Many of us have often stared at the pages of magazines, wishing we could have a designer look on a dime. Those that actually make that dream come true are usually willing to roll up their sleeves and do things themselves. When it comes to this bedroom that couldn't be more true — the new look includes an amazing handmade ruffled duvet cover, headboard and more!
Over at Kiki Creates, there's been some action in the bedroom (hubba hubba!), and some beautiful work has been happening. For the super low price of $70 there were 4 major projects that happened in this space.
For starters let's talk about that duvet cover! It's reminiscent of the ruffled ones found at Anthropologie, Urban Outfitters and West Elm — without the high price tags. This one was made from sheets found at the thrift store and was hand sewn and — truth be told — I think it looks better than the inspiration pieces! Leftover ruffles were made into a matching bed skirt.
Next up was the headboard which was made from shutters found for $5 that were topped off with a little crown molding to complete that headboard feel.
Above the bed there's a handmade wreath and a few pieces of artwork that take this room from blah to BAM (but not the Emeril kind of bam, that's just a spice mix).
There's lots of tips and tricks on making this look yourself over at Kiki Creates and we highly suggest heading over for a little inspiration, even if ruffles aren't your thing!

Well done. Love the duvet cover.
So pretty!
I love the before picture! So simple and elegant. I would have just put a picture up over the bed and called it a day.
Love the effort.
I've been drooling over those Urban Outfitters Ruffle curtains for months but seriously can't bring myself to shell out the 70 bucks per panel! Maybe it's time I get to sewing some! Well done!
Definitely not a fan of ruffles or wreaths, but that headboard was clever.
Love!
I also love the duvet cover! If you are looking for duvets that are less expensive than Ubran or Anthropologie go to echelonhome
WOW! Great job! I love the changes, and am definitely inspired. :)
Wow, love the duvet cover. I'm been trying to go for this look for a long time, but i'm having a hard time finding things I like.
I'm most impressed with the headboard. Headboards are ridiculously expensive, so it's always a good idea to reappropriate if you can.
NICE!! my cat would a field day with the douvet cover!
I'm not a ruffles person, but I love this room! What inspiration!
This is fantastic. Looks much more expensive.
Bed Bath & Beyond has ruched DKNY duvets, $129 for full, $159 for larger sizes.
Not my taste at all, but nicely done for the kind of thing it is. (Although I do think the bright primary colors are in conflict with the girly-girl ruffles.)
Very nice!
I love the bed and headboard, but the yellow and blue accessories are rather childish.
Love the headboard — But can you lean up against it?
Very pretty and I always loved blue and yellow together. Very French!
Amazing. These are the kind of makeovers that make me happiest.
Well done, but it's not like the average non-sewing, non-sewing machine-obtainable person can do this for $70... they'd probably just be better off getting the Anthro. Unless they specifically want something just a bit different, in which case I want to know what the hourly wage a seamstress/whatever would charge for the job....
lepidoptery - There aren't many folks who don't know someone who does have a sewing machine (and how to use it)! So maybe it will be $70 pluf the cost of bribing your friends!
This is gorgeous! I, too, have been eyeballing ruffled duvets at Urban Outfitters for some time.
Refreshingly pretty and relaxing.
That could be so... honestly, I should take my sewing machine and sign up for classes somewhere. Technically I knew how to do buttonholes, at one point. I am no longer there. >.>;;
that is fantastic!
The headboard is very stylish. The rest of it... is not.
This is what happens when a desire to craft triumphs over good design. In fact if you look up the definition of the word "twee" in the dictionary, I'm pretty sure you'll just find this picture.
OK< this makeover took my breath away!! I have been wanting these duvets FOR EVER, you did an AMAZing job!! So jelous!!
You did such a good job! I bet if you painted those end tables and put on some cute hardware it would be even more fab!
@blandwagon
I think twee is a big part of the anthropologie mission statement, whether they admit it or not.
(Nothing wrong with that... I don't like this look myself, but can appreciate the ruffles from the groping perspective....)
A few of the posts here could seriously be summed up as "I hate fun"
I have been trying to figure out how to do my own all-white ruffled duvet cover - my new day bed is going to be perma-rumpled since it's such a pain to make. This post could not be better timed! (Oh, and I, too, love the contrast between the clean brightness and the girly ruffles. Kudos!)
I love it. I am not schooled on how to use a sewing machine, and these are the projects that always make me kick myself. AND I HAVE MY MOTHER'S MACHINE (she's long since forgotten how to use it).
So boring before and SO fantastic after!!! Really impressed with the bed spread. It totally looks like anthro.
Marvelous.
I like the personalized pillows, and that they're not HUGE, and the colors are a noisy happiness.
I like the ruffles on the duvet, and that it's DIY. WOW!
The headboard is so right on, I can hardly believe those are the same lamps and tables. It all works together so well.
Haters gonna hate.
I love this.
Love the duvet!!! (not so much the dust ruffle)
The headboard is very, very cool. Awesome job :)
Cute! Where is the artwork from?
I love the duvet, and even if I didn't your dedication to put in the TIME to create a room you love is commendable.
so beautiful!! i love it.
It's twee, yes. But I do appreciate the handwork involved in the duvet cover and bedskirt - it looks lovely in the pictures. I like the contrast with the dark wood headboard and the new wall paint color.
More suited to a young single woman or teen girls bedroom, though. This is not a look that will appeal to men (and a lot of women who prefer a more sophisticated vibe), so if you are sharing the bed with your husband, this probably won't work.
I don't care for the wall hangings over the bed - too jarring and cluttered (a single item, preferably with strong graphic interest, would be better), nor the strong hues on the accent pillows (with such a frilly bedcover, the eye needs a rest with softer colors and fewer ruffled and petalled flower pillows). I would also suggest painting the bedside tables a tan hue several shades darker than the walls, or a much softer blue color (cream and honey oak aren't working for this look at all). I think the windows need some full-length sheer panels to finish the look.
So sweet! I love it. I think its nice to have a place to post a before and after to proudly show off your efforts and hard work. Its too bad people feel they need to critique and give their unsolicited two cents. boo to them!
Wow..so many fun comments! Let me answer a few questions...the artwork can be found here:

the duvet tutorial can be found here:

AND luckily I have been through college at a design school where everything you do is constructively criticized...but as an artist and as a person, I like to surround myself with those things that make me happiest. So even though the room doesn't appeal to all, it certainly makes me happy when I enter it (even my husband)..and it was a heck of a lot of fun to plan and make..in 3 days.:) Thanks for the comments.:)
I actually am curious about the wall color BEFORE the change. Im looking for something similar. Do you recall the paint brand and color name?
Thanks
I usually don't care for ruffles, kikicreates, but I love this, love the colors, and love that it's unique. Great job!
And folks, if you want to learn to sew, call your local Joann's fabrics, parks and recreation department, or community education center--they all have basic sewing classes and can get you started. The instructions for the duvet cover assume a fair bit of sewing knowledge, though, so I wouldn't take it on until you get some experience with the basic stuff.
THAT...is SOME $70. DEF eyecatching change for just 70 bucks =p=)
^yes! really love. but where are the pillows from?? i esp love those!
rayray099..i made the pillow covers to cover just regular old pillow forms. I'll have a tutorial up on my blog..www.kikicreates.blogspot.com on how to make a few of them next week!
amazing job on the duvet ! truly inspiring.
also lol @ kamikazetedibear, so true ! :D
