Jennifer sent in photos of her bedroom makeover. It's a small room that she felt needed a some more stylish touches, so a makeover got underway. Here is the story: I was very tired of having such a boring bedroom with the modern dark wood headboard, white comforter and really ugly bedside tables…
After reading Apartment Therapy on a daily basis, I decided change was in order! My husband and I padded and covered our headboard, bought all new bedding, and even found two great bedside tables at an antique fair. Even though our bedroom is tiny, the change really opened the room up. Now on to the next room…
Thanks Jennifer!

Nomade Express Slee...
So pretty! I love how it brightens up the room and, as you said, makes it seem larger. Nice job!
Looks great but maybe paint the side tables something bright like hot pink. They just look dingy next to everything else.
I think it looks adorable. Nice job.
Love the transformation! Great job! It really livens up the room :)
I think that both "before" and "after" look nice.
Great work! Where are the lamps from?
Where is the duvet from? I love it!
Duvet is nice. I would paint the side tables black or green.
What shade of gray is that?
I think the new decor is nice, but I don't see that it makes the room appear any larger. The bed seems huge for the room, and the bedside tables look squeezed into the corners, just as in the first picture. The lamps and pictures all make it appear even more crowded. I think mounting some smaller pendant lamps on the wall on either side of the bed would be a big help. And hang the pictures on a wall or place them elsewhere in the apartment to clear off the tables. Just my thoughts!
Good job. The bedside tables are adorable.
great work, but maybe something on the walls would help also, and replacing the blinds with shades or curtains...
It's really cute. The before looked nice too, but change is fun.
Did the wall color change or is that just different times of day?
very cute. i would change lamps though
The change is so cute! I actually prefer the original bedside tables, but the new ones work, too. The headboard is wonderful. I hope people understand that tiny bedrooms need not cramp your style. Yes, the bedroom is small, but if it's a room for your bed (and let's not forget the many New Yorkers who sleep in closets) then cozy is sometimes better than larger spaces which become office/library/rec rooms. Also, we in the Bay Area will sacrifice space for charm or views or nabes.
Great job on the headboard! I agree that the nightstands should be painted to make them pop and look more modern. What about turquoise? Turquoise would look great in this space. Of course, then you'd have to post again. :)
Great job! I always enjoy seeing someone else with a small bedroom (though ours isn't quite this small).
Good job and the feng shui balance is good. I would only suggest adding a casually swagged textile over a rod at the top of the window since you obviously prefer not to have a complete window dressing. The swag will "finish" the room and draw your eye back down towards the bed.
Homegirl needs to hang some art.
The before and after both look great , in my opinion!
I agree with other posters that something on the walls would look nice.
I like MsDonnaGirl's suggestion of wall-mounted lighting to make it feel less crowded.
Those are just suggestions for improvement, but as-is it looks great :) Love the nightstands.
Great work - and the idea of a hot color for the bed tables could be a winner.
Great job! I LOVE the duvet - where did you get that?
what is the paint color? looks great.
I can't find it on the website but my SiL just got a very similar duvet cover (possibly the same one) at IKEA. The green on white is very fresh-looking. In general, love the update to the room, though I agree with commenters above that some color on the night stands would make it Even Bettter. I would definitely go with the green, and maybe touches of white.
I like the before and after. Some art on the walls and a change of window dressing/"treatments" would really finish the room nicely (although it's nice, as is. Heck, it's better than my bedroom, so what can I say?)
i think i actually like the before better...sorry
I like what you've done so far. I think the nightstands would be great in bright white to match the duvet - and update the hardware to something more young and fun (since you seem like you're young and fun!). You could go with hanging white paper lanterns from the ceiling on either side of the bed. I just bought one of these paper ones from IKEA (I like to think it's a classic look!) and put a low watt bulb so the light is soft/not too bright: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/70103410
Then, if you want to girl it up, you could hang soft, drape-y white curtains across the wall and window behind the bed, as well as on the other window, to soften the look of the blinds without blocking light - and the tall curtains along with the lights hanging from the ceiling would emphasize the room height. I'd add artwork that continues the nature feel in your duvet -- something that makes you feel calm and relaxed when you look at it. Add a touch of green on the nightstands with fresh flowers, pretty vases... and voila! Most of all, enjoy it and have fun!
I like the suggestions to paint the side tables green too! That would look so fresh.
I love the suggestions of painting the nightstands hot pink and hanging art and some sort of window treatments. It's definitely an improvement on the before shot! Well done.
I'd also love to know the gray paint color...
I think I prefer the modern, masculine room in the before picture.
The choice of bedding is a great one - it's fun and fresh and that's great fabric that you found for your headboard. I agree that the tables might need a punch of colour. If you don't want to commit to changing the entire colour, I would suggest purchasing some stainless steel or chartreuse colored contact paper and apply it to the tops of the tables. Wall mounted lightening would certainly be helpful - but this can be expensive.
Have you thought of hanging your pictures on your walls? They must be very important memories to you as they are in the same place from the before picture.
I think the blond wood goes with the green and gold. and that hot pink would be too bright. To each his or her own.
please share the paint colors!
I second mcqueendom . . Can you share the wall color?
Big improvement. So much more fun now!
I agree with the posters who say that the way you have your pictures displayed seems awkward. It might be really cool to have some of them blown up and frame them on the side wall.
those tables are not blond wood.
I need to know where the duvet/pillows are from!
I'm not going to be a nit-picker, its nice and as long as you are happy... It is a narrow space!
I would replace the bedside tables with butler tray tables to lighten up the space and hang modern lights on each side of the bed to replace the bedside lambs.
..but i forgot to add how much i love the walls, bed sheets and upholstered headboard. Beautiful!
Jennifer, it would be so helpful if you posted the dimensions of the bedroom. I'm about to move into an apartment with a very small bedroom, too. Also, people who say the bed is too big for the room? Two people have to sleep in the bed. Sometimes in NYC, all you get is a room that fits a bed.
butler trays is a good idea, huv123.
I used to have that bed frame and we had to give it up when we moved back to nyc and our bedroom was too small. I love the makeover! I think that the side tables would look awesome in a contrasting color as PP mentioned.
I agree with adding soft drapes behind the bed, painting the side tables white and adding some art in the room. It would make it look fresher and cozier.
Great job! Now when you get around to painting those fab tables I want to see the after after :-)
OK, am I wierd. Why would you have a duvet without a cover on your bed in the first place?
The bedding can be ordered at www.chiasso.com. I think the prices are a little lower if you call the store in Chicago.
Love the headboard makeover! It looks great!
Whatever you do, don't take Pamela L.'s advice. Contact paper on furniture? Noooooo.
The headboard is lovely. I hope you love the bedside tables. They're certainly a statement.
The duvet isn't a cover (at least from what I can see at Chiasso). So sad - this is the second time I've fallen in love with a pattern and been unable to find the duvet cover.
Any recommendation for a yellow/green spring shade with white or grey?
Like it, a lot.
Also would like to see those side tables in a bright contrasting color...Why is there no art on the empty wall? Also I think the reason the room looks so small is the lens used on the camera, and the angle from which the picture was taken.
I forgot to say how much I DO like the changes that were made - great job! Have you thought about installing wall-mounted lamps? Your space is perfect for it.
I think it's a very fresh change! It's hard working with a tight space, but you did a good job! I like the fabric you chose for the headboard; it's jazzy!
To those who want to paint the bedside tables hot pink: you do realise that a man has to sleep in this room too, don't you? I doubt he'd be enamored with having his wife go all Barbie on the decor.
I think the suggestion of painting them green is much better. Especially if some chartreuse can be worked into the detailing.
Also all of the the photos need to go. If you want to be reminded what your friends and family look like, put them on your phone. As it is the pictures bring too much clutter into an already tight space.
I think it's fresh and fun! Great duvet!
eeek! My suggestion to put contact paper on the top of the end tables was made in case she didn't want to commit to painting them and test it out for a bit to see how she feels about it. I like them just the way that they are.
paaainnnttt colllooorr PLLLEEEAAASE? pretty please?
Teal for the bedsides!
. . . or chinese blue or chrome yellow. . .
The bed's only too big for the room if you can't physically fit it in there. I think, in a bedroom (and in most rooms, really), comfort comes first. We just moved into a new apartment with tiiiiiiiny bedrooms. No way I'm going to get a smaller bed just because I only have 18" of space on the side. I'd never sleep. Gotta make it work, and I think she did a great job.
