Laura and Ben moved into their home a couple of years ago, and recently tackled their kitchen renovation before the arrival of their new baby. Originally an old butcher shop, the space had high ceilings and an open plan to work with. Using Google SketchUp to design the layout, they filled in their kitchen with new cabinets, countertops, and appliances, and put down a new floor. Check out the results:
Resources of Note:
• Countertops are soapstone
• Farmhouse sink is from Franke
• Shaker cabinets by Schuler from Lowes
• Floor is Marmoleum in spa from Green Depot
• Stove and hood are from Bluestar
• Light fixtures are from Schoolhouse Electric
• Refrigerator is the Active Smart model from Fisher & Paykel
• Bridge faucet is by Hansgrohe from Amazon
You can see more pictures of the renovation here, and the sketches here, on Laura's blog, WREN handmade.
Thanks, Laura!

White Enamel Four-P...
Whoa! Awesome!
Excellent layout. Looks 100% better than before.
I love everything but the color of the floor. It reads as too blue for my tastes, but that's just personal preference.
The intfrastructure and appliances are great... but why blue floors and countertops?
Kathryn, I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that they like blue. ;)
I like everything except for the floor and coffee machine. It's too much blue. Love the blue stove though, and the ceiling and light. Also love the color grey-green.
Love all the items you picked. What color is the cabinet? really nice.
I wonder if the old wooden floor could have been left alone...i actually prefer that over the new blue one...though it may look better in person.
Gorgeous ceiling! Are you sure this place use to be a butcher shop???
Love the blue marmoleum floor. It anchors the room and is an inviting (and surprisingly warm) choice. In fact, I will soon be replacing my existing wussy-coloured floor with marmoleum "light blue."
As blue is a favorite color, I really like this kitchen because it's different. My only 'oh, no' is the ceiling. I would think it would get dirty from the everyday steam and grease from cooking. Would be curious to have a follow up on this kitchen tour. Oh, and that blue stove just ROCKS!
I think the layout is terrific. I love both the blue floor and the blue stove -- but maybe not both together, as I feel like you'd either want a stronger match or a stronger contrast for best results. But ingenious use of a small space, definitely.
please talk more about the marmoleum...is it DIY click or installed sheet? (love the color!) Thanks!
Love the ceiling, love the cabinets, and love the stove, but I think maybe the floors are over the top. I read that the counters are soapstone, but they look like blue laminate in the photos, which is what is throwing me off. I'm sure it's just the lighting in the photos, so maybe in reality it really gels.
it's a nice kitchen that looks homey and down to earth and functional for the space.
congrats :)
Is the wall angled and that's why the stove is at an angle? It's hard for me to tell... also, can we get your budget for all of this? It looks great, though I agree with the blue..
Very nice! Really like the schoolhouse pendant lighting and the blue stove.
One word...Love it!
The ceiling are not to my taste and it's poorly integrated with the tall cabinets. And why are some of the cabinets white!? The whole thing looks random and partly unfinished.
I just love everything about this. I especially love the double row of cabinets, that amazing hutch, the mix of old and new colors and textures and materials, and -- most of all -- that it looks like you created a space that you love.
Love this kitchen, seems like you really put your personal touch on it with the colors and choice of materials. Nice to see inspiration for those of us that don't want all white kitchens which is all the design magazines seem to have right now.
@WENDYM1 Haha!
I want cabinets that color!
I also like all of the wall cabinets on one side. Makes the other side (work area) feel much lighter.
@ANNA EUROPE, way to positive and thoughtful! Just because this kitchen is not to your taste doesn't mean this makeover is ugly, or as you say, "random and partly unfinished." Really? I see a lot of hard work. Where's a picture of your hard work?
Tough crowd. I like the way the blue floor picks up the color of the blue-gray counters.
I've wanted to do a Marmoleum floor for years. I have this general-purpose room that's crying for a makeover. I'd be interested to hear how you like it, for cleaning, wear, etc.
Definitely an improvement. LOVE the ceiling I agree the soapstone looks blue, and a different shade from the floor which clashes a bit to me, but still looks nice.
The only thing that stood out to me in a negative way was the raised backsplash...don't know why but that's always looked "builder grade" to me and I think that's what's making the counters look more laminate and less solid surface.
I like the randomness of all the different furnishings choices...feels like a real room, like one you pick different pieces of furniture for, not all one thing like most kitchen cabinets are.
I like blue a lot, too, so I didn't even notice the floors were blue in the pics. But I like wood floors best in kitchens - so I probably would have kept them. I'd have put down rug(s) or mat(s) over it in places for color, though. Marmoleum is a great choice, I think, when wood is not an option, though.
I get it that some people don't like wood floors in kitchens, though some (not saying this is true of these folks) just have the idea that wood is not appropriate for kitchen floors, and I just think that's so not true, as I love them in kitchens. In bathrooms, I don't think they'd hold up though...guess I splash more water in bathrooms.
i like the mixed media approach, and adore that integrated dishwasher. do I see a second oven? this looks like a cooks kitchen, designed for the way they live, cook, etc. not something for the aspirational glossies. very nice to see - I'd like more in this genre, with more backstory about evolution of the buildout. May you enjoy many years of good use in the heart of your home.
I love the colors and fixtures you've chosen (especially the floor), it came together really well! We too have that beautiful blue FrancisFrancis! and it makes me smile every morning when I walk into our kitchen.
I love the floor and the fact the kitchen isn't all white. It's nice to see something that's different.
The bonus part of designing your own space is you can make it exactly like you want, to your taste and needs and you can use as much of any fricking color you like.
I think this is a great kitchen because the owners designed it around what they truly love, not just for resale value and the bland "model home" taste of the masses. I love the soapstone counters.
I read somewhere you should never use blue in a kitchen as it is a major deterrent to eating inasmuch as blue is associated with rotting food. I think these will be very thin owners!
What a great kitchen.. Have not seen Marmoleum in a while--really like it in blue
Actually blue used in a kitchen is supposed to deter flies!
Hence the miles of blue and white tiles used in old French and English kitchens.
I like this kitchen a lot. It looks very European, something you'd find in Italy in their quaint and oddly shaped ancient apts. Nice boho vibe!
I second Yeah, I Answer to Red and Carrih and Library Shark... it's refreshing to see a space which is about the owners' interesting preferences, instead of adhering to some impersonal standard. But from some of the negative comments, it's not predictable enough for people who can only relate well to more of the generic catalogue of white subway tile, granite countertops, a bowl with green apples in it and stainless steel everything. Yawn.
I enjoyed looking at the additional images on the owners' website... the ceiling is original and the building is 1890s. The room is irregular and the unfitted look complements the age and character of the building... love it. All of it!
I'm of the "yay for personal taste!" crowd. I think the blue has a lot of character.
I am, however, of the "omg, soapstone?!" opinion... having carved/sculpted soapstone before, I remember how fragile a stone it is... it might be a cheaper option for natural materials, but I would dread the first time I was banging around the kitchen and took a chunk out of my counter-tops. Then again, not everyone's as clumsy as me.
I really like the Marmoleum floor. Not a fan of ceramic tiles that everyone seems to put in kitchen these days.
The soapstone counters are gorgeous, I'm sure the photos don't do them justice. I wonder why more people don't choose soapstone.
Love everything about this kitchen, especially since it is not the usual. Love the ceilings. Wow on some of the negative comments.
Really perfection.
I'm so glad the kitchen was renovated before their baby's arrival. The 'before' would've been hazardous. I like Shaker-style cabinets and the Farmhouse sink for sure. The grey color too.
I'm on the agree with everything's wonderful side,
especially the floor, so refreshing to see a different color down there.
I, too, am a blue lover and a water baby so this feels really at home for me.
I plan to do the same color in my bathroom, using craft paper and multiple layers of sealant.
Seeing the marmoleum version is making me rethink the materials a bit.
What a terrific makeover, guys...it must feel wonderful.
I'd totally want to spend a lot of cooking time there.
How lucky to have such high and lovely ceilings!
LOVE that ceiling!!! Reminds me of the ceilings in old drugstore/lunch counters. Great getting rid of all the mish mash appliances, roll away shelves, etc. Pulled together really nicely, less "first apartment" look and more grown up. Wish I had a big window above my sink! Have to make do with a framed picture of ocean. Love the sink, by the way!
BLUE STOVE!!! i can haz?? <3
