The kitchen island has a hinged top, which when open instantly adds extra space for prepping. And since it is on casters, you can turn it around to create a bar top for eating - just pull up a stool or two. We also like the diagonally-cut tiled back splash which brings a bit of liveliness to the room. You can see more of Anastasia's work at her website.

OK, there should be a prize, bc you would totally win it.
So now I'm back after reading...Anastasia of the amazing bathroom yesterday...ask me if I'm surprised.
Sweet merciful crap. Talk about transformation, in a GREAT way, not the unfortunate they-spent-a-lot-of-money-and-have-lousy-taste way, of which there is all too much of these days. You get a gold star AND a blue ribbon :)
That's a small kitchen? I'd love to have a kitchen that size!
Nice kitchen, tho i fear that this too will appear quite dated in a few short years - particularly the choice of glass backsplash tile...
...but if there's one good thing about stainless steel refrigerators, it's that magnets don't stick to them.
although i prefer white cabinets and a larger island myself... this is absolutely gorgeous!
Nice transformation, but this is NOT a small kitchen.
lovely, though i'm not a fan of the backsplash. and i only wish my kitchen had room for an island!
Lovely. Plus, your island provides great inspiration for my kitchen remodel (which so far is only happening in my head), I've rarely seen something that small that looks that nice and finished.
I don't like the replaced island that much - liked the before one.
Lovely kitchen, but I agree it's not small.
For the most part it's fantastic, but the backsplash is going to look dated very, very soon. I guess on the upside it's not absurdly expensive to replace a backsplash?
Agree that the kitchen is not small. Disagree about the backsplash. It's an appealing pattern in neutral colors that work with the cabinets and the style of the house. I think the appliances will look dated long before the tile.
Visited Anastasia's site, thank you for sharing your talent. Clearly, you are gifted in the area of design and it is inspiring me to be more creative and take chances with color. Love all the ideas, thanks.
I agree with sally about the backsplash.
as for the island chrisgal, the new one keeps the storage hidden which is probably the best feature.
and yes, this definitely doesn't fit in a small kitchen category. I've had some of the world's tiniest kitchens and I think this is even larger than the largest kitchen I've had.
true, not small but quite lovely. i do not like the backsplash much - i think it is too loud - and personally i am not very fond of metal surfaces like the steel fridge doors, i think they make the place look too cold (aside from showing every fingerprint …) - but in all a beautiful make-over.
The pendulum swings back to dark kitchen cabinets. Dark cabinets work fine in a large space.
Pretty brilliant. Though that's anything but a small kitchen!
Lovely, but for the backsplash. Sorry.
sofistiphunk -- The older one has much more character and doesn't look so store bought. Obviously the poster has what really is a large kitchen, so the extra storage isn't that important.
It is a lovely change but agree that it will be dated quickly. The only thing I don't like is that the island is white rather than dark like the rest of the kitchen. That makes it stand out to me as something that doesn't belong.
I think turning on the lights was an excellent first step.
I think sometimes it’s hard to gage the size of a space when there’s no one in the image to give it perspective. But I do believe that it’s a small kitchen beautifully renovated.
Lovely! Great job updating the room.
hi,
just want to clarify that the kitchen is 9.5 x 12.5' - considered small by many.

I just want to quickly respond to comments based on the backsplash "dating" quickly. The design and backsplash was chosen for the client's and their unique taste. It really does reflect them & suit their love for bold and colorful design, and it fits in with the overall design scheme.
So to many of you out there it might "date" quickly, my client's love the backsplash and that's what is most important to me as their designer!
Thanks for all your comments,
Anastasia
Not only is it a great design, but the pictures who off the transformation. I liked the original island better. This one doesn't seem to go with the sophistication of the new design. However, you can't beat the options the new one gives, something that is in the AT DNA.
This is a very well thought out design. I can see that Anastasia integrated her design philosophies with the needs and wants of her clients. I don't think the back splash is too dated. I think it adds a little bling to the space, yet keeping the colors conservative. In regards to the island, yes I loved the original too (looks like a John Boos), but from the pictures, I bet it was a little too big for the space. The new island is much more to scale and more versatile. I like the drawers, the added cabinet spaces, the wheels and the option to lift the drop-down leaf for more space or leaving it down for traffic flow purposes. Typically, you'd want 4'-6" (no less than 4'-0") space all around the island. So, this is a great solution. Great job, Anastasia!

I just happened to see this post when I looked for pictures of small kitchens. Despite the fact that this is a fantastic looking kitchen (love the cabinets and the island), it is not small! I wish I had space for an island and still have that much space to walk around. My kitchen is like a small square box with 2 entrances! I would really like to take off 1 wall facing the dining room to let more light in and open up the whole area. But I don't have that money to do that :( .
Hello, the renovation project looks really great, but this seams to be not a small kitchen at all. Would like to know some alternatives for really small kitchen, where there is small space and not many cabinets. Changing the counter top, flooring and choosing the bright coloring for the kitchen can transform it completely.
