The 80 degree weather we're having here in Chicago (in March?!) is making me feel a little Alice-in-Wonderland, like suddenly, oddly neat things are possible, like say, Mandi from Vintage Revivals turning old, mismatched thrift store lamps into something utterly modern and so very cool. Only there's no weirdness in Mandi's delightful creations; the weather, on the other hand...

We featured Mandi's bedroom not too long ago for her wonderful chandelier fashioned out of a hanging planter. Yet the yellow bedside table lamps caught my eye this time around. I love the playful and modern look of them. They're bold and fun but not too busy. Oh, if only life could always be like these lamps.

Nomade Express Slee...
Are those shades a joke?
DEE-lightful.
^ Like
I love the yellow color on the base of the lamp! Very cheerful and inspiring. :)
LOVE!
The shades take the most private and intimate area of the home, and turn it into something institutional, impersonal and jokey, If that's what she was going for, then well done! I guess the defense is "they're IRONIC" -- as if irony is one of the preferred descriptors for a bedroom.
Those shades totally ruin the rest of the room.
Shoot. I meant to say "Like" to @michellem9's comment. I think these shades are ghastly.
i adore this makeover!!!
I like the paint job but agree with the others on the shade. Somehow they just make me sad. They really don't work with the room at all.
Though not my style...too cute those shades!
foolish shades - yes! I llike the silliness of the icons, but think they might have worked better in a gray tone to match the walls.
now back to my own foolishness...
Nice job! And I think the shades are cute, not really getting why some people are so passionately turned off by them.
Maybe I'm just possessive (MY side, lol!!!) but I'm digging the shades. Love the side tables as well, and the carpet on carpet action with the rug.
Love it! I think the shades and the light fixture bring the whole room together. Keeps it from being too overly feminine.
We all need shades to say "We are Hetereosexual!" Wouldn't want to forget.
I love the shades! Also, the bases are slightly different, as are mens and women's anatomy, so I think it's doubly cute!
I like the yellow bases but alas I can's say the same about the shades.
Liking the yellow, the shades not so much. For not thing, they seem way too dark. Plus, I would't want shades that look as if they were made out of restroom signs. But then again, it's my own feeling; while I love humor and irony, it's more its placement in the bedroom that I'm not a fan of. I love bedrooms to be calm, elegant and obviously devoted to intimacy and sleep.
Those shades are hilarious and you should be proud of them!
You've also inspired me to look past the ugly finish usually found on that style of lamp. They are everywhere in thrift and consignment stores for very little money and who knew they could look so great!
I love them- shades and all! I like the bold graphic and the humor. RXBYN, I'm pretty sure that most visitors to Mandi's bedroom already know that she is heterosexual, so I don't think she's making some kind of political statement.
Hiss hiss hiss.... how horrible to be silly! Mirth in the bedroom would be a moment of life lost. We must take ourselves seriously at all times.
I never get the vitriol on this site. If that's their sense of humor, why not?
I LOVE the shades. It adds a bit of hetero-whimsy without resorting to 'his' and 'hers' monogrammed pillowcases.
AND please give us more thrift-store finds!
This is a unique take - just not my style.
Again tough crowd. Why does anyone share anything anymore?
(yes, three any's!)
I think they are cute!
I like the yellow lamps and the rest of the room, but yeah. Those shades...
A nice fabric shade in the right pattern would add a far more sophisticated punch. Judging by the good job Mandi has done decorating the room up to that point, she is more than up to the task. Back to the drawing board!
I think the shades are kind of cute but totally clash with the style of the rest of the room. This isn't a college apartment.
Love the idea of painting random lamps the same color to make a matching but not identical set, though!
I think the shades would actually work better in a gay men's bedroom, sort of like his and his embroidered towels in the bathroom. I like to find humor in decor anyway. It sure beats so many rooms that are void of the owner's personality. I doubt it was the intent of the owner, but in this very charged political climate the do send the message "this bedroom is defined for one man and one woman." Likely if you know the owner well enough to be in the bedroom then you would know if there was any political intent. Kudos to the owner for not being afraid to take a chance and have some fun.
I love those shades!! I don't like it when my husband rests on my side of the bed, or takes my pillows... so this would be a reminder for him to stay on his side haha
@ dmstudio...what?
My guess is the intent is just to say "his and her" sides of the bed. Plain and simple, no politics.
I like the unexpected personal element of the whole room. Playful yet relaxing.
Just in case you forget which side of the bed you sleep on, I guess.
I like the yellow... :oD
Oy...love the bases and the room overall, but I REALLY don't like the shades. If the desire was to do male/female sides of the bed, they could have use a very subtle pattern of these images or the make/female symbols in an abstract way that would have looked a lot better here.
LOVE 'EM!
Not my style either but that doesn't mean I don't appreciate them.
Methinks maybe we all need to *get over ourselves* & just have
a lil fun and enjoy life :)
HAH. How dare you insult gay marriage by defining your bed as heterosexual. Wait...
I agree that they seem a little out of place in this bedroom, but I like that it's humorous. And I love the chandelier.
I'm among the (seemingly) minority who enjoys the new shades :). I think they're playful enough but not overbearing.
Kudos for not letting the current trends dictate what must be in your bedroom. In my opinion there isn't a one size fits all to design. Your home should make you happy, whatever style that is for you. If you've got a playful style, why not show it? I love the shades - a fun play on the his and her sides of the bed!
Oy vey. I can't believe people are so fixated on the shades. It's cute, interesting and nothing that you can find in a store. Isn't THAT what AT commenters usually dig? I can't keep up, people.
Personally, I love this re-do. It's done well, looks like it will hold up and has a sense of humor. Not sure what's not to love about that. I'm pretty sure it doesn't have a political hetero agenda and I'm pretty sure it's cute. So there!
I love the play of the graphic, funny shades against the rest of the bedroom. Unexpected, funky and fun. Nice job!
I didn't notice the shade because I was too focused on that chain on the hanging lamp. It's either really outdated or retro. Not sure which.
My goodness people, down, down! The shades are fine! In fact, they are really cute. Also, something so bold and different as that was probably very carefully chosen, which means it represents a piece of their personality. And I'm very sure they mean his and her, NOT a bash on gay marriage, geeeeezzzzzzzzzz.....I would hate to let you peer into my home and dissect my little personal touches throughout the place.
Cute!
La Launa é coretto.
I just think it's hilarious that they used bathroom symbols on the shades and then painted the lamps yellow. Makes it look like you're supposed to pee in the nightstand or something.
I really like the concept of decorating the shades with a bold graphic. I've seen the male/female icons on pillowcases and duvets, not my choice but I get it. Lamp shades are a very low risk way to experiment/have fun with decorating.
I also like the concept of taking a thrift store find and making it your own, giving it a new life, but I see a lot of stuff being painted a bright color and I feel like I'll see posts on AT in 5 years where people are bathing objects in paint remover to go back to the original materials. That said, these lamps seem to work in this room.
Could try pairing those bases as is (polished) and the new shades with a bold graphic, combining something with a little patina with a modern, pop element. Not as matching but maybe more interesting.
Love the yellow. I like the quirkiness of the lampshades but it doesn't quite work visually for me. Maybe if the icons were smaller and used as a border on the shade...
She did a nice job. I just wouldn't want anything in my bedroom that reminded me of a public restroom.
You folks can be pretty intense and ridiculous sometimes. The shades are an excellent idea. EXCELLENT IDEA! and while yes they are bathroom symbols, I don't look at the room and think its a toilet.
Great concept, dubious choice of colour. For that room I would have gone with a chartreuse.
The shades are fine... just not for this room. The room is lovely, but not the 70s Pop look you'd need to make the shades work directly, nor the full on baroque grandeur you'd need to have them work ironically.
I'm on Team Shades. I like irreverent touches like that in a room.
Wengi, I don't 'look at the bedroom and think it's a toilet', either. What some of us are saying is that we don't like being *reminded* of public toilets.
The only person being intense and ridiculous is you. You may think it's EXCELLENT, but some of us don't.
I think they're very clever but for me they don't go with the rest of the space, which is homey and soft, not so bold and graphic. That's what's bothering me about them. I think they would look great in a more mod, black and white room. Cute idea!
the shades need a ribbon of black around the top and bottom, the male/female icons are just floating around in space right now, they look lost i want to help them!
the shades are hilarious. nice job on the lamps. they obviously are very inspriring!
I like the shades... white on gray might look nice, but you wouldn't get as much light out of it, I think.
(Randomly, the ikea gislev comes in red now, WHAT IS THIS INSANITY.)
I love the shades! Such a creative idea! :)
Those shades... no no no... NO.
Are you kidding me?? Those shades and lamps are sweeeeeet! Love them! Points for thinking outside of the box. YES!
The comments on this site have been way too snarky lately. They are shades, people. Relax!
And p.s. I think the shades are great!
"put a bird on it!" (for those of you in Portlandia!)
For someone who is super serious has no ability to joke, relax or find humor in something simple and unimportant – These shade are so not for you. But they are clever regardless of your inability to have a harmless chuckle. Gastly? Seriously are you 700 years old, an old English School Marm or mad at someone? I don’t get it.
Some of us need to get a grip and get over ourselves. You’re totally off your rocker (don’t worry – said rocker does not have a lady…or a man on it).
I think the stuff on her site is super unique and fun. She found junk in a thrift store and made it work together – and look ridiculously cool. Does it look like it popped off the Pottery Barn Catalog. Nope. But I think that’s kind of the point. I think the whole room rocks. Great Job Mandi – love your site and your ability to not me a lemming.
Weird
Wow! Harsh critics out there! I love the shades! They bring some unexpected quirk-factor to the room. Original & creative--5 stars from me! :)

Honestly I do not understand why AT readers need to knit-pick about one aspect of a project so much. So what if the shades are more playful than you would like in your bedroom, the point is that this poster took something old and made it functional again. By acting this way you are discouraging others from posting their projects, defeating the purpose of AT. Be nice and learn from your mistakes.
LOL, the shades are fun! It sure brought the AT snobs out...not that it takes much.
lol wow people wow. not your style shade ok... but seriously?? sheesh.. you people are way over the top it's a lamp shade, not in your bedroom you never have to see them again soooo why are your panties in such a bunch?
I think it's cute, I put a beautiful vintage scroll work peacock on my lampshade for my bedroom and I love it. maybe I should post it?
good job mandi super cute and great save, I see these lamps all the time I just have NO ROOM for any of them, I wish I did I'd love to remake them... so many thrift store finds and so little room.
I will reluctantly admit that I am not a fan of the shades. I do, however, love the yellow lamp bases. Great redo!
On another note, did anyone else notice there doesn't seem to be any usable pillows on the bed? I've been allowing myself to get very annoyed by unrealistically staged photos. Or, maybe, I'm just a mean old pillow snob that won't let me boyfriend put his head on our shams, euro-shams or throw pillows. Am I strange?
So awesome, great idea
Only in Utah.
