Jolene kept some old nail boxes in her garage for some time, waiting for a way to repurpose them into something useful. Can you guess what she made for her kids? Click to see what she and her husband did with one crate in an hour's time, with a few tools and additional supplies. I'll give you a hint: it involves eyebolts.

Jolene cut some holes for legs and her husband secured the rope before hanging it from a tree in their front yard. The result: sheer delight on their kids' faces.
Thanks for sharing your project, Jolene! And for showing us the entire process over at Duck Egg Blue.

White Enamel Flatwa...
Very cute! I hope they reinforced the fasteners on the bottom of the box, so someone's little tush doesn't fall through accidentally.
Joy!
Super cute! I hope those soft, squishy little boy legs don't get scratches or splinters.
I'm just here to try to stem the potential flow of comments about child safety here. PLEASE, NO COMMENTS ABOUT SAFETY HERE! Jolene and her husband made this for their kids, so I'm sure it'll be safe enough. And by safe enough, I mean A FEW SPLINTERS AREN'T E.R.-WORTHY! Geesh.
That being said, I love, love, love this swingin' idea. Congrats.
Lorelski, I appreciate your point that "kids these days" don't need to live inside safety bubbles and, you're right, a splinter won't kill anyone. That said, I don't think "safe enough" is high enough standard. A box that is meant to hold nails, and not a human, is unlikely to have the structural integrity to keep someone safe, especially when it appears to use bent-back nails as a key piece of the construction. And, lastly, why not save yourself and your child the trauma of scraps and splinters and not just line the openings with some rubber or something.
I say this coming as someone who grew up with -- and who currently has -- a tire swing in the back yard. I'm not at all opposed to DIY kids projects; I just think this one could use a little refining.
That is a very cute idea. I'm always amazed at the potential people see in plain objects.
if anyone took 2 seconds to actually read her blog post about the process, you will see that she took several steps to make sure this was safe for her children. she didn't just cut some holes out and tie a rope to it and stick it on the tree willy-nilly. why does everyone on the internet think they are the parent police?
I'm baffled that anyone would take the time to comment if they hadn't taken the time to assuage their own fears by double-checking the provided link to the full blog post project. The blogger covered all of your fears and more in her post.
I was expecting the project to be a toy box or something. I never would have guessed a swing!
agree I tought it was a toy box with eyes or something.
Clever idea!
Lots of safety over the swing, none when using power tools a foot away from your face.
Safety glasses, dude.
So they took an old wood box and made a swing. Sorry if I'm not blown away with the creativity of this.
Very cute!
Oh, and PS, if it can hold nails, it can hold a small child. I guarantee the nails weighed well over 40lbs judging by the size of it.
So disappointed not to see a 50s style crate scooter like this.
Great project!
The unfeeling, disrespectful and ignorant comments whenever creativity is displayed often make me want to log off AT forever. Get over yourselves, people. Life's too short.
The kid has no shoes on, so who know what toxic fertilizer or weed killer was used on the grass. And, there's no head or back restraint, nor warning to keep hands inside crate at all times. If he's trying to swing all by himself; what, no parental supervision?! Get child services on this!
Clever, I probably would have left out the leg divider (increasing the danger level to the power of ???) but the kid looks happy (and will outgrow this all too soon). Then, rope off, flip it over and turn it into a monster truck garage.
Clever and cute! When he outgrows it Id slap a roof on it and use it as a bird feeder.
Wow. I'm becoming increasingly annoyed by the comments on AT. Perhaps it is time to add a thumbs up/thumbs down option so that people can voice their approval or dissent with individual comments. If people realize how unpopular their negativity is, perhaps they will reign it in a bit more before sharing...
@beanne66: better to check the facts before you criticise. Anyone familiar with a nail boxes knows they are strong enough to hold a child this size. As far as splinters go, these boxes are so vintage as to be smooth as silk.
Thank you, duckeggblue, for an inspiring project. My own Onehunga Nails box is becoming a swing just as soon as I can get out the Ozito. Keep the No. 8 fencing wire projects coming and please don't be discouraged by the AmericanSafetyPolice. Perhaps you could design a gun safe out of another nailbox. *That* might mean a safer child ;)
Very cute idea, I love vintage wooden crates.
Awesome!!
Good Grief! The "Pebbles As Tripping Hazards" (PATHers- my copyrighted label) people are in FULL SWING (pun intended)!!! WARNING: The sky may fall on this kid's head while using this swing! Why doesn't he have a helmet on? Shoes? A safety belt? Why isn't he hermetically sealed in a glass case to prevent him from breathing air?... C'mon people! REALLY? SPLINTERS????? What, were you born a Crotchety Old Person? (COP- my other copyrighted label for goobers so scared of their own shadow that they want everyone else to be scared of shadows too so they won't feel so alone in their goober-ness). The kid is actually OUTSIDE- not parked in front of the giant flat screen TV playing a mindless video game! Give it a rest. BTW- I think the swing is adorable! I weigh 105 lbs & I still spin around on the tire swing my hubby rigged up. So, if a rope & a tire tied to a tree branch can hold ME....
OMG I LOVE this!! He's adorable BTW.
