Before & After: Marie Clare & Peter's Park Slope Modern

The Sweeten

The 'before' version of Marie Clare and Peter's Park Slope townhouse was not without its charm. Marie Clare and Peter fell in love with the house, but had a few changes in mind to make the space lighter, more open, and the perfect home for their small family.

To find the perfect contractor for their project, Marie Clare and Peter turned to The Sweeten, a NYC-area resource that connects homeowners to architects, designers and contractors. For their renovation, the couple chose NYC Pros, a Bronx-based firm that was able to complete the project in an astonishing three weeks. And wait till you see the results.

After: admit it. You were worried when you saw that bit about 'modernizing,', right? Marie Clare and Peter have struck the perfect balance with a renovation that lightens and modernizes the space, while still remaining true to the home's original character. Gone are the dark trim, the yellow walls, and the Victorian room divider, but it's what they did keep that matters: the original tin ceiling, the crown molding, the fireplace, all speak to the home's past.

The fireplace was re-tiled, and all the trim and walls were painted with Benjamin Moore's Super White, which goes a long way towards lightening this long, narrow space. Color comes in through furnishings, to keep things from getting too dull.

Possibly the most dramatic difference is in the hallway, where bright white paint and a new light fixture make a formerly cave-like space glow.

The bathroom was re-done. We think the new fixtures match the mood of the house perfectly - classic shapes rendered in clean, modern lines.

Here's the whole family - Peter, Marie Clare, and daughter Tessa, enjoying their new living room. This lovely, light new home is the perfect space for an active family.
