- My room makeover::
- When we bought our house, the walls and ceiling of the basement were a horrible yellow color. The walls had odd places where they jutted out, and there were lots of bolt holes left over from the old owners. It was not a functional room, and it ended up as the catch-all for anything we didn't have a place for. We purchased a nice new sectional and a large TV, but that was about it. We spent a lot of time thinking about how we wanted the space to function and look, and we knew we wanted better wall colors, more storage, a bar area, and brighter lighting. I created a Pinterest board to capture inspiration rooms, lighting, colors, and decor items. I think the cost ended up being around $5,000. We tried to do as much as we could ourselves, and it took about 2 months. The cabinets/counter/storage cabinet/coffee table are from IKEA, the rug is from West Elm, the sofa is from Macy's, and many of the other furniture and decor items were things we already had.
- My makeover advice::
- Start with your budget and a wish list of what you would like to accomplish. Create either a Pinterest board or something physical (corkboard or poster, or a binder or file) where you can keep ideas and inspirations. Keep an open mind about your sources because some of the less expensive stores have really great things, and if you save on basics you can splurge on a great accessory that will really make the room.
- What I love most about my new space::
- It turned out even better than I imagined, and it is so nice to have a functional and beautiful room. We love spending time there now, watching a movie or sports game or playing with our son. Rather than being a giant storage area, it's now one of our favorite places in the house. We had a party to celebrate once we were done, and many of our friends commented that they hadn't even known we had a basement.
