We've all seen these tufted ottomans in the world of retail right? They're a good idea in thought, but they're really too small to hold more than a blanket or a few kids toys when it comes to living room storage. Instead, try this super simple trick to make them extra functional!
Zan over at MeLikeStuff was thinking outside the box (or in this case, cube) when it came to this red storage ottoman. Although they're not quite large enough for living room storage, they're perfect for the bedroom!
After removing the feet, she flipped the unit on its side and placed the feet underneath (without reattaching in case she wants to use it as an ottoman again). Now the unit has a door and works great to hold all the basic bedroom necessities that you want close at hand but not always on display. We love the look of the tufted fronts as they could provide a serious pop of color in a space without any extra commitment.
Check out the full process over at MeLikeStuff and keep an eye out for storage cubes at a local retailer near you to give a flip to!

October fools day?
Awesome! Multipurpose is always better!
The pictures in this post make it look like a joke. - there's only an after shot of it "open" and no mention of the table top.
After clicking through (and finding that she put a table top on it, and it actually looks OK)
*edit
After clicking through (and finding that she put a table top on it, and it actually looks OK) then it makes a bit more sense

i wish there was a 'dislike' button.
I think this looks like what it is... an ottoman on its side.
How does it stay on its unattached feet?
(other than that, if the After picture showed the door closed, I think more would like it.
...close parens. :)
It needs a shelf inside...
...but then again, I'd never use something that didn't have at least one drawer as a nightstand: Who wants to roll halfway out of bed & crawl on the floor to get at the nighttime necessities?
wow... that's one fugly and impractical piece o' craptastic furniture! Brava!
I have seen this girl's blog before and most of her stuff is pretty cute. But this is just plain awful. She should screw the legs back on and send it back to Overstock.com ASAP!
The point and joy of repurposing junk is to uncover a piece's beauty, reveal its potential, or rediscover its relevance, not to accentuate its inherent "junkiness" by plonking it on its side so we can see life's detritus spilling out. This project lacks dignity and the result is actually rather vulgar.
Also, speaking of bad design, what font is that in the pics? It's not helping.
You guys are funny. I so laughed. Lol
I love the AT comenters. You put a lazy smile on my face on a day that is not starting out so well. thnx
???
Y'all realize the door still CLOSES, right?
And, can you perhaps see past the SPECIFICS to get to the core of the IDEA? Sheez. Sorry, Sarah Rae.
I guess I don't see that an ottoman on it's side is any more useful, convenient or attractive than in the position it was designed for. And the unfinished bottom-become-back would need to be hidden agianst a wall or other furniture, so it's actually LESS versatile. But if it works for her, that's all that matters, I suppose.
Wow AT commenters, some of you guys are brutal... but hilarious! I laughed so hard at some of the things said here... too funny. With regard to the before n after - eh... I mean, it works for her and that's great, I just don't know that this "project" needed to be photographed, documented, and then.... posted? Really?
Editorial? Anybody reading this stuff?

You can use the top now, and the inside, without having to take the stuff off the time. And most nightstands aren't finished on the back.
ahh the font, that is what bothered me most, too @spots! Definitely a standard pre-loaded PC font for sure.
I like the "idea" behind the post, finding new uses for stuff you already have is nice. But yes, the red tufted leather is just horrendous.
