This before and after is a great lesson in using small changes to alter an entire room. By adding color and pattern to a few key pieces, this room gets a dramatic makeover…

Located off the kitchen, this family room is an oft used space for Domestic Daddy and his family. While the before was perfectly lovely and DD was happy with the overall color scheme, he was ready to bring in some new energy. He reupholstered the chairs in orange wool, turning them into a dramatic new feature in the room. He also recovered the sofa in a Trina Turk print that adds new interest and depth to its simple shape.

I love how the TV is displayed! What a clever idea :D
As an artist who doesn't use her easel nearly enough (I prefer drawing from the flat), I adore the use of the easel for the television!
It's amazing what some new upholstery can do!
I love the pop of orange. Such a great reminder how you don't need to change the whole room if you want to do something different..just change a few things and wow! Great job!
By the way...some people love tv and then why not display it in an eyecatching way. Love the easel!
I think the easel for the TV is genius. It makes the location of the television much more flexible (no worries about it blocking a window, having a stand or credenza that's just too big for the space, or even having to mount it to the walls). It's simultaneously hilarious and practical.
Let's stop complaining about where others choose to place their television sets if it works for them.
A non-TV owner
The easel looks like its on wheels, But without having it mounted somewhere what do you do with the chords?
I guess I'm missing something here. I prefer the quietness of the before photo. The colors and patterns in the "after" are too jumbled, to my eye.
Something about using an artist's easel for a tv bother me on a visceral level. It's clever, but I would so prefer a piece of art.
I have to agree! I prefer the before photo as well. Though the dog seems happy in both.
FAB-U-LOUS!! I didn't realize that was the TV. I think it's cool but I too wonder about where the cables/cords are.
The new chosen fabrics for both the wing chairs AND the sofa are kick @$$.
I really like the small side cushion seat too! I didn't even notice the rug until the after shot.
So nicely done...KUDOS..
Cords. Cords. Cords. Cords. Not chords. Unless we're talking about music, in which case, chords.
I love the after. The fabric choices on all the soft seating are FABULOUS. I didn't even notice the rug until the after shot...Kuddos...nicely done.
Oh, love the easel idea but I too wonder where the cords are.
I love orange, nice job. Love the print on the couch too and that very groovy ottoman.
I love seeing things repurposed but not a fan of an easel holding a tv--kinda sad. Also do not like the layered rugs. However, the orange chairs and Trina Turk print couch are fabulous, and love the colorful ottoman. Great job on the after.
What a nice transformation! I didn't like the chairs before at all but I LOVE them in orange. My favorite feature is the pup on the couch though, such a sweet face :-)
diggin' the orange chairs! the couch, however, gives me a stomach ache. cute dog!
Part of the issue is the different angles taken for the Before and After photos. A simple throw on one of the chairs and sofa, one in the same orange as the chairs and the other similar to the Trina Turk fabric used in the sofa's new upholstery, would accomplish much of the same impact without the expense. I'm guessing the Before room had more "pop" than it seems because the photo doesn't show the vividness and extent of the color and pattern in the rug and focuses on the dark expanse of the sofa back. Also, photographed from above, the angle darkens the room. See how much the brighter the After photo looks just from the lower angle and better/brighter lighting?
I can't get past the easel for a tv stand. LOVE IT!
I like the couch. I think the couch + rug + ottoman is a little too much though.
I hope you didn't get rid of the turquoise bolster cushions.
Wow ... such a cheerful, unrestrained update. Fantastic fabric and color choices, and the easel is genius. I love it all, including the sweet pooch! (I'm so glad the TV is not hanging above that beautiful fireplace).
This guys skills are not limited to this room. Just went to his blog and am wondering 'is there anything he can't do'? I suspect we'll be seeing more of Domestic Daddy.
Watch out Martha & Nate!
Love, love, love the easel holding the TV.
I love those chairs in orange. Wasn't a fan of them in beige. The couch is crazy patterned and not my style, but I like it. Honestly had they left it the way it was an did the chairs in orange as well as added an orange throw it probably still would have looked way different and lovely.
So very true, Tracy333, we have a cutout staircase, where the TV would be, now I truly know how we must display it:')
I love everything about the fabrics in this room! However, I think the white walls make it feel unfinished...
The fire place is a beast...Love that!
I would paint the wood chairs black. Nice job.
