Often times, a safe bet for couch placement is against a wall but unfortunately, having such a large piece of furniture positioned next to a wall can make a room feel weighty and dense. We've always loved the look of a floating piece of furniture and just by positioning the couch in the middle of the room, it instantly feels open and airy. The same goes with an entertainment center. Before, Jessica's TV stand hugged the length of the wall which often makes a small space feel cramped. A simple switch to a vertical TV stand and positioning it on a diagonal makes the room appear larger and frees up an entire wall. We're also loving the cozy nook created by moving the couch--which also makes for extra seating room.

Certainly neater, and the TV is better on an angle - but I liked the table & chairs in the window.
I have been doing the exact same thing for about a week now...and I love how things happen by accident. I was putting a rug under the dining set and I couldn't move it in the right position by myself...so it was caddy-cornered until my hubby got home to help. I looked at it and I thought "this looks great!" so I kept it that way and every time I pass it I smile at it.
I think the "before" actually functions better, but I do absolutely sympathize with the desire to have a change (change! any change! even if it's for the worse!)
Cheers
Great re-do.
I have no frame of reference for the rest of the room but it looks like you made a cozy nook with what you did with the couch.
You also show off the added benefit of furniture rearranging, the room is much better organized and neater
I actually don't think this is much of an improvement, although it is neater and brighter looking. But I think the brightness comes from removing the dark, heavy furniture, and the neatnes from, well, tidying up. It would clearly be uncomfortable to watch television in this room.
To me, it's not so much the rearranging and more about the decluttering. I'd like the TV across from the sofa if the area around it was clear.
Where did the table end up? I like the little chair in the corner of the after picture too.
the rearrangement of the room has not only created a separate, distinct living room area in what appears to be a small home--it has also given the space a new purpose. now, the room has more seating (what with the addition of a window seat), and the placement encourages conversation rather than just television watching. i think it's a lovely room, especially the change of atmosphere.
I like the new arrangement... but it does not work in this space. The "before" works much better.
For starters, the white bookshelf doesn't work in that lovely window area. What a waste of a great architectural detail! The scale is off. The bookshelf is low, and you need something with a bit more height (yet does not block the windows) in that area. The table and chair grouping worked much better.
Also, with the sofa backed up to the entry, the room feels very cut off and inaccessible. Just doesn't work.
The new TV stand is an big improvement.
Rearranging is great if there is some gain or benefit. Otherwise, it is just novelty for the sake of novelty. Never underestimate the power of cleaning up and decluttering for a "new" look!
I think the room is arranged for the better. It's more focused and conversation oriented. The space is now about the nice big bay window instead of the boob tube. I think it's unnecessary to arrange for maximum floor space, which usually comes in the form of making all furniture cling to the walls.
Can someone identify the new two-tone TV stand, please?
Thanks for all of the comments.
The table is on the other side of the couch now (I didn't take photos because it's currently being used as a home office and is messy).
The room is long and the apartment is small so we have no dedicated dining room. This allowed us to separate our dining and living spaces and functions better for us.
The tv stand was a console we got from West Elm. I'm not sure if they carry it anymore.
Nice lamp! Is it a thriftstore find??
I recently put my TV on an angle and it actually totally changes the room.

wow- that really is a huge difference! i just rearranged the furniture in my 'living room'ish area and it feels so much more comfortable and welcoming!
I've been struggling with what to do with my own living room. Thanks for the great ideas! I think I WILL try my sofa on a different angle.
I think you have the right idea about the seating area under the window. I am envisionning a lovely "built-in" window seat that still gives you great storage. But one thing at a time, right?
Great decision about moving the TV too. I've done that in my living room and it almost seems as though the TV doesn't take up as much space as before, just from changing the angle and the furniture it sits on.
Bravo!
Btw, is the red chair in the first picture a La-Z-Boy recliner? I saw one like that a few months ago that was VERY comfy.
I love that tv stand! I think it's the same one Nicole from 'Making It Lovely' has. Wish we could get it in Australia.
Great redo. I agree with the comment about it encouraging conversation, rather than tv watching. I like the sofa facing the window.
