Charlotte found this simple dresser on Craigslist for $75 and gave it the royal treatment. Click to see how she transformed it, after the jump!

As you can see, the dresser is now bright and vibrant, and gives the room a pleasant punch of pattern. Her sons share the drawers, and the top doubles as a changing table for her baby daughter. Charlotte, appropriately, calls it the "Everything But the Kitchen Sink" dresser.
Nice work, Charlotte! Here's hoping your kids love it as much as we do. Folks, you can see more of Charlotte's work on her blog, Ciburbanity.

White Enamel Flatwa...
I like the before, but that's me.
The after is cute and happy and really suits the kid's room. Nicely done!
The original is boring and dated. I really like the change! LOVE the herringbone pattern!
I also perferred the before version however I applaud the work you put into this.
Love the change! The before was boring, dated and ugly. It looks great now!
Well, I'm going against the grain (get it?) and saying that I love it for a kids' room. It's vibrant and stimulating, just what you want for a child.
I think it's so funny when people think a $75 chest of drawers being painted is a life-altering TRAGEDY.
I wish I had the time/patience/skills to pull something like this off. I really like it.
Also, @surfjac, regarding tragedies. Agreed.
aw, c'mon: context is everything. In my own (adult) bedroom, 'before' would be the more charming, but in a kids' room, 'after' is fabulous!
I don't think the "before" was bad at all, maybe just a little boring. I think the "after" is great. It's fun and original, and perfect for a little one's room! I love how each drawer is a different color.
LOVE!!!
LOVE!!!
Love both versions.
Fantastic transformation! So envious of anyone with the skill and patience to do this.
I think just painting the handles on the before would have done wonders
If it were me, I would have probably kept the original look. Maybe refinsihed witha different stain but kept with a natural wood look. Just my personal preference. the after is cute and well done, though. Still, I think it'd be better if they'd stuck to two colors. Or if they'd kept the light blue strictly as the outer color. I find the order of the drawers and their color combos as they are busy look in a bady way. There's no sense behind it. Maybe if the white and gray drawer were swapped with the light and dark blue drawer?
Beautiful embroidered alphabet hanging.
Agree with K Thro. Something off with the patterns and colors being used in that order.
Also agree with Garimi -- just treating the handles would've been fun enough but kept the original look. Maybe painting the colors in a fun, pop primary color like red or green or orangey yellow.
I hate to be one of those people, but.... oh no no no, the before was beautiful! The after is way too busy. I would love to find a dresser like that in its before state. Nice CL find though - those drawer pulls are distinctive.
I think the before was not boring at all and agree with brooklynbeetle - beautiful dresser and great find off of CL.
However, for a kid's room? The after is perfect.
I love the before. I do agree with someone earlier who said just doing the handles would have make a nice change.
The before was ugly. The after is a labor of love.
@KThro... that was exactly my intent! Lesson learned to check more than the outside dimensions as it turns out the drawers have specific spots in the bureau. Best laid plans... And I love the idea of just the drawer pulls... it's hard for me to hold back (especially when for the kids space), but that would have been a great compromise. Next time.
I would have done something much different, but I think she did a great job and it looks real nice in the baby's room.
The original didn't look like an heirloom piece and the result is fun and custom for a kid's room. I think it is really charming and my kids would LOVE a dresser painted JUST LIKE THIS!
Well done!
It's adorable and think anyone who takes the time to write you two paragraphs about how they would have done it better needs to get a life.
Oh, god, the before was fantastic and interesting and a great design.
It looks great and suits her purpose, and it can always be refinished later, though I confess I liked the before as well.
Really cute. I love redesigning old furniture. My home is furnished with creative furniture redesigns. It is an inexpensive way to make your home personal and unique!
I like the concept, and I agree that something is off, but it may just be the angle that the picture was taken. Nice work! Will it hold up to kid abuse? The two boys in my home have beat up their dressers over the years.
The color combos don't "make sense" to my eyes, but the painstaking lines are so very nicely done!
I think it would look better to move from lighter on top to darker on the bottom. And have more obvious relation between the colors.
I personally prefer the before but I applaud anyone who uses their creativity & hard work to make a piece they love for their own home. =)
Totally agree with you, urbansouthuna.
So do I.
Yochi
I love the before, but good job re-imagining this piece for your space.
I think that awful yellow-y stain just blinds people to options other than painting. (Though not in this case, this woman had a plan and executed amazingly.) The before is ugly ugly ugly. And that can make people think "cover it up!" before thinking a nice ash or walnut stain would solve all their problems.
But, again, that obviously wasn't this woman's problem. She made a well planned choice and did a great job. And anyway, what's so bad about painting wood? It comes back off with the right tools, just like a bad stain job. And if we're going to start telling stories about that time we bought a piece of furniture that we had to strip the paint off of and sob sob it was so hard....Well, honestly, if you don't like stripping furniture don't get painted furniture to redo. It's literally that simple.
It so cute! Fantastic idea - you did a great job!
What a fun piece for a kids' room!
TRAGEDY!
I clicked through just to laugh at the hand wringing from the anti-painting-any-wood-furniture-evah brigade. But I love the after - so cute for a kid's room. I'd like to see the whole room :-)
Beautifully done! Perfect for a bright kid's room.
The "before" is a really nice dresser, but the after is awesome! Clearly she saw potential and customized it to her vision for a great-looking kids' room. Oh and I would love to live in a world where painting a dresser is a tragedy, just sayin'.
The "before" is ok. I like the herringbone, but the amount of colors makes it way too busy.
Best laid plans....haha. We've all been there at some point despite meticulous planning. There was a time I would have allowed an oversight like this to steal the joy from a project but no more. In an effort to overcome a bit of OCD-ness, I now refer to these oversights as The Unexpected - as opposed to 'mistake'. It's a mental game to be sure, kind of a challenge to myself, but it's made a world of difference. And every now & then, I'm pleasantly surprised to discover my oversight resulted in an improvement on my original design.Sweet.
I can't look at the herringbone or chevron patterns for long (they literally make me queasy) but I gotta say, this is fun & quirky and fits PERFECTLY in your kids' room. Well done! I just hope you don't allow the drawer business (or the comments here) to steal your joy. Besides, the time will come - all too soon! - for a new paint job as the kids grow. Really, they grow too fast! TFS.
Very cute, esp. 4 kids. Being non-procretive, not looking 4 kidstuff. Seems like should have been saved for chest in worse shape. Original condition great for me.
I always thought that that type of furniture was supposed to be plain.
Same here.
too bad. i would have gladly bought it from her to keep it in its orginal stain
