower head is pretty close to the wall and shoots straight down, so that helps too.
Yeah, I liked the red and white tile too, but my friend was ready for a change, and it no longer suited the rest of the house. We used a good green-minded contractor who recycled or properly disposed of the old materials--he rocked.

I personally wouldn't enjoy all that dark color surrounding the mirror. It would make it difficult to get the lighting right for skin care and make-up application. I agree that the sink is too large and would add that I think its shape doesn't go well. However, I do think that the overall effect achieves a cohesive feel that I believe probably reflects exactly what the owner wanted -- and that matters most!
Yeah, I wouldn't enjoy the half-wall shower, either.
So great! I love the after but the before definitely wasn't bad either. I'm saving these pics for one day, I'd like to get rid of my prefab shower and do a walk in tiled. With the rainfall type of shower head (I've got one too) you actually don't end of with water shooting out as much.
The new sink is great and not too big, especially because its got the ledge like rim going on. I"ve got a big vessel sink and am finding, I don't spash onto the counter as much, very easy maintenance.
Great work, Jason! I love the renovation. Especially like the sink. Where is that from? Also, I'm planning on replacing my tub w/a shower as well...any basic tips? Thanks!!!
really liked the before but the after is nice, too.
I liked the quirky red and white tile, too!
LOVE the new dark tile in the shower and the ceramic stool! Wonderful job!
I'm sad. You killed the pretty bathroom.
I like the new remodel..very classy. But I LOVED the before...very vintage in a good way.
I'd like to see where the hidden litter box is - I didn't see an actual picture on your link.
Love the after. Shower needs a glass door on a hinge. However, personally as a girl who loves baths, I would not want to live in a place without a tub. If there's another one in the house, that is fine.
The new window is awesome. It'd be awesomer if the sills were the same height, but I'm assuming there were structural reasons why that wasn't possible. Still, it adds a sense of sophistication and luxury that the room lacked before.
I'm so glad that Jason's original plan to have a tile stripe running across the floor and up a wall got knocked on the head. The revised look is far more luxe.
The "after" is nice (very elegant), but I really liked the "before." It had character that the remodel lacks. I agree with those who loved the red and white floor.
LOVE the new window. I think it adds the perfect amount of light to balance the dark wall. I, too, am not a fan of the sink or the half glass wall because of water getting into the main part of the bathroom, but that's more a personal preference issue. I think the overall look is great!
You can add me to the "liked it better before" team... loved the red and white floor. Yeah, the laminate vanity was dated but why does that mean the floor has to go? *sniff*
I want a red-white bathroom floor now!
I did this in a bathroom remodel, but put sliding glass doors to completely enclose the shower space, which I tiled with oversized matte tiles in a brick pattern. It looks much more spacious, and feels more luxurious than when there was a tub. I would have put a more streamlined basin here, and I prefer the larger, unfussy mirror in the 'before' pic. The new window is great.
I like it. It does look nice and fresh, with the new tile and sink. The one thing I would say is a negative is that switching from a bath/shower to a shower makes this a 3/4 bath, and effectively devalues the home for resale purposes, so that sort of puts all that upgrade money in the toilet.
Gorgeous!
I NEVER would have thought of black walls. Mainly because I have a feeling it could only be pulled off with this much natural light. This is gorgeous. You did a great job.
I love the window but the rest of the "after" um, not for me.
Wow what a transformation!
That extra window makes such a difference next to the sink.
I like the additional window and I have to agree with catspajamas... I love the red and white floor! It would have been nice to somehow design the bathroom to compliment such a unique floor.
Does the shower really need a door? Does anyone commenting know that for sure? We are going to do the same thing with our bathroom and we have been assured by our architect that water will not escape. I love the simple, open look of the shower and it is very fitting for a small bathroom - it opens things up visually and makes it feel bigger.
Though I too would miss that floor, I think the after looks great!
I loved the Before but the After is nice too.
I think the after looks great. It has that spa feel and from the comments from the designer, it fits with what the owner wanted. The new window adds great light to the space and love the tile on the walk-in shower. Great job!
Glad to see I'm not the only person who liked the original red and white tile floor haha (although it would never go with the new makeover)
Still, I do love the after!! Good call on the walk-in shower and the extra window by the sink. I really, really want to trade bathrooms with you!
Excellent transformation. Clean, fresh and bright. Glad to see the red and white tiles go.
Loving the BEFORE! :oP
After getting used to the black wall-against-window look I have to say I like the redo. The red on the floor was eyebleeding, and while I think square sinks are pretty played, the angular theme ends up looking sophisticated (if a little dull). The tub that was removed was small and if the owners were just using as a shower anyway it makes a nice shower space instead of a cramped tub. The look isn't bleeding edge but the space can breathe now. I like it. (Although I suspect that black wall color is not going to last.)
I generally like dark wall colors in small spaces, but I didn't realize that this was actually navy and not black until I saw the pics on Jason's blog. I wonder how it reads in person.
Love the walk-in shower. I would jump at the chance to convert my tub.
I don't think the before was awful, but the style of the after is so different. If this fits well with the rest of the house, then the before must have really been out of place.
If everyone only remodeled for resale value, it would be a very boring and bland world.
What's with all the haters? The before was awful despite the quirky-cute floors, and the after is simply beautiful. Tubs are big gross monstrosities that are annoying to clean, and this is so much better. I love the tile in the shower - such a clean, unfussy and modern look, and carrying it all up to the ceiling makes the room feel bigger. I could do without the huge square toilet, though the 6'3"" homeowner probably appreciates it. This is a great remodel.
With the exception of the tub, I actually like the before better.
If it were me, i would exchange it for a clawfoot.
The before was cute and I am not sure why you wanted to spend money to change it but the after is stunning.
Anyone else do the half glass without the door? We want to put the half glass on our tub for a clean tub / shower combo. Worried about water getting out.
The before is great. The after has no personality whatsoever.
