Sometimes there is just not enough space - or money! With an upcoming wedding and two blending households of avid readers into a one bedroom condo (plus one curious object collector - me), we've got books and baubles coming out of our ears. This office area is one of my least favorite places in our home due its lack of light and wall space restrictions, so it was time for a cheap and quick fixer-upper!

One thing we have been working on in order to create more storage space in our overflowing home is the installation of floating shelves. If you've got a blank wall, you've got space! It's easy to forget that a full piece of storage or shelving furniture is not always necessary. We bought these inexpensive Fabian shelves from IKEA for $6.99 each, and started stacking. These particular ones give you a variety of options for hanging, which is great when you're looking for a wall stud!
We added a couple of coats of our living room paint (Martha Stewart's Oat Cake) to the background wall to warm up the area and voilà!

As much as typewriters are cool antiques, looking nicely on side somewhere - I will keep my MacBook Pro... where it belongs: in front of me.
i'm assuming the typewriter can be placed on one of the shelves on the left, if you just move over the antlers =P
i think it's a great way to highlight that it doesn't take much time, effort or money to make an impact on a space.
i do, however, miss the art piece that was on the wall before. bring it back!
Love the artwork in the before photo. Who's the artist? Thanks
yea...um no. Super cute though, and I love the shelves. But the typewriter looks ridiculous in place of the mac!
I wish that AT would start posting peoples houses/rooms that are real, functional rooms! We want to see how other people live, fashionably. Obviously no one sits down and uses the typewriter.
Looks are not everything. Function and style and coolness etc. Give us something real..I promise we will like it!
I agree with aprildeann: what happened to the original artwork? I liked it!
It's amazing what a difference the shelves make. They fit the wall space perfectly, and are dimensional. I thought for sure the desk would be painted, or some other big change. This is great.
This office nook seems unnecessary, as the shelves simply hold knick knacks and a couple of books. I prefer the before pic.
I'm tired of cute typewriters strategically placed in a home. Do they seriously use a typewriter for their every day home office work? Come on!
cute, but the shelves aren't really being used for storage, more like display
tough crowd today.
my friend has a typewriter and a laptop on her desk...she's been known to respond to IMs on the wrong keyboard.
It says in the post that she collects lots of things, including books, so I see this as a practical way of displaying her items, while allowing her to have a work space. I think it's a fantastic job, personally, and adds a lot of character.
it was a little barren before - i echo the appreciation for the artwork though, i'd like to see more of that. a globe, vintage typewriter, anthro and pantone mugs, antlers, and the same glass hat model head that we saw in natalie's house tour earlier this week. i think i spy a copy of design sponge at home on the shelf too. so basically this is your typical AT trendster. there is an iPad on the desk, maybe they prop it on top of the typewriter. or its one of these: http://www.usbtypewriter.com/
Ugh. Can there be an after the after photo? So much potential here.
Oh, I preferred the before! It was clutter free and looked like it was meant for working. I like the red chair.
Nicely done and with just a few changes too. The shelves help anchor the space so the desk looks like it belongs.
I agree with FALLINGUP, so many of the house tours look like museums, not a home. While I feel warm, secure and cozy in my eclectic home and friends say they feel the same. I don’t think I will be a candidate for a house tour anytime soon. :O/
AT, can we have some post dedicated to a discussion of what defines cozy, or, can people consider banning it altogether as a word that has no intrinsic meaning?
I have to agree that this doesn't rate as a makeover. I do think "re-styling" could make a great new AT category, restyling can transform a room and solve problems and deserves consideration as its own thing.
I wish I had this much space for stylish vignettes. Sigh.
Adore that typewriter.
Makeover? Office for two? Maybe not. But it's cute!
Oh, I preferred the before! It was clutter free and looked like it was meant for working. I like the red chair.

Those aren't floating shelves.
Very nice, but, um, where's the "makeover?" Oh wait, now I see it. A couple of shelves have been installed.
Oy. So it's a small makeover, a mini-makeover. Still a makeover.
Tough crowd? Yes, if you mean people who didn't learn manners from their parents.
I love that typewriter!
I wonder how strong those shelves are, considering they're mounted upside down from the way IKEA would have you do it. They look cool that way, though.
Hate to be one of "those" people, but I too prefer the before shot. I can totally picture getting work done there and appreciate the simplicity.
I have a hard time looking at the after picture...it makes me dizzy, as the left side of the desk is off. Not sure if its a case of Photoshop gone bad or what but the perspective is all wrong and the shadows and profile are just wrong. Am curious as to what is actually holding the desk up on the left...
I like the open, airy feeling of the before. Nothing that was added really makes the office work better as an office. I'd have to push a lot of that stuff on the desk to the side in order to get work done. Good start though!
nice !=)
What exactly was accomplished here? I thought there would be seating/space for 2; instead, there is a less practical space for one.
You guys seemed to miss my very functional iPad RIGHT NEXT to the typewriter. sheesh.
Mary Jane 70, LOL, I hadn't noticed that before! You are right, something is definitely "off" in the after picture. Through the Looking Glass....
Andie, the OP, owns the coolest little gallery/shop (assembleshop.com) in my neighborhood in Seattle, and I must say that her style -- both personal and home -- is consistently adorable. I don't think she was trying to sell this as a major makeover, just a reminder that a few inexpensive shelves can really fill out a space! Also, Andie, you better watch out because I want to steal that typewriter.
Would also like to see more 'real' photos. The styling is fine for retail merchandising but too much 'cute' is numbing. This quote can apply, "Just because you can, doesn't mean you should."
How about a post comparing 'real' photos with the stylist's photos and let AT readers vote on what is most inspiring.
I'm trying not to be labeled as a "nasty" poster (these aren't personal insults guys) but I would agree: looks like Photoshop gone awry on the lefthand side of the desk? Perhaps neccessary because of the alternate angle on the left side of the desk and what appears to be at least a partial wall in the before: was it blocking the view and therefore removed via Photoshop? I like it, but agree, "restyled" (which is a GREAT proposal for a new "channel" on AT), is a much more appropriate term for this post. And perhaps original posters don't get to choose headlines?
I must say that I liked the before better...
@catdoc and others: the left side of the desk is attached to a pillar, so there is a gap between the wall and desk. hence, the gap you. no photoshop here.
