This month on Apartment Therapy we're diving into to the subject of things that help make our living spaces feel like home - the art, crafts and collections that we display, work on and gather. I've been holding on to this fantastic before and after for this month - it's a clever modern take on a familiar image that combines a great look with a touch of a cheeky conceptual take on art, framing and DIY.

Found for $25 at a thrift store, this classic image has appeared in many homes in different sizes over the years, but never quite like this. After his modern makeover done with acrylic paints, I have to say George has never looked better!

Ha ha! Very witty, and it looks great.
Love it (although my Political Science degree might think otherwise)! Very clever idea. I'd like to see it done with bright colors too!
Awesome. I want one!
That is about as freakin' amazing as it gets.
META AMAZING.
It's perfect!
Too cute!
I wasn't expecting this. It's cool!
Very creative! Nice mixture of {very} old and new.
Nice! May have to try this with some thrifted art as well.
Very clever and all of the white pottery just makes it pop even more!
oh
this is wonderful
Very clever! It's the little things.... :)
Awesome!
Love that! Very creative.
liked this.... the first time it was posted!
Excellent.
clever :)
Very tongue-in-cheek...nice!
FAN-tastic! Great laugh (when I finally got it), thanks so much!
SO clever love it
what am i missing... all i see changed is a black frame?
Smart and attractive, like George himself.
Kind of awesome! Subtle, yet right on point.
LOVE it.
Look again, Clickchick. The bottom part of George in both pictures is sort of cloudy white, but the makeover sports a two-tone frame to match - white on the bottom, stippled to meet the variation in the picture itself. Neat. And certainly clever and original.
Witty, but I actually care more about the white vases, particularly the ones on the right. Where are they from?
Ooo that's fabulous.
Love it! A question though, were the vases also spray painted a uniform white in the after photo? They look different.
Smart! esp with the ceramics.
Like
edmarch, the four vases on the right are all German made porcelain. There are some Ikea vases mixed in.
petro, no the vases were not painted.
Thumbs up on both the frame and the rearrangement of vases.
Very cool!
George has never looked cooler.
And while we're at it, how about a shout-out for the original artist, Gilbert Stuart?
wow!
I think that's totally rad.
How fun! Very clever :-)
Yep. So cool.
Awesome idea, would never have thought of it myself.
Awesome--I LOVE this!
What a great way to incorporate the art and frame into a beautiful seamless piece. This will be in the back of my mind when I go thrifting for wall art.
Extremely clever update. Bravo!
