- My room makeover::
- My roomie and I moved into this two bedroom, two bath apartment.
She occupied the master bedroom and anytime I would go in her room, I would always imagine making it over as a den. I was never one that liked having the TV in the living room and I also like to entertain so having an extra room for guest was something I longed for.
Well after two years my roommate moved. My rent doubled and she took her furniture. So I had to purchase all new(new to me) furniture for the living area and for the soon to be den, all while pinching pennies. Suffice it to say, Craigslist and Thrift Stores became my best friends.
Painting was out. And of course I could not rip up the carpet to reveal beautiful hardwood floors. There was no great architectural detail to the master bedroom, so I had to depend on furniture and accessories alone to make it into a warm and inviting den.
I love vintage, mcm, texture and color, which is reflected in my choice of furnishing and accessories.
- My makeover advice::
- As I have heard and read so many times, it is better to take your time decorating, especially if you are a thrifter.
It's better to wait for the right piece then get something you don't really want. Then when you find the right piece you have to try and sell it or get rid of it.
Thankfully I found it was always easy to sale my unwanted items on CraigsList and usually for a profit. But I still think patience is the way to go.
It is also good to find a couple of resale/thrift stores that you really like and then get to know the owners. I developed relationships with all the owners to the point that some of them would allow me to take an item, with just my word to pay when I could.
Others would save things for me once they knew my style.
Yeah becoming friends with shop owners is really good advice.
- What I love most about my new space::
- I think what I love most is it gives me a totally different feel then the rest of my apartment.
My apartment, for the most part, is decorated with my girls in mind. Vibrant colors with a feeling of Boho. And while I love all of my decorating choices. Having this second bedroom decorated in these subtle warm tones totally transforms my mood anytime I enter.
