Newlyweds Amy & Jason recently consolidated their spaces by moving in together in Jason's home. Over the past three years Amy has made a lot of changes. This kitchen is a great example of how a little paint on the cabinets are a big part of the complete transformation.

The white & grey cabinets make a huge difference in this room. They really liven and brighten up the kitchen. Amy & Jason were able to keep the same light fixtures and countertops. The new table really makes an impact too. Great job Amy!

Shaw's Original Fir...
Nice, I like how the insides of the two cupboards match the other one on the side.
i love it. brightens up the entire space. Changing the dining table was a good choice too!
Painted cabinets do go a long way....as do new lighting fixtures, new flooring, new furniture, installing backspash, painting the walls...
I think both the before and the after are nice.
I like - tho the new counters, tile backsplash and wood floors make a big difference as well.
^ not to mention the redecorated eating area and repainted walls. I would have replaced the floor with something much lighter.
It looks so much cleaner! Those IKEA cabinets looked out of place before, but with the yellow added in the backs of the other cabinets, it fits so much better.
Agree with amt230. They did way more more than apply "a little paint." They now have wood floors, a tile backsplash, new hardware, new lighting, and white dining table.
I'm really starting to think the mantra in many of these design blogs isn't 'put a bird on it' - it's 'slap some paint on it'
I agree with Miami's Elaine - both the before and the after are nice.
The white cupboards do look nice, but I miss COLOR. Wish they could have done something with the left wall, trim or backsplash to tie in a little bit more of either the yellow or gray. The all-white is just a little too much for my taste.
Really nice job. Much brighter and cleaner, though I have to agree with other readers that the cabinetry is just one of the major changes -- the flooring and backsplash make an even bigger difference, in my opinion.
stunning transformation!
Veyr nice, I love the colors and where they are. I would never be able to design something like that and pull it off. Good for you!
I love the after, but as others have noted, this isn't really an example of painted cabinets going a long way. There is new furniture, tile, flooring, range, microwave and faucet. It's nearly a complete makeover.
Wow..i love it! So much better! great job!
can you tell us about the soda bottle looking dish washing liquid dispenser?
did you make them? looks so unique!
The after is SO much brighter! Love it! And I like that the lower cabinets are darker - yet they don't affect the overall 'lighter' feel. The backsplash tile is also a really nice upgrade that makes SUCH a huge difference!
The paint looks nice, but the new floor is a huge improvement too.
tearin' up that linoleum was the real savior
Uhh, I agree with a previous poster. Painting the cabinets was a great idea, but this is pretty much a kitchen redo. New fixtures, backsplash, lighting, appliances, sink.....yeah. Kitchen renovations do go a long way.
Yeah, it's now something along the lines of, if you're doing an entire kitchen reno and don't feel like replacing the cabinets, just paint them. anyone who has watched a weekend of HGTV programming knows this.
though I do like how the bottom cabinets are painted different color than the top.
The combination of all the changes is a big improvement.
I also like that they put glass in the cabinets that flank the microwave. I think it visually lightens that end of the kitchen a lot!
I may be misreading, but I got out of it that the cabinets were just part of the overall redo, and a large part at that. I didn't get the impression that the post was trying to say it's the biggest or only change made.
And I agree - without painting those cabinets, that kitchen (with all other improvements) would look nowhere near as different or, imo, as good.
The post does say that painted cabinets are a big part of the whole transformation--not implying that it was the only thing done. I love it. Is it just me or does it seem like AT followers are often looking for something negative to say? Just a thought...
Houseonclintonavenue: I just looked on "more info" and I can see that the soap dispensers are made with the type of liqueur pourer dispensers that bars and restaurants use.
I think the after looks great, especially the glass cabinets, the backsplash and the floors! Beautiful
My only complaint (sorry) is that I miss the color on the walls. It's too, too white.
Wow! What a difference! Thanks for the inspiration.
Lovely... I like the variety of colors, the white grey & birch.
Also the round table is much better than the rectangular.
Ok, I agree that they did change the floor, painted the walls and added a backsplash... but the light fixtures are the same, I don't know what you're talking about.
Either way, it's a great transformation!
White Kitchens Rule!
It's the painted cabinets AND the new wood flooring that make all the difference.
I like that the appliances remained the same, instead of going the now ubiquitous stainless steel route....
Excellent choice of colors, great job.
"I like that the appliances remained the same, instead of going the now ubiquitous stainless steel route...."
Except that the range, microwave and fridge are actually new too...
...but at least they're white - and that's definitely something to appreciate.
Looks great - and love that you were able to keep the light fixtures, cabinets and general layout!
LOVE IT! Can you share your source for the wood flooring?
MWesdock,
Sometimes I feel like folks are too negative, sometimes I think they're just confused; I've been a complainer a time or two myself.
My big thing (like this) is when the title of the post doesn't seem to match the actual work done. You come in expecting one thing, and get another.
That shouldn't diminish your pleasure in the work done, but sometimes...it does.
Beautiful kitchen, and I love the new white table...but I also liked the old table. :)
i totally painted my rental kitchen cabinets the exact same scheme and i couldn't be happier. makes a crap kitchen much fresher. high five!
Thanks for all the sweet compliments!
HouseOnClintonAve- grab your fave soda bottles and stick a wine pourer in! Easy.
Reegs- the floors are reclaimed former tobacco barns. We love what a piece of North Carolina history that makes them (not to mention the fact that they hide the occasional scratch from our 95lb pup)! The company who did them was Heritage Plank Flooring out of Snow Hill, NC.
Yay for white appliances. The delivery people couldn't believe we picked white but I just like the brightness- and I love that the manufacturers are getting away from the dimpled texture finally.
If you think it's too too white- I wish you could see out our bay window into our backyard. The perception when you stand in the space is a little different from looking at the pics. I have to apologize to my hub for not including a shot of our in-wall beer taps! It's ever-so-nice to have a handy husband for these projects! And I want to mention he was very involved in the decision-making and deserves a lot of credit as well :)
Ok sorry for the novel.
I love it!
But does it look better? Unless you're trying to fake the neighbors into thinking you have 20's era builtins. Might want to get a vintage gas stove to go with the theme.
Bleh. Not. Impressed.
Wow, that is VERY nicely done. I love the way that the white on the upper cabinets blends them into the wall, taking away the top-heaviness that plagued the old kitchen.
And also the use of small, light, horizontal tiles in the backsplash that make the gap between the counters and the upper cabinets look so much bigger!
It was by no means bad before, but the "after" is great. I agree with a previous poster that the floor is a real star here, absolutely beautiful. I like the dark gray on the lower cabinets, and the gray-white-yellow combination is really nice. I always appreciate seeing renos where people keep cabinets that are not in bad shape or dysfunctional.
I think painting the cabinets definetely made a ton of difference. For example, in the before picture the microwave looked so ugly and now you hardly notice the microwave. And the new floor is stunning.
Lovely! The before, although nice, was a little too "country kitchen" for my taste but the after looks nice and crisp while not going overboard on the industrial. Well done :)
Here's a great post (with before and afters) that show how beneficial cabinet painting is ... even without major appliance and floor redo's. Plus, it includes a step by step and great tips for how to actually get that job done! http://www.younghouselove.com/2008/11/how-to-paint-your-kitchen-cabinets/
Wow! A great transformation. The yellow cupboard on the left of the picture is a really nice burst of colour.

@studio_jones: In-wall beer taps? Now I love this kitchen even more!
I really appreciate the before and after shot from the same angle and with similar lighting (I know the lighting was updated too, but sometimes the before picture is so dramatic you can't tell what design elements were really worth it!) Nicely done!
The comments regarding, "oh no... more white cabinets". Well, I respectfully disagree, there is a variety of different paint colors in this reno, the grey and also keeping the original yellow birch color on the floating cab on the left. This was a different approach rather than just painting all the cabs white.
And the post tagline? It's accurate. Painting the cabinets did go a long way. Yeah, it wasn't the only change but it was a major one. If they had done the other changes but not painted, it wouldn't have been as great a result.
I love AT and love to hear feedback from its members, I've learned so much from many of you but I feel sometimes there is so much nitpicking and negativity expressed in the most ungracious way. I may sometimes put a comment that I would have done something different, not really my style or think another change would really add to. But I would never say "bleh" or "meh" about someone's home.
I just did this to my hideous 70's era kitchen cabinets last weekend. The transformation is nothing short of miraculous. We went from embarassing eyesore to Martha Fabulous after two days' work. My husband will find me standing in the kitchen, just staring at the new paint, mouth agape. Hope it lasts long, without too much chipping...
Huge improvement for sure! My 2 cents is I would have a different dinette set in there. Since it's white that might be adding to the too much white comments I keep reading. I love the yellow cabinet!
Wow what a difference! Would you recommend painting oak trim to add color to a bedroom? If the trim were painted, I would have more options for color.

I really love what you've done with your kitchen... it resembles what we have mocked up for our kitchen redo. The change in light is wonderful!
I also like the before & after looks.
Wow, that IS a cool transformation. But the floors make a big difference as well. I recently did a remodel of my kitchen and used Cabinets Plus in Orange County, CA.
They did a great job and matched my existing decor. More expensive than paint, but c'mon...it's the hub of my entertaining area.
