When I saw the photo of this ottoman, I had to look twice because it's just like one I picked up at the local thrift store several months ago! Just like the one above, mine isn't in terrible shape, but the upholstery is certainly outdated and could do with a bit of sprucing up.

Jill Browning is certainly more proactive than I am and she did just that, gave her ottoman a fabulous makeover. And where, pray tell, do you think she got that lovely fabric from? Would you ever guess that it's a shower curtain from Target? I wouldn't have guessed, either.
The storage space in the ottoman makes a great hiding spot for Jill's toddler's toys.

Love it, very nice job
Very nice. I just purchased a Marrimeko print shower curtain from Crate and Barrel for a chair reupholstery project I am about to start on. Shower curtains are a great way to get a lot of bang for the buck on fabric. Even better if they are on sale.
Okay, I dare a single person to say they liked the 'before' better. *Puts up fists*
This is the bomb.
Really nice job!
Ha - I actually did like the "before!" Don't get me wrong, I like the "after," too.
I need to keep my eye out for an ottoman like that - it would work perfectly in my small living room! (Anyone know of where to get a similar one that's new, in case my scavenger attempts fail?)
Wow, the after is gorgeous.
There's one on CL right now if you're in the NYC area

I do like the before but the after ROCKS!
NICE!!
Love it - I'm going ottoman hunting today!
I bought shower curtains from Target because I absolutely loved the print, it was a heavier fabric so usable for upholstery, and I used them to recover 2 wing chairs. They've held up beautifully and it's been 3 years (so far) of everyday wear & tear.
Comparable prints, in "designated" upholstery fabric, totaled just over $200.
The shower curtains? Only $28
this may have just inspired me to resume my ottoman re-do thats been sitting around for 3 months. I have a shower curtain by dwell studio for target thats not going to work in my new apartment because it has shower doors that would work :]
That's a fancy thrift store that scatters flower petals hither and yon.
Sharp!
LOL, I totally recognized that shower curtain print. Does anyone know if DwellStudio for Target is being discontinued by the way? It's all on clearance online and they sold the remaining stock in my nearby store.
I like both but the after is really nice. Good to know that shower curtains can be used to upholster furniture. I have 2 chairs that I need to re-upholster, so I am now on the hunt for some fab shower curtains.
I have a similar ottoman (no inside compartment) at home waiting to be reupholstered. It has been waiting for six months. I even have fabric for it. Oye.
I like both ways! Thank you for keeping the legs ;-D
This has to be one of the best before afters! And with a target shower curtain....ah, love it!! :D
I have that EXACT ottoman...purchased for $1.00 at a garage sale. It has been sitting in my garage for 6 years! I love it and will re-furbish it, as soon as I find a place to use it!
ooh la la! nice
oh! i was just thinking about replacing a barrel hassock with something exactly like that. love.
Love it! And note, folks, the little white feeties!
I have those shower curtains! I like mine, but I would rather have that ottoman.
The after is nicely done, but too showy for my taste. It's hard to imagine a room where all the major furniture is so muted that it can step aside and let a tiny piece like this grab all the attention. There are plenty of places where I could work the "before" into my life.
Let's think for a second about what makes the "before" upholstery so "outdated" that it apparently can't be suffered. Is it the piping? Piping is too timeless to be "out." Is it the lack of pattern? I can't believe that we won't be seeing solid colors anymore. Is it the bland color? Look at any model home in the U.S. -- this is the zenith of neutrals and greige.
I know which way I would bet if someone showed people the before and after pics and asked "Which of these looks is vulnerable to becoming quickly dated, and which will last forever?"
I think the main flaw in the before is that the "clothes don't fit." The corners seem frumpy because (like someone trying to wear a dress she outgrew three years ago), the filling has shifted while the casing remained the same. So it's the lack of maintenance that's the problem. There's a difference between something that's "worn" and something that's "outdated."
I think I would have added batting to the top, covered it with a velvet type material, tuft it, and skirted the bottom.
Buying or making a fitted stool cover is an option also.
Its a great make over. Though it gives me green eyes - here in Aus the only shower curtains i have ever seen are all plastic - no cloth or even double layered plastic/fabric. Its annoying that we just dont seem to get some things here!
that effin rocks!!
I have an ottoman identical this one. Perhaps I have an idea as to why the owner decided to reupholster. The one I have is made of a vinyl (?) cover, and after spending some time in storage, the vinyl has started to "crack" and split along the seams.
I love this bench, as I inherited it from my grandmother. She used it as a sewing bench and it contains plenty of sewing supplies stored within. I want to put it in my house, but I have hesitated due to the cracked cover. I agree with perhaps using a slightly less graphic print, but I do think the final result above is quite lovely. It's not much bigger than a throw pillow you might find on a sofa or arm chair. Isn't that where we use pops of color and large, graphic prints to spice up a room? The difference, I suppose, is that a throw pillow can easily be switched out to adapt to changing style, but this upholstery job looks quite involved.
Anyway, I would LOVE to see a tutorial on how the owner accomplished this project because if I had an idea how to do it, it would move to the top of my DIY list!
