For a few years now, my knitting stash and projects have lived in a heap in my bedroom. In addition to looking ridiculous, it makes it hard to find the things I need. This weekend on a trip to Target, I found a quick solution.
It's just a little closet organizer with a cardboard back — definitely not a unique thrift store find, but better than my current system. After my Target run, I headed across the street to Jo-Ann Fabrics, bought some upholstery fabric for $10, and stapled it to the back for added color. I used old vases to stash embroidery floss and crochet hooks, organized my yarn by color, stuck a few projects on the bottom shelf, and had a great solution in one afternoon. Bigger projects, like blankets, will still have to live in baskets while I work on them, but everything else is prettier to look at and a cinch to find.

Cute solution! I too have a 'stash problem' - only my stash is crammed into canvas bags, god-awful plastic bins, and storage ottomans in various locations in my house. I've thought about enlisting an unused guest bedroom dresser for this task, but was never fully convinced. Now I know it only needs a little something inside the drawers to be up for the task - thanks for the inspiration!
That blanket is GORGEOUS! Did you knit it yourself? Would you be willing to share pattern/stitch you used? I haven't knit in years, but now I might have to start up again..!
Easy, breezy solution nicely done. Really like how you 'wall-papered' the inside. So much more character.
This is smart, and I know what you mean about it not being a super unique find. One way I've spruced these cabinets in the past is by adding custom hardware! It's only a few bucks at a home improvement store and can make a great difference to reflect your personal style.
You could also paint just the door panels or the actual frame with a fun pattern if you want to get really crazy. Either way- it serves the function nicely and that's the key point. Nice Job, Enjoy!
Great job! I agree with Miamichick and would take this just one step further, painting the door panels or using the same interior fabric on the door panels...or just take the doors off and have all that great color exposed! Nice job. :-)
It's cute when it's open, but kind of bland when closed. Can you put some fabric or something on the outside?
A dark wood shelf over the existing top and some new handles might help the outside. The inside is cute.
Not a solution for those of us who are approaching sable, but an easy solution none the less. I would be concerned, however, that it is covering up your register.
It definitely needs SOMETHING.
The throw over the chair is gorgeous!
I love the inside, but I wish the outside was less laminatey. I would have looked for a little wood cabinet on CL...
For a quick and easy solution to a problem, you did great! If it's plainness begins to wear on you, there are infinite ways to customize it, but meanwhile it's unobtrusive and functional.
I think the white looks really clean, although I agree with the solution of changing out the hardware. You could also add a stencil to the side--one of the small cool apartments had stenciling on the side of her bookcase, and it looked really nice.
Yeah, my stash is in my college-era Yaffa blocks - stacked five high... It's embarrassing, but there's just SO MUCH YARN! Congrats for getting it up off the floor - that's a victory in and of itself.
Thanks all! I agree that it's a bit plain and needs some new hardware or brighter art above it. The wood shelf idea is great - thanks Fuzzyegg. It really was just a spur-of-moment decision, so it still needs some tweaking.
I wish I'd knit the throw! It's the Missoni Humbert throw (an awesome Christmas gift from my husband a few years ago). The colorway I have is available here: http://www.allmodern.com/Missoni-Home-Humbert-Throw-1H3PL99-MSH1258.html and the blue colorway is on sale right now at Pillows and Throws: http://pillowsandthrows.com/mis1h3pl9900160.html
Great solution to knitting clutter! I also have the same issue. I would love to see that cupboard dressed up with some chrome or brushed nickel hardware to match the furnishings! :)
What a great storage solution. But there's just one thing. I like it with the doors open:) The fabric back, yarns and projects are so colorful and beautiful to look at.
well done! and what a great gift from your hubby!
Great idea and so satisfying to organize something like a yarn stash. It looks so much tidier in that corner now and I love the fabric on the inside. You might think about changing the hardware, though. It's an easy/cheap way to upgrade a utilitarian piece of furniture.
Lovely after picture!! Did you make the slipcover for the chair yourself or is it a ready-made? If it's the latter, can you share the source? Thank you!
I love the cabinet, and that it's easy to find! I'm moving cross-country for an extended work trip, and this looks like a great way to organize the craft tools I use most and the yarn I intend to use next. I have no delusions of fitting all my stash into that adorable little cabinet.
That cabinet wouldn't hold even my CURRENT projects, let alone my yarn stash!
Cute cupboard, but too bad you can't see the yarn on display! I keep my stash in the plastic see-through Lekman boxes in an Expedia from IKEA. The yarn is sorted by color and you can readily see what's there (in the front of the boxes, at least).
Very nice! If you can paint the doors gray, to match the pillow in the chair, then you would have a marvelous piece there!
Great idea. I used the small Expedit unit with plastic drawers ... black unit with dark blue drawers (my den has dark blue walls and black furniture). its so great to have the current projects (or wips) in one place with my frequently used tools etc.
[my real stash is in the basement in bins... ]
BlakeyBenny: I found the slipcover at http://www.stretchandcover.com/. I hope to reupholster it at some point . . .
Bodhikt and Jennesy: The small size of my stash and the fact it's hidden are both toddler- related. Over the past year, I've found I can really only handle one or two projects at a time (or else a few just end up languishing, forgotten), and I've been trying to only buy the yarn I need since we're really short on storage space with baby clothes, etc. And my son constantly getting in the yarn was one reason for hiding it. It does look prettier showing though!
Where is the rest of the stash?!
There's a "Flash Your Stash Storage" Ravelry thread (sorry, you have to be a member). Not everyone has the same taste in home design, obviously, but there are still some good ideas in there! And lots of bigger stashes, obviously.
I love the papered shelving. Its a perfect way to add some pizzaz to a space in a new way. I did the same thing and get a lot of complements on it. In fact it appears to takes up less space in my studio apartment.
Some funky hardware and a similarly funky treatment on the toekick would do a lot for this piece. It could even turn its laminatiness into a plus rather than a minus. Maybe something that coordinates with the blanket? Even the fabric you used inside the cabinet could work on the toekick, it seems.
